问答题Many matters, however, are less easily brought to the test of experience. If, like most of mankind you have strong convictions on many such matters, there are ways in which you can make yourself aware of your own prejudices. If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you subconsciously are aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If someone maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. The most savage controversies are those about matters as to which there is no good evidence either way. So whenever you find yourself getting angry about difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination that your belief is going beyond what the evidence justifies. For those who have enough psychological imagination, it is a good plan to imagine an argument with a person having a different opinion. This has one advantage, and only one, as compared with actual conversation with opponents: this one advantage is that the method is not subject to the same limitations of time and space. Mahatma Gandhi considered it unfortunate to have railways and steamboats and machinery; he would have liked to undo the whole of the industrial revolution. You may never have an opportunity of actually meeting anyone who holds his opinion, because in Western countries most people take the advantage of modern technology for granted. But if you want to make sure that you are right in agreeing with the prevailing opinion, you will find it a good plan to test the arguments that occur to you by considering what Gandhi might have said in refutation of them. I have sometimes been led actually to change my mind as a result of this kind of imaginary dialogue. Furthermore, I have frequently found myself growing more agreeable through realizing the possible reasonableness of a hypothetical opponent.

问答题My idea to change the world for the better is to abolish money. That"s technically very easy and possible already. We have plastic cards on which we can store money. We have Internet bank accounts through which we can make transfers and actually we carry around mobile phones all of us that have smart cards on them that we can transfer money, too. So it"s technologically possible. If we did it, we would be able to do without wallets and purses and that would save us quite a lot of bother. But the larger effects would be transforming the kind of society in which we live, and in particular, making us all more secure and bluntly all more honest. There"s no point in robbing banks or mugging people if they don"t have any money, and right more than that, even things that aren"t for money, crime for money, typically uses money. I"m told there are not many drug dealers that accept credit cards or cheques, for example. Notes: (1)abolish放弃,废除 (2)bluntly直率地,坦白地 (3)mug(俚语)愚弄,欺骗

问答题Now to the last in our week of special reports from Haiti. The earthquake there two months ago created one of the worst disasters in recent history. We"ve heard from kids who lost their family, were badly injured and had their homes and schools destroyed. Even though these children have suffered so much, they still have big hopes for the future. "I want to be a nurse, to help the people who are sick." "Maybe an engineer." "I"d like to be a doctor and a dentist. I"d like to study in the United States." But there are no quick solutions to the problems Haiti has. The country was already poor before the earthquake, now the little that many people did has been destroyed. It will take years to clear the rubble and longer still to rebuild the country. Tanya is working with the charity Save the Children in Haiti. She hopes that all the attention the country has been getting since the quake, will help it become stronger. "This is really a terrible moment for Haiti but it"s also an opportunity in a way, because there"s so much attention and desire to help. It"s a chance for the world to help Haiti build a better education system." Notes: (1)dentist牙医 (2)rubble碎石,瓦砾

问答题One famous scholar says that language is an interesting subject to study on its own right, for the simple reason that everybody uses it every day. It is unbelievable that we know very little about something we are so familiar with. Just a few questions will arouse your interest in language. Why should we call the thing we sit on chair? Can't we call chair table and table chair? How is it that children don't seem to make a big effort in learning their first language while we adults have to work very hard to learn a second language? Why can we talk about yesterday and last year while cats and dogs never seem to make noises about their past experience? Do you think we can think as clearly without language as with language? Does language determine what we think or thought determines what we say? These questions make us curious about language and linguistics can satisfy our curiosity. To seek the answer to any of these questions is a good reason for studying linguistics.
