填空题As Wall Street's giants take massive write-downs, fears are growing about the impact on technology budgets. The troubles in the finance sector going to hit tech? Since technology companies rely heavily on Wall Street, it's been a growing question as financial giants have taken one massive hit after another. 【K1】______On Nov. 7, Cisco reported fiscal first-quarter earnings and CEO John Chambers disappointed investors with a softer-than-expected outlook for the rest of the year, in large part because of the financial sector. " In the U.S. and the enterprise[markets], we did see some softness, " Chambers said. "The finance vertical was the one hardest hit. If the trouble on Wall Street continues or worsens, the consequences for tech could be severe because financial services companies are far and away the most ravenous consumers of tech in the U. S. 【K2】______"We think that information-technology spending could slow down quite a bit in the next 12 months, based on what's happened in the last month, " says Stephen Minton, vice-president for worldwide IT markets research at tech researcher IDC. The reason? The sheer size of Wall Street's tech budgets. 【K3】______Over the years, banks and investment firms have come to represent an ever-increasing proportion of total tech demand, as they developed ever-more-complicated financial products and trading strategies that required faster computers, more number-crunching software, and more efficient networks. 【K4】______Chambers is still predicting Cisco will boost sales 16% in the second fiscal quarter and long-term revenue growth will be between 12% and 17%. For the overall tech industry, IDC's Minton estimates that if financial companies do cut back their tech budgets, total IT spending would grow 3% or 4% , rather than the expected 5% to 6%. Not all segments of tech would be affected equally. Hardware companies, such as PC makers, storage manufacturers, and mainframe sellers, including IBM, Dell, and Sun Microsystems, would feel the biggest impact. Software companies that make business-intelligence and collaboration software, such as Oracle and SAP, would also be hit. 【K5】______ The situation would be much worse if mortgage woes spread further, causing a significant drop in consumer spending and hurting the retailing, telecom, media, and manufacturing sectors. At that point, IT growth in the U. S. would slow to 1% to 2% , Minton estimates. Choose the following sentences marked A to E to complete the above article. Write your answer on the Answer Sheet. A. Tech services, such as Accenture, Cognizant Technology Solutions, and Electronic Data Systems, would probably see the least impact, since they usually help companies cut costs and work on five-year contracts. B. As financial services continues to struggle in the wake of the subprime mortgage shock, raising more questions about future earnings and layoffs, the specter of an overall tech-spending crunch is beginning to loom C. Not that it's a crisis for tech, at least not yet. D. The write-offs are expected to continue. E. The financial-services industry accounts for 23% of all business spending on hardware, software, and tech services, or 18% or the $432 billion U. S. total once consumer buying is included.

填空题{{B}}Directions:{{/B}}You are going to read a list of headings and a text
about happiness. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each
numbered paragraph (41- 45). The first and last paragraphs of the text are not
numbered. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. Mark your
answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.
[A] Extensive applications of haptic technology.
[B] Possibilities rendered by haptic mechanisms. [C] The
feasibility of extending our senses and exploring abstract universes.
[D] An example of the progress in science of haptics. [E]
Bringing the potential of our senses into full play. [F] Will
haptics step into a bright future? "OOOF!" Using your mouse, you
heave a data file across the screen--a couple of gigabytes of data weigh a lot.
Its rough surface tells you that it is a graphics file. Having tipped this
huge pile of data into a hopper that sends it to the right program, you examine
a screen image of the forest trail you'll be hiking on your vacation. Then,
using a gloved hand, you master its details by running your fingers over its
forks and bends, its sharp rises and falls. Later you send an E-mail to your
beloved, bending to the deskpad to attach a kiss. 41.
__________. The science of haptics (from the Greek haptesthai,
"to touch") is making these fantasies real. A few primitive devices are
extending human-machine communication beyond vision and sound. Haptic joysticks
and steering wheels for computer games are already giving happy players some of
the sensations of piloting a spaceship, driving a racing car or firing weapons.
In time, haptic interfaces may allow us to manipulate single molecules, feel
clouds and galaxies, even reach into higher dimensions to grasp the subtle
structures of mathematics. 42. __________. Most
of our senses tire passive. In hearing and vision, for example, the sound or
light is simply received and analyzed. But touch is different: we actively
explore and alter reality with our hands, so the same action that gathers
information can also change the world--to model a piece of clay or press a
button, for example. In providing direct contact between people, touch carries
emotional impact. And in providing direct contact with the world, it is the sure
sign of reality, as in "pinch me--am I dreaming?" 43.
