问答题Teachers and students like to say, " God helps those who help themselves. " They use this remark to encourage others and themselves to work hard. However, in real life, we may often find that " God" does not always help those who work very hard to help themselves. Many migrant workers have worked very hard, but they and their families remain poor. Primary school children in a mountainous village may study hard, but the chances are often slim for them to enter a university. So, what do you think of this remark after all? Does it tell a truth or a lie? Write an essay in 400 to 500 words to clarify and support your opinion. In this essay, you must have a clear statement of your opinion, you should give at least two reasons in support of your opinion, and you should give reasons why the opinion or opinions you oppose are wrong or are not as well developed as your opinion.

问答题Scientists are searching for ways to destroy nuclear weapons in space—to make nuclear weapons powerless and no longer useful. This has become known as "Star Wars". (1) Supporters of the Star Wars defense system hope that this would not only protect a nation against an actual nuclear attack, but would be enough of a threat to keep a nuclear war from ever happening. (2) Opponents of Star Wars are worried that a system might introduce nuclear weapons into outer space and might not completely protect the nation against attack. Some missiles might "leak through" the Star Wars defenses. Or the computers that run the system might not work properly. Such a defense system, they say, might also be used to attack others. And it might not stop the buildup of ground-based nuclear weapons. Hopefully, a nuclear war will never begin. But, in such an event, could people really protect themselves? Supporters of Star Wars believe that laser weapons are the key to defense. (3) But can laser beams be developed in such a way to destroy attacking missiles in space? Lasers are not new. They have been around for over 25 years. They involve the following process: (4) Atoms of certain substances are stimulated, or excited, by a burst of energy from outside. The excited atoms then produce waves of light. These light waves travel up and down a laser rod and excite, or stimulate, other atoms. When a particular energy level is reached, the laser rod produces a strong, narrow beam of radiation. Most lasers give off visible light, but they can be built to produce heat radiation or even X-ray radiation. Because of the intensity and narrowness of their beams, lasers can be put to thousands of uses. Laser beams have been bounced off the moon. They can cut through diamond or steel. They are used by doctors for delicate surgery—such as repairing damaged eyes. And lasers are also used as weapons. (5) They can give artillery an accuracy as sharp as the point of a pin. They can also "blind" electronic systems in planes, tanks and ships. This means that those electronic systems can no longer effectively find and destroy their targets.

问答题The teaching of English as a second language (ESL) in schools has had a history of conflicting arguments, interesting innovations and some very positive methodological changes. To understand the present situation, it is necessary to consider the past and the wider educational context which has a bearing on it. Until quite recently, approaches to ESL work have been strongly influenced by methods developed to teach English as a foreign language to older learners. These methods placed much emphasis on drills, exercises and remedial programs that focus on language in abstraction. 46) The prescriptive nature of such methods and the demands they made on the teacher"s time developed the belief that ESL work could be tackled only by the specialist ESL teacher working with small groups of children . Such an approach does not fit comfortably into current notions of learning and teaching in the primary school, nor does it sufficiently equip ESL learners in the secondary school to benefit from normal schooling. 47) In prescribing what language is to be taught, it has ignored what children bring to the learning task and the choices they make about how and what they want to learn . Furthermore, the location and organization of language provision did not measure up to the demand. 48) The language centers and English language services all contributed to providing special and concentrated teaching of English as a second language in small groups, varying in size from four or five to fifteen . Whatever the pattern of provision, the main aim was to give pupils sufficient English to enable them to join normal schools as quickly as possible. The success of such special provision depended very much on the close and constant liaison of language teachers with the subject teachers and the class teachers and on the continuity of learning experiences provided by them. 49) One of the important disadvantages of language centers and withdrawal groups was that ESL children were being taught away from those English- speakers who provide the most powerful models, i. e. their peer group . Peer-group interaction is an important element in any learning situation, but its particular strengths in a classroom with ESL learners cannot be overemphasized. 50) The separation of second language learners from the mainstream classroom cannot easily be justified on educational grounds, since in practice it leads to both their curriculum and language learning being impoverished .

