问答题The initial fund of general scientific knowledge is an invaluable asset (财产), but the young research worker should have no illusion(错觉) about how little it is compared with what he or she should acquire during succeeding years. As to the precise value of this initial fund of knowledge, this depends to a great degree on how it has been acquired and on who has been imparting(传授) it. 46)Young scientists cannot realize too soon that existing scientific knowledge is not nearly so complete, certain and unalterable as many textbooks seem to imply. The original papers of great scientists describing their discoveries and explaining their theories are never as rigid and self-confident as the resumes(摘要说明)of these discoveries and theories in textbooks by other men often suggest. Young scientists consulting these original works will find in them "it appears that", "it probably means", "it seems likely that", more than once, as expressions of elements of doubt which great men felt and honestly put on record. 47)Many statements which have appeared in textbooks as universal and absolute truths have, in their original form, been put for word as only approximately true, or true only in certain circumstances. Immediately upon starting on the first serious piece of research, a young scientist must therefore do two things. 48)The first of these should be a careful reading of original papers or books relating to the problem, written by investigators whose technique and judgement he can trust. While reading these publications in a most attentive and receptive manner, the young scientist must not fall into the error of placing in them a greater confidence than their author would wish him to do. 49)No great scientist ever wants his pupils to be mere gramophone records, faithfully reproducing his remarks, never questioning anything, never wanting to add to or subtract from what he has given them. The second thing a young scientist must do, almost but not quite simultaneously with the first, is to proceed with observations and experiments. 50)The initial observations and experiments will be failures, but they will help the development of appropriate experimental technique, and they will give a greater understanding of the literature the young scientist is studying.

In these times when market forces appear increasingly
complicated and more volatile, it is all the more important to understand the
professional jargon and terminology in the market place in order to be able to
better make our investment and business decisions. Understanding key economic
indicators will assist in the decision making process, providing a snapshot of
the current situation and an insight into the future. (46)
{{U}}Each economic indicator tells us something about the economy or inflation.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is probably the most important report as it is the
whole framework where other economic indicators fall under.{{/U}}
There are also indicators that are broader tell us about the economy
itself rather than the components, e. g. employment figures, leading
indicators, money supply figures (M3). Inflation figures, Produce Price Index
(PPI) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will, in short, inform us of the
changes in wholesale prices, cost of consumer (retail) goods and services
respectively. An indicator that is useful must be accurate,
timely and reliable. It depends entirely on the integrity of the national
statistical system responsible. It is vital to know the accurate components of
an indicator. We have to be mindful of the limitation of these statistical
figures too. Some indicators can be historic or extremely
volatile, and therefore their values are reduced. It is better to compare the
most recent data with earlier months, or take a moving average for the past 3, 6
or 12 months to smooth the data. It will tell us if there has been a significant
change in trend and whether a new direction is under way.
Timeliness of an indicator is also significant. (47) {{U}}Although the
reported figures are important, it is crucial to recognize that markets react
more to the variance to the consensus forecast than to the absolute change in
the indicator.{{/U}} (48) {{U}}Markets do not like surprises and can be frustrated
with volatility upon subsequent revisions to the numbers published, even though
significance of the absolute number diminishes with each passing
month.{{/U}} The Index of Leading Economic Indicators (L. E. I)
in the US acts as an early warning system, telling us when the economy is about
to change direction. (49) {{U}}This composite index of 11 leading indicators has a
good record of providing accurate forecasts. The total index performs better as
a prediction tool than any of its parts.{{/U}} This monthly figure is available on
the last business day of the month and has low volatility. (50)
{{U}}As a general rule, turning points in the economy are signaled by three
consecutive months of L. E. I changes in the same direction. This leading
indicator is like a lighthouse, giving the rest of the world economies a glimpse
of the direction of the world's largest economy.{{/U}}

问答题Directions: Translate the following text from English into Chinese. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET2. By the year 2100, global temperatures are expected to rise by between 0.8 and 3.5 degree Celsius. That may not seem like much, but such an increase in temperature would cause a rise in sea levels large enough to put the lives of up to 100 million people at risk. For the first time in the scientific community, there is total agreement that the activity of humans is at least partly responsible for the problem—specifically the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which is released by the burning of wood, coal and petroleum products. Reducing harmful emission is just one area in which the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel is decidedly optimistic. In the short term it might not prove that difficult. Efficiency improvements alone could cut energy needs by as much as 30 percent at virtually no extra cost and, in developed countries, emission reductions of up to 60 percent "are technically feasible". In the longer term, harmful emissions will be reduced as the world changes over to cheaper, less environmentally damaging energy sources.

问答题As an important means for preserving knowledge, various literatures have become precious resources for the mankind, which have greatly contributed to the social progress of human race.
Professional literatures have been regarded as "intangible assets" of the whole world because they are, on one hand, the summary, generalization, and development of the achievement obtained on the basis of previous experiences or studies, and on the other hand, they have been accumulated and handed down from generation to generation. In this sense, therefore, all kinds of literatures are records of previous research findings and academic achievements, and crystallization of human civilization.