__________. Some small steps have even been taken towards
whole-body haptics. Touch Technology of Nova Scotia, Canada, has built a haptic
chair. It looks like a full-length lounge chair in a family den, but its surface
is studded with 72 "tactors" -pneumatic piston rods, covered with rounded
buttons, that can extend about an inch, and can be driven under computer control
in any desired sequence and pattern. It could be programmed to imitate a
real massage or to function in time to music. According to the manufacturer,
that provides a powerful blending of sen-sations--a long-term goal of virtual
reality. 44. __________. Even at its present
crude level, however, haptics can make tangible what once could not be touched
or even pictured. To investigate the world of the very small, researchers at the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, have developed the nanoManipulator.
This adds touch to the technique of scanning probe microscopy, which can image a
single atom by monitoring either the electrical current flowing between an
extremely fine probe and a surface or the force between them. With the
nanoManipulator, researchers can see and manipulate a universe a million times
smaller than their own, to study viruses and tiny semiconducting devices. If the
force feedback can be made sensitive enough, it may be possible to push
molecular keys into specific molecular locks, to custom-design drugs or assemble
silicon parts into intricate nanomachines. With other interfaces, there is no
reason we shouldn't also be able to touch the very large-clouds, ocean currents,
mantle flows, mountains, galaxy clusters. Or the very strong--with a suitable
force scaling, new ceramics or alloys could be squeezed and twanged to test
their engineering properties. Or the physically extreme and
inaccessible--such as ultra hot plasma flows in fusion machines.
45. __________. Haptic technology could even make abstract
ideas tangible. Many scientific concepts occupy spaces of more than three
dimensions, string theory, for' example, asserts that we live in a 10 or
11-dimensional Universe. As it is impossible to visualise such a space, we
explore these ideas' through mathematical expressions or two dimensional
sketches on paper. But probing these unfamiliar geometries with touch may
be more effective. And for blind people, haptics offers a new way to grasp
information even in three dimensions. A group at the University of
Delaware has developed an environment where a person can feel a mathematical
function. Using a PHAN-TOM, the user "walks" along the surface of the figure.
Like a hiker following mountainous terrain, the user feels where the function is
steep, where it is level, and where its peaks and valleys lie. Other haptic
systems could help blind people to browse the Internet, feeling images as well
as words. The future of haptics is bright, but the only sensual
relationship it will be sustaining any time soon is between you and your
computer.

填空题The making of weathervanes (devices fixed on the top of buildings to show directions of the wind) is an ancient skill, going back to early Egyptian times. Today the craft is still very much alive in the workshop that Graham Smith has set up. He is one of the few people in the country who make hand-cut weathervanes. Graham's designs are individually created and tailored to the specific requirements of his customers. "That way I can produce a unique personalized item," he explains, "A lot of my customers are women buying presents for their husbands. They want a distinctive gift that represents the man's business or leisure interests." It's all a far cry from the traditional cock, the most common design for weathervanes. It was not a cock but a witch on a broomstick that featured on the first weathervane Graham ever made. Friends admired his surprise present for his wife and began asking him to make vanes for them. "I realized that when it came to subjects that could be made into them, the possibilities were limitless," he says. (41) ___________________ That was five years ago and he has no regrets about his new direction. "My previous work didn't have an artistic element to it, whereas this is exciting and creative," he says, "I really enjoy the design side." (42) ___________________ Graham also keeps plenty of traditional designs in stock, since they prove as popular as the one-offs. "It seems that people are attracted to handcrafting,' Graham says, "They welcome the opportunity to acquire something a little bit different." (43) ___________________ "I have found my place in the market. People love the individuality and I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a nondescript shape turn into something almost lifelike,' he says. (44) "And nowadays, with more and more people moving to the country, individuals want to put an exclusive finishing touch to their properties. It has bean a boost to crafts like mines," (45) ___________________ American and Danish huyers in particular are showing interest. "Pricing," he explains, "depends on the intricacy of the design. "His most recent request was for a curly-coated dog. Whatever the occasion, Graham can create a gift with a difference.[A] Graham has become increasingly busy, supplying flat-packed weathervanes to clients worldwide.[B] Graham decided to concentrate his efforts on a weathervane business. He had served an apprenticeship as a precision engineer and had worked in that trade for 15 years when he and his wife, Liz, agreed to swap role--she went out to work as an architectural assistant and he stayed at home to look after the children and build up the business.[C] Last month, a local school was opened with his galleon ship weathervane hoisted above it.[D] "For centuries, weathervanes have kept communities in touch with the elements, signaling those shifts in wind directions that bring about changes in the weather," he explains.[E] Graham has no plans for expansion, as he wants to keep the business as a rural craft.[F] Graham has now perfected over 100 original designs. He works to very fine detail, always seeking approval for the design of the silhouette from the customer before proceeding with the hand-cutting.