问答题 Science and politics are inextricably linked. At a scientific conference on climate change held this week in Copenhagen, four environmental experts announced that sea levels appear to be rising almost twice as rapidly as had been forecast by the United Nations just two years ago. (46){{U}}The warning is aimed at politicians who will meet in the same city in December to discuss the same subject and, perhaps, to thrash out an international agreement to counter it.{{/U}} The reason for the rapid change in the predicted rise in sea levels is a rapid increase in the information available. (47){{U}}In 2007, when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change convened by the UN made its prediction that sea levels would rise by between 18cm and 59cm by 2100, a lack of knowledge about how the polar ice caps were behaving was behind much of the uncertainty.{{/U}} Since then they have been closely monitored, and the results are disturbing. Both the Greenland and the Antarctic caps have been melting at an accelerating rate. Indeed, scientists now reckon that sea levels will rise by between 50era and 100era by 2100, unless action is taken to curb climate change. (48){{U}}Konrad Steffen, a professor of the University of Colorado, told the conference that this sheet is melting not only because it is warmer but also because water seeping through its crevices is breaking it up, whose effect had been neglected in the earlier report. {{/U}}The impact of the melting ice has been measured by John Church of the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research. He told the conference that satellite and ground-based systems showed that sea levels have been rising more rapidly since 1993. He is concerned that more climate change could cause a further acceleration in this rate. Stefan of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research told the conference that, “based on past experience, I expect that sea-level rise will accelerate as the planet gets hotter.” (49){{U}}He was supported in this view by the fourth expert, Eric Rignot of the University of California, who called for the world’s leaders to slash the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.{{/U}} Advance negotiations on the UN Climate Change Conference are due to begin in Bonn in just over a fortnight’s time. The scientists hope that their startling warnings will change the outcome of that pre-meeting meeting. (50){{U}}With much still to argue over, they hope that a clear scientific lead will both help to narrow the room for disagreement and galvanize the desire to get a treaty agreed.{{/U}}

Nearly every society in human history has considered its own language finer, its own food tastier, its own manners more refined (or more honest), its own morals better (or more sensible), and its own religion the one true religion. (1) {{U}}In smaller groups ethnocentrism takes the form of "team spirit", "local pride", and "company morale."{{/U}} Taken to extremes, ethnocentrism easily leads to chauvinism (the glorification of one's own group along with fear and hatred of others), racial and religious oppression, warfare, and even genocide. In moderate forms, however, ethnocentrism makes for high morale and effective cooperation within a group. (2) {{U}}Whether in a football team before a big game or in a nation at war, ethnocentric feelings have the beneficial effect of mobilizing and uniting a threatened group against its enemy.{{/U}} Finally, ethnocentrism can provide satisfaction and comfort. People often make themselves feel better by believing in other's inferiority. "At least I'm not a grind." An important step in the uphill struggle of American blacks and women to win social equality was the increased self-esteem generated by such ethnocentric slogans as "Black is beautiful" and "Sisterhood is powerful." As soon as it became clear that ethnocentrism was a common phenomenon, social scientists realized that they themselves might be unfairly judging the behavior of different peoples according to their own cultural values. (3) {{U}}To avoid any taint of ethnocentric prejudice, anthropologists began to adopt an attitude of cultural relativism; the view that human thoughts and deeds should be judged not by any outside standards but only by those of the society or group in which they take place.{{/U}} Cultural relativism thus stood for scientific objectivity, fair-mindedness, and liberalism. It rapidly became the dominant view in anthropology and sociology. At first, some anthropologists interpreted cultural relativism so rigidly that they refused to make any judgments whatever about human behavior. (4) {{U}}In the 1930s the anthropologist Ruth Benedict maintained, for instance, that the cultures of the world were all equally valid patterns of life and nothing any people did was invalid if it was in harmony with the rest of their culture.{{/U}} Paradoxically, the extreme cultural relativists, who wanted to give all other peoples due respect and resist all tendencies toward ethnocentrism in themselves, were drawn to the logical conclusion that anything goes—infanticide, headhunting, slavery, torture, ritual mutilation—provided only that it is in accord with the culture in which it occurs. History soon exposed the fallacy of this doctrine of total objectivity. Under Hitler, the Nazis enslaved millions and put millions more to death. (5) {{U}}After the 1930s it was no longer possible for scholars to maintain the stance of total cultural relativism.{{/U}} While contemporary anthropologists and sociologists continue to believe that the practices of another people cannot be judged on the same terms as their own culture, they also believe that those practices can be judged in the light of universal values and basic human requirements. Thus, any cultural practice that conflicts with such universal human needs as emotional security, physical health, and self-preservation should not be deemed as valid as practices that serve those needs.
