Sport is one of the world’s largest industries, and most athletes are professionals who are paid for their efforts. Because an athlete succeeds by achievement only—not by economic ground or family connections—sports can be a fast route to wealth, and many athletes play only for money than for love. This has not always been true. In the ancient Olympics the winner got only a wreath of olive leaves (橄榄叶花环). Even though the winners became national heroes, the games remained amateur for centuries. Athletes won fame, but no money. As time passed, however, the contests became increasingly less amateur and cities began to hire athletes to represent them. By the fourth century A.D., the Olympics were ruined, and they were soon ended. In 1896, the Olympic games were revived (使再度兴起) with the same goal of pure amateur competition. The rules bar athletes who have ever received a $50 prize or an athletic scholars or who have spent four weeks in a training camp. At least one competitor in the 1896 games met these qualifications. He was Spiridon Loues, a water carrier who won the marathon race, after race, a rich Athenian offered him anything he wanted. A true amateur, Loues accepted only a cart and a horse. Then he gave up running forever. But Loues was an exception and now, as the Chairman of the German Olympic Committee said, “Nobody pays any attention to these rules.” Many countries pay their athletes to train year-round, and Olympic athletes are eager to sell their names to companies that make everything from ski equipment to fast food. Even the games themselves have become a huge business. Countries fight to hold the Olympics not only for honor, but for money. The 1972 games in Munich cost the Germans 545 million dollars, but by selling medal symbols, TV rights, food, drink, hotel rooms, and souvenirs (纪念品), they managed to make a profit. Appropriately, the symbol of victory in the Olympic games is no longer a simple olive wreath—it is a gold medal. S1. To many people, sports today is nothing but S1. S2. 结构推理 Directions: Read the following passage carefully and give brief answers to the questions. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. There are robots (机器人) all around us. Some do very difficult jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains and some do one simple joB、 When an automatic washing machine is turned on, water pours in. The machine waits until the water is hot before washing the clothes. It does this by feedback (反馈). Information about what is happening is fed back into the robot to tell it what to do next. Our eyes, ears and other senses are our feedback. They tell us what is going on around us. So robots are like people in two ways. They work and they receive feedback. There are robots all around, making our lives easier. Some of them, like the pocket calculator, can work much more quickly than human beings can. And they seldom make mistakes. In some ways robots are better than people. They work quickly, but do not make mistakes. They do not lose interest doing the same job over and over again. And they never get tireD、 Robots are very useful in factories. They can be taught to do many different jobs. Their electronic brains must be shown how the job is done. A person moves the robot’s "arms" and "hands" through each part of the joB、 The robot's brain remembers each move. Then the robot is put to work on its own. If the robot's hand stops working, or if something gets in the way, it cannot do the next part of the joB、 So it stops and signals for help. Then a human engineer attends to the problem. The most "intelligent" robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their metal fingers can feel shapes and even find out how hot and cold objects are. These robots have computer brains linked to their eyes and fingers to control their actions. 1. What happens when an automatic washing machine is turned on? 2. In what ways are robots like people? 3. Why do some robots work better than people? 4. How are robots taught to do a job? 5. What are the qualities of the most intelligent robots?

结构推理 Directions: In this part there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words). What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say, "I wish I could help you, but I'm short of money myself." In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly but telling a "white lie", such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say the men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention to fulfill. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying, "I wish I were somewhere else now." They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒). Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls "the mouth cover". He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt of the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying. Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proofs that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told. 1.According to the passage, on what occasion is a "white lie" told? 2.Compared with women, what kind of lies are men better at telling? 3.It is stated in the essay that politicians and businessmen are skilled at telling lies in order to 4.Researchers find that when a person tells ties, he tends to 5.One reason why people sometimes rub their nose when they tell lies is that the nose
