单选题New Year"s Eve requires the ultimate party outfit. But what if your holiday spending has burned holes in your pockets? The answer might be to rent a little luxury. The renting business has begun to lose the image of an industry filled with designer tuxedos, Halloween costumes or out-of-date evening wear. Still largely an industry dedicated to special-event clothing (dinners, corporate parties, weddings), it has started to branch out into more casual clothing. And for those not afraid to shop around, it has become an option for dressing up on a budget . For the price of rentals (£150, or $260, for a four-day period) , the only things available in most department stores are dresses that look as if they are late for the party." Working women have sophisticated tastes, but buying an evening dress is a very expensive proposition, and most people don"t want to wear the same dress more than once," says Doniger. But what has brought on this recent change in perception on renting luxury? Unexpectedly, the transformation has been helped along by a change in corporate policy by many top businesses. For years businessmen all over the world have gotten a clothing allowance from their companies to rent a tuxedo or other luxury items they need for an event. But while any company looking at the bottom line is not going to pay for a female employee to buy a new evening dress, they are now more willing to help pay for renting one. "In the last five years a lot of businesses have started to pay for some if not all of a rental. They will pay, say, £80 or £90 of the cost and let the women top off the rest themselves," says Doniger. But renting luxury fashion is not limited to clothing. Having the latest must-have designer handbag is the fastest way for a woman to communicate her fashion savvy and display her luxury status. The rental stores can give the everyday woman a chance to wear the latest designer bag and feel like a million bucks without having to spend it.

单选题 There seems never to have been a civilization without toys, but when and how they developedis unknown. They probably came about just to five children something to do. In the ancient world, as is today, most boys played with some kinds of toys and most girlswith another. In societies where social roles are rigidly determined, boys pattern their play afterthe activities of their fathers and girls after the tasks of their mothers. This is true because boys andgirls are being prepared, even in play, to step into the roles and responsibilities of the adultworld. What is remarkable about the history of toys is not so much how they changed over the cen-turies but how much they have remained the same. The changes have been mostly in terms ofcraftsmanship, mechanics, and technology. It is the universality of toys with regard to their de-velopment in all part of the world and their persistence to the present that is amazing. In Egypt, the Americas, China, Japan and among the Arctic (北极的) peoples, generally the samekinds of toys appeared. Variations depended on local customs and ways of life because toys imitatetheir surroundings. Nearly every civilization had dolls, little weapons, toy soldiers, tiny animalsand vehicles. Because toys can be generally regarded as a kind of art form, they have not been subject totechnological leaps that characterize inventions for adult use. The progress from the wheel to theoxcart to the automobile is a direct line of ascent (进步) .The progress from a rattle (拨浪鼓)used by a baby in 3000 B. C. to one used by an infant today, however, is not characterized byinventiveness. Each rattle is the product of the artistic tastes of the times and subject to the limita-tions of available materials.

单选题How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and dull.

单选题Above all know your audience and match what you say to their needs. Creating your presentation with your audience in mind will assure that your audience will follow you. If your presentation doesn"t appeal to your audience—no matter how well you have developed your presentation—your presentation will fall on deaf ears. This leads us to the next rule: Know your material thoroughly. Your material needs to be second nature to you. Practice and rehearse your presentation with friends, in front of a mirror, and with colleagues. If you are speaking in a second language, make sure that you record yourself and listen to a number of times before going to practice with a native speaker (if possible). Remember that you are an actor when presenting. Make sure that not only your physical appearance is appropriate to the occasion, but also the tone you use is well chosen. If your topic is serious, be solemn. However, it"s always a good idea to begin your presentation with an ice-breaker. Don"t worry about making friends, rather lead the audience through your materials in a calm and relaxed manner. Speak slowly and clearly, and remember to address everyone in the audience-even the person the farthest away from you. To achieve the above goals follow these tips when giving your presentation: ● Speak with conviction. Believe what you are saying and you will persuade your audience. ● Do not read from notes. Referring to notes is fine, but do so only briefly. ● Maintain eye contact with your audience. Making direct eye contact with individuals will help them feel as if they are participating in your presentation. ● Bring handouts. Don"t just use a PowerPoint presentation. Provide audience members with handouts of the most important materials so they can keep your most important takeaways in mind. ● Know when to stop. This cannot be underestimated. You need to make your case, but continuing for too long will only ensure that the audience forgets what you have said.

单选题 In 1784, five years before he became president of the United States, George Washington, 52, was nearly toothless. So he hired a dentist to transplant nine teeth into his jaw-having extracted them from the months of his slaves. That's far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the roles slavery played in the lives of the founding generation. They have been spurred in part by DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. And only over the past 30 years have scholars examined history from the bottom up. Works of several historians reveal the moral compromises made by the nation's early leaders and the fragile nature of the country's infancy. More significantly, they argue that many of the Founding Fathers knew slavery was wrong and yet most did little to fight it. More than anything, the historians say, the founders were hampered by the culture of their time. While Washington and Jefferson privately expressed distaste for slavery, they also understood that it was part of the political and economic bedrock of the country they helped to create. For one thing, the South could not afford to part with its slaves. Owning slaves was "like having a large bank account," says Wiencek, author of An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America. The southern states would not have signed the Constitution without protections for the "peculiar institution", including a clause that counted a slave as three fifths of a man for purposes of congressional representation. And the statesmen's political lives depended on slavery. The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating the votes of the southern states in the Electoral College. once in office, Jefferson extended slavery with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the new land was carved into 13 states, including three slave states. Still, Jefferson freed Hemings's children--though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves. Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will. only a decade earlier, such an act would have required legislative approval in Virginia.

单选题{{B}}Text 3{{/B}} There were two widely divergent influences on the early development of statistical methods. Statistics had a mother who was dedicated to keeping orderly records of governmental units (state and statistics come from the same Latin root, status) and a gentlemanly gambling father who relied on mathematics to increase his skill at playing the odds in games of chance. The influence of the mother on the offspring, statistics, is represented by counting, measuring, describing, tabulating, ordering, and the taking of censuses—all of which led to modem descriptive statistics. From the influence of the father came modem inferentical statistics, which is based squarely on theories of probability. Descriptive statistics involves tabulating, depicting, and describing collections of data. These data may be either quantitative, such as measures of height, intelligence, or grade level—variables that are characterized by an underlying continuum or the data may represent qualitative variable, such as sex, college major, or personality type. Large masses of data must generally undergo a process of summarization or reduction before they are comprehensible. Descriptive statistics is tool for describing or summarizing or reducing to comprehensible form the properties of an otherwise unwieldy mass of data. Inferential statistics is a formalized body of methods for solving another class of problems that present great difficulties for the unaided human mind. This general class of problems characteristically involves attempts to make predictions using a sample of observations. For example, a school superintendent wishes to determine the proportion of children in a large school system who come to school without breakfast, have been vaccinated for flu, or whatever. Having a little knowledge of statistics, the superintendent would know that it is unnecessary and inefficient to question each child; the proportion for the entire district could be estimated fairly accurately from a sample of as few as 100 children. Thus, the purpose of inferential statistics is to predict or estimate characteristics of a population from knowledge of the characteristics of only a sample of the population.
