问答题For some children life begins at 3
BEIJING, Sep. 6 (China Daily) —All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But for some Chinese parents with young children, too much play and too little work may be even worse. At least it seems so judging by their reactions to the first official guidelines on education for preschoolers.
While emphasizing the physical, social and emotional development of children aged 3—6, the draft instructions by the Ministry of Education have set forth minimal academic requirements that are causing panic among urban middle-class parents who fear the criteria, if implemented, will shortchange their children"s opportunity to learn and end the nation"s time-honored tradition of tough education from an early age.
One of the most criticized study objectives given by the guidelines, which were recently posted on the Internet for input from the public, is that children aged 5-6 who are about to enter Primary One, are only required to learn to add or subtract up to 10. Another is related to their language skill, which is prescribed as "an interest in words and symbols that come with certain meaning".
Though their children may already be whiz-kids at math or language by these official standards, many parents are not satisfied. A recent study of more than 1,000 urban Chinese parents shows that prior to their kids entering primary school, 89 percent of them have prepped their children in math and Chinese; 28 percent in a foreign language, while another 20 percent have sent their children to study some Primary One courses in advance.
Let"s face it, in an education system that hinges on a series of competitive exams that lead the successful candidate into the best schools and the best jobs, a carefully planned early leg-up is necessary to ensure our children are not left behind.
When given the choice, the majority of Chinese parents say they would spend significantly more time on raising a smart kid than a healthy or nice kid. For most people, there is no better way for their children to get smarter than making them study harder and longer. It"s instilling a work ethic at a young age that will serve a child his whole lifetime. This may explain why a mother will ask her 5-year-old to spend hours on homework in the evening, copying Chinese characters learned in kindergarten class or solving arithmetic problems.
But this is not what the education authorities want to see. The guidelines are meant to make the lives of young children less stressful, and serve as a wake-up call to "overzealous" parents who are caught up in the national early-education craze.
It remains to be seen if parents will be convinced that their children should enjoy more time on the playground without changes to the school system. So far the guidelines seem to have only won praise from parents who are disappointed in their children"s academic performance.

问答题How do you understand the role of linguistic research in social and economic development? (南开大学2004研)
问答题(1) If you believe the Macroeconomists, Europe's new common currency will bring either economic chaos or the dawn of a new era of growth, restructuring, and prosperity. But for those who will be dealing with the euro on a daily basis, the new currency leads to a much more pragmatic dilemma: just how to put a price on everything from butter to Big Macs.
There's little doubt that consumer demand will lead to some pricing changes, especially after euro notes and coins are issued in 2002. Consider Magnum ice cream bars, which Unilever sells across Europe. In France they cost about $2.50, while in the Netherlands they cost $1 Priced in guilders and francs, the difference isn't so noticeable. (2) But when priced in euros beginning next year, French ice cream lovers will soon figure out that they're paying 2.5 times what the Dutch are paying. The same is true for a vast number of products. "Currently we have different prices in different countries, which isn't so visible with different currencies," says Gunther Moissl of German mail order house Quelle Schickendanz. "The moment you price in euros, you can see it "
Of course, nobody is going to drive across borders just to buy cheaper ice cream. But they already do for big-ticket items such as cars. (3) Moreover, says Jan Haars, Unilever treasurer: "The attitude of the consumer toward your product may change if he feels ice cream is twice as expensive at home as it is somewhere else."
Thus, most everybody thinks the euro will force prices to converge. Volkswagen, which has been slapped with fines by the European Commission for trying to keep Germans from buying its cars at cheaper prices in Italy, says it has already narrowed price diffentials to 105. Wolfgang Hartung, head of the Euro project at Daimler-Benz, warns that anyone who thinks they can maintain vastly different prices in the era of the euro is engaged in wishful thinking. "People are too well-informed,' says Hartung.
Big price differences for the same product have been a fact Of life for years in Europe. (4) Manufacturers justify this by citing differences in taxes, distribution and labor costs, foreign-exchange risk, even local taste. For example, Quelle says it charges German women more for bathing suits than Spanish women because Germans demand higher quality. “In Germany, the weight of the fabric must be higher,' says Moissl, Quelle’s controller.”The Spanish accept poorer quality."
Moissl’s not too concerned about maintaining price differentials for bathing suits—local tastes in fashion, for instance, can justify ongoing price differentials—but the pricing of such things as CD players is more problematic. The product doesn't differ much and can easily be shipped across borders. (5) Quelle says it is thinking about raising prices in less expensive countries to prevent middleman from buying, say, in Spain and then selling in Germany.

When you are in the business of sending spacecraft to other planets, it is probably wise to do everything you can to keep your space-probes sterile (无菌的).
NASA, America"s space agency, certainly does so. After all, you would not want bugs from one planet to contaminate another where they might possibly thrive.
But according to Curt Mileikowsky, of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, this may already have happened naturally billions of years ago when the solar system was young. For Dr Mileikowsky has taken a century-old idea called panspermia (有生源说), and shown that it is plausible.
22
Panspermia is the theory that life does not start independently on each planet that has it (assuming that other planets do). Rather, it hops from place to place, "infecting" new worlds as it goes.
Supported by experts in biology, geology and celestial mechanics, Dr Mileikowsky argued to the American Astronomical Society meeting in Atlanta that this is not as outlandish as it sounds.
23
Bungling (笨手笨脚的) space organizations apart, the only mode of travel open to microbes seems to be meteorites (流星). Most of these are small bits of junk from the asteroid (小行星) belt that have gone off course.
But some are rocks that have been flung into space from the surfaces of planets as a result of those planets having been struck by even larger bits of rock-decent-sized asteroids or comets.
24
If there is life on such a planet, microscopic forms of it will probably live deep inside rocks, as they do on earth. The acceleration of lift-off would not kill something that size.
25
If a rock is large enough, the heat generated as it is thrown clear will be negligible except at its surface—where, if anything, melting may even produce an airtight skin to protect any microbes deeper down from the unpleasant vacuum of space.

问答题It is commonly acknowledged that honesty is the best policy but just what is meant by honesty and why is it the best policy? And what is meant by best? The implications of being honest would seem to be obvious, but if we look more deeply, (1) there are advantages to adopting honesty as a way of living that do not at first present themselves clearly. (2) There are hidden benefits in being honest that are beyond the traditional perceptions about what being honest affords us. Honesty is least of all about what we say and most of all about how we are. (3) It is most important to understand that honesty cannot even be restricted to the definition of our actions, for there is a whole network of behavior that is affected by our degree of honesty and the degree to which we allow honesty to saturate our lives. The absolute nature of honesty sees to it that we cannot apply it selectively. It is quite impossible to be truly honest with one person while all the other lying to ourselves about someone else. It is not realistic to assume that we can maintain a dishonest relationship with one friend and maintain an honest relationship with another. Friendship could not exist if we were able to perform such a feat. (4) It is true then, that honesty applies not only to the words we say and the things we do, but also in the feelings we feel and how we allow those feelings to impact on our lives and on our perception of our lives. (5) It is not commonly recognized that honesty applies as much to our relationship with our feelings as it does to any other aspect of our lives and yet perhaps this is the most important in terms of how it affects us. It must be remembered that usually our feelings are the most significant representatives of our relationship with ourselves. In a sense, our feelings and what we do about those feelings essentially define our outlook on life. It is easily demonstrated in the media that individuals are often defined by how they feel about issues. For example, if an individual is opposed to abortion, they will be described as an "anti-abortionist". If an unruly dog attacks someone's child, then a likely description could be "outraged parent". Perhaps a group of local people objects to something happening in their street, a possible description might read "angry residents".
