问答题Some 350 million people of all ages, incomes and nationalities suffer from depression. Millions more—family, friends, co-workers-are exposed to the indirect effects of this under-appreciated global health crisis.
Depression diminishes people"s ability to cope with the daily challenges of life, and often precipitates family disruption, interrupted education and loss of jobs. In the most extreme eases, people kill themselves. Approximately one million people commit suicide every year, the majority due to unidentified or untreated depression.
People develop depression for a number of reasons. Often, different causes—genetic, biological, psychological and social—combine to provide the trigger. Stress, grief, conflict, abuse and unemployment can also contribute. Women are more likely to suffer depression than men, including following childbirth.
A wide variety of effective and affordable treatments are available to treat depression, including psychosocial interventions and medicines. However, they are not accessible to all people, especially those living in less developed countries and the least advantaged citizens of lnore developed nations. Among the barriers to care and services are social stigma and the lack of general health care providers and specialists trained to identify and treat depression. This is why the World Health Organization is supporting countries through its Mental Health Gap Action Programme.

问答题Read the argument and the instructions that follow it, and then make any notes that will help you plan your response. Write your response on a separate sheet of paper. If possible, type your essay on a word processor. A speaker at an electronic entertainment conference made the following statement: Video games have been widely criticized for having a negative effect on the nation's youth. If one looks at the facts, however, over the last 25 years, the period in which the use of video games became common among the nation's youth, math scores on the most commonly used college aptitude test have risen consistently and entry-level salaries for college graduates have also risen significantly. This evidence suggests that video games are actually providing young people with the skills they need to succeed in college and in the workplace. Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion, be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative examples or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

问答题The art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. For life is a paradox: it enjoins us to cling to its many gifts even while it ordains their eventual relinquishment. The rabbis of old put it this way: "A man comes to this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open." Surely we ought to hold fast to our life. For it is wondrous, and full of a beauty that breaks through every pore of God's own earth. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in our backward glance when we remember what it was and then suddenly realize that it is no more. We remember a beauty that faded, a love that waned. But we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we failed to respond with love when it was tendered.
Hold last to life—but not so fast that you cannot let go. This is the second side of life's coin, the opposite pole of its paradox: we must accept our losses, and learn how to let go. This is not an easy lesson to learn, especially when we are young and think that the world is ours to command, that whatever we desire with the full force of our passionate being can, nay, will be ours. But then life moves along to confront us with realities, and slowly but surely this truth dawns upon us. At every stage of life we sustain losses—and grow in the process. We begin our independent lives only when we emerge from the womb and lose its protective shelter. We enter a progression of schools, then we leave our mothers and fathers and our childhood homes. We get married and have children and then have to let them go. We confront the death of our parents and spouses. We face the gradual or not so gradual waning of our own strength. And ultimately, as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests, we must confront the inevitability of our own demise, losing ourselves, as it were, all that we were or dreamed to be.

71. {{U}}The main impression growing out of twelve years on the faculty of
medical school is that the No. 1 health problem in the U.S. today, even more
than AIDS or cancer, is that Americans don't know how to think about health and
illness.{{/U}} Our reactions are formed on the terror level. 72. {{U}}We fear the
worst, expect the worst, thus invite the worst and the result is that we are
becoming a nation of weaklings and hypochondriacs(臆想症患者), a self-medicating
society incapable of distinguishing between casual, everyday symptoms and those
that require professional attention{{/U}}. Somewhere in our early
education we become addicted to the notion that pain means sickness. We fail to
learn that pain is the body's way of informing the mind that we are doing
something wrong, not necessarily that something is wrong. We don't understand
that pain may be telling us that we are eating too much or the wrong things, or
that we are smoking too much or drinking too much, or that there is too much
emotional congestion in our lives, or that we are being worn down by having to
cope daily with overcrowded streets and highways, the pounding noise of garbage
grinders, or the cosmic distance between the entrance to the airport and the
departure gate. We get the message of pain all wrong. Instead of addressing
ourselves to the cause, we become pushovers for pills, driving the pain
underground and inviting it to return with increased authority.
73. {{U}}Early in life, too, we become seized with the bizarre idea that we
are constantly assaulted by invisible monsters called germs, and that we have to
be on constant alert to protect ourselves against their fury, but equal emphasis
is not given to the presiding fact that our bodies are superbly equipped to deal
with the little demons and the best way of forestalling an attack is to maintain
a sensible lifestyle{{/U}}.

问答题I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have an ordeal of the most grievous kind before us. We have many, many months of struggle and suffering before us. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word, It is victory. Victory at all costs; victory in spite of all terrors; victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.
