问答题The following poem is written for the mourning of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.Read it and answer the questions:O Captain! My Captain!O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done; The ship has weather"d every rack, the prize we sought is won,The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring. But O heart! Heart! Heart!O the bleeding drops of red!Where on the deck my Captain lies,Fallen cold and dead.O captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells;Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,For you bouquets and ribbon"d wreaths—for you the shores crowding,For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! Dear father! This arm beneath your head;It is some dream that on the deckYou"ve fallen cold and dead.My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchor"d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;Exult, O shores! And ring, O bells! But I, with mournful tread,Walk the deck my Captain lies,Fallen cold and dead.

问答题In the opening sentences of Wharton"s The House of Mirth we find the following: "..." what was Miss Bart doing in town at that season? If she had appeared to be catching a train, he might have inferred that he had come on her in the act of transition between one and another of the country houses which disputed her presence after the close of the Newport season, but her desultory air perplexed him. She stood apart from the crowd, letting it drift by her to the platform or the street, and wearing an air of irresolution which might, as she surmised, be the mask of a very definite purpose... An impulse of curiosity made him turn out of his direct line to the door, and stroll past her. He knew that if she did not wish to be seen she would contrive to elude him; and it amused him to think of putting her skill to the test.
What do we know about the kind of society Wharton will be describing from these sentences and opening moments of action?

问答题The autumn air was as crisp as the fresh-out-of-the-dryer flannel sheets that my mother would always put on our beds when the weather got chilly. The familiar sounds of a referee"s whistle and cheering fans brought back memories of going to high school football games. My stomach started talking when I smelled the scent of the hot dogs cooking near by. "Can you believe we are doing this?" My mother asked as her face reddened while the sun decreased and the wind picked up. "No, I can"t," my lather and I both said simultaneously. It seemed hardly impossible to fathom that we were sitting at My baby brother"s high school football game. Where had the past fourteen years gone?
I was in the family room of my house with my older brother, Brian. We nicely were playing together with blocks. I was five at the time. "Brian, Julie, come into the living room, we want to talk to you!" My dad said with excitement in his voice. It was then that I found out I was going to have a new brother or sister. My entire body lifted above the clouds and soared. I just loved babies. In the next couple of months, my life changed dramatically. We had to move out of our house and into a new neighborhood. This event was very specific in my life. Although I was so excited for a new sibling, I was extremely distraught about leaving my familiar home. It was almost as if I was a taut rope in a tug-of-war being pulled in both directions. "But Mom, the baby can sleep with me." I remember saying to my mother. Now that I look back on the situation, I realize that it was the "comfort and familiarity" of my house that made me upset about leaving.

问答题(66) High unemployment rates, especial among young workers, have led to protests in countries as varied as Latvia, Chile, Greece, Bulgaria and Iceland and contributed to strikes in Britain and France. (67) Last month, the government of Iceland, that economy is expected to contract 10 percent this year, collapsed and (68) the prime minister moved up national elections after weeks of protests by Icelanders angering by soaring unemployment and rising process. Just last week, the new United States director of national intelligence, Dennis C. Blair, told Congress that (69) instability caused by the global economical crisis had become the biggest security threat facing the United States, outpacing terrorism. (70) In emerging economies like those in Eastern Europe, there are fears that growing joblessness might encourage a move from free-market, pro-Western policies, (71) while in developed countries unemployment could bolster efforts to protect local industries in the expense of global trade. (72) Indeed, some European stimulus packages, as well one passed Friday in the United States, include protections for domestic companies, increasing the likelihood of protectionist trade battles. (73) Protectionist measures were an intense matter of discussion as finance minister from the Group of 7 economies met this weekend in Rome. (74) While the number of jobs in the United States have been falling since the end of 2007, the pace of layoffs in Europe, Asia and the developing world has caught up only recently (75) as in companies that resisted deed cuts in the past follow the lead of their American counterparts.
问答题In much of the developing world, lack of water is at the center of a vicious circle of inequality. Some women in Foro come down to the river five times a day—with one or two of the trips devoted to getting water to make a beer-style home brew for their husbands. When I first came to Foro, some 60 men were sitting in the shade of a metal-roofed building, drinking and talking. It was midmorning. Women, says Binayo, "never get five seconds to sit down and rest."
On a hot late afternoon I go with her to the river, carrying an empty jerry can. The trail is steep and in places slippery. We scramble down large rocks alongside cacti and thornbushes. After 50 minutes we reach the river—or what is a river at certain times of the year. Now it is a series of black, muddy pools, some barely puddles. The banks and rocks are littered with the excrement of donkeys and cows. There are about 40 people at the river, enough so that Binayo decides that the wait might be shorter upstream. The wait is especially long early in the morning, so Binayo usually makes her first trip before it is light, leaving her son Kumacho, a serious-faced little man who looks even younger than his four years, in charge of his younger brothers.
