问答题Certainly people do not seem less interested in success and what it can do for us now than formerly. Summer homes, European vacations, travel, BMW"s—such items do not seem less in demand than they did a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot admit their dreams as easily and openly as they once could, lest they be thought of as pushing, acquisitive, and vulgar. For such people and many more perhaps not so outstanding, the proper action seems to be, "Succeed at all costs but refrain from appearing ambitious." The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles, while its public defenders are few and ineffective. As a result, the support for ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and cultivated in the young, is probably lower than it has ever been in the United States.

1. Today, many countrymen are returning after they finish their study abroad.
2. Reasons for their returning.
3. Significance of their returning both to China and to themselves.
问答题{{B}}Directions:{{/B}} Read the following passage carefully and then translate
each underlined part into Chinese.
71.{{U}}You know as well as I do that scientists who misuse their science and
their knowledge in order to make nuclear arms, or poison gas, or to manipulate
genes could always be found and can still be found. I have often wondered what
is going on in the minds of such people. {{/U}}Do they not know what they are
doing? Are they tempted in their well-paid jobs by the men behind the scenes? Or
are they so obsessed with the hatred of an alien ideological concept or a
foreign nation that they accept any means to kill their enemies, even though
they are certainly aware that the whole world may be destroyed?
72. {{U}}Without doubt we can only agree with the Russian academician and
biologist W. A. Engelhardt, who raised the question of the increasing
responsibility of scholars and scientists in view of increasing global dangers,
in the origin of which their creators, that is to say the scientists, have
participated. {{/U}}Above all this reproach is directed towards the natural
sciences. Nevertheless we are not able to and will not slow down the process of
scientific progress. There is no way back into some illusive
idyll. The people who are dangerous are those who, wherever they are in the
world, dedicate their knowledge and their talents to killing or even to possible
world war. I think it is also a task for peace research to investigate the
personality, the psyche, the motivations of scientists who believe in the
possibility of solving the serious problems of humankind by technological means.
A still typical example of such narrow-mindedness was and unfortunately still is
the assumption that SDI ( Strategic Defense Initiative) could eliminate the
danger of a nuclear strike against the USA. 73. {{U}}We must
always be aware---to loosely cite the reflections of the English Nobel prize
winner M. H. F. Wikins--that dealing with science does not necessarily turn us
into better human beings. {{/U}}On the contrary, research work that corresponds
with our ideals demands very much from us as human beings. We need a great sense
of responsibility and much energy in order to conduct creative research work for
peace, and we have to remain modest in order as scientists to maintain our
humanity.

(46) {{U}}Culture, in a broad sense, means the total way of life of a people,
including the patterns of belief, customs, institutions, techniques, and
language that characterize the life of the group.{{/U}} As culture is so
inclusive, it permeates virtually every aspect of human life and influences
predominantly people's behavior, including linguistic behavior.
(47) {{U}}When we learn a new word we tend to look for its meaning in the
word itself; however, in addition to its dictionary meanings, the same word may
stir up different associations in different people.{{/U}} Take the word dog for
example. In the United States, the word dog in most instances conjures up an
image of a furry, domesticated family pet. In some areas of the world, such as
South Korea, however, dogs are considered to be a culinary amenity and often are
eaten. Therefore, the word dog elicits a quite different meaning because of
different cultural experiences. This example indicates that language is heavily
tinted with its culture. (48) {{U}}From the above, we can infer
that a language not only expresses facts, ideas, or events which represent
shared world knowledge of its people, but also reflects the people's attitudes
beliefs, world outlooks etc.{{/U}} In a word, language expresses cultural reality.
When a child acquires his mother tongue, he also acquires a language-specific
culture and becomes socialized in certain ways. If he moves to another community
or country, he may be recognized easily not as a member of the local community
group but as a newcomer from the ways he uses his language. This implies that
language embodies cultural identity. As language is tightly
intertwined with culture, learning a language is inseparable from learning its
culture. (49) {{U}}When learning a foreign language, we should not only learn the
mere imitation of the pronunciation, grammar, words and idioms but also learn to
see the world as native speakers do, that is to say, learn the wags in which the
foreign language reflects the ideas, customs, and behavior of that society,
learn to understand their "language of the mind".{{/U}} We need to learn enough
about the language's culture so that we can communicate in the target language
properly to achieve not only the linguistic competence but also communicative
competence. This is of great significance in learning a foreign language. (50)
{{U}}Otherwise the ignorance of cultural differences between mother tongue and
target language will inevitable create barriers in learning the target language,
thus causing some misunderstandings and confusions frequently.{{/U}}
