单选题A dog enthusiast took home two puppies from the dog shelter. He fed one of the puppies super-premium canned dog food, while he fed the other a generic brand from the grocery store. The dog fed on the generic brand gained weight twice as fast as the dog fed the super-premium brand. Because of the difference in these results, the dog enthusiast concluded that the generic brand actually provided nutrition superior to that of the super-premium brand. Each of the following, if true, would weaken the evidence for the dog enthusiast's conclusion except for which of the following? A. A dog will sometimes gain more weight when eating inferior-quality food because he must eat more of it to obtain the nutrients he needs. B. The dogs were of mixed breeds and appeared to be descended from dogs of different sizes. C. Both dogs ate all of the food given to them at each serving. D. The dog enthusiast did not give the two dogs equal amounts of their respective foods. E. The dog who received the super-premium dog food suffered from a digestive system disorder that hindered his growth.

单选题Science is a dominant theme in our culture. Since it touches almost every facet of our life, educated people need at least some acquaintance with its structure and operation. They should also have an understanding of the subculture in which scientists live and the kinds of people they are. An understanding of general characteristics of science as well as specific scientific concepts is easier to attain if one knows something about the things that excite and frustrate the scientist.
This book is written for the intelligent student or lay person whose acquaintance with science is superficial; for the person who has been presented with science as a musty storehouse of dried facts. The book can be used to supplement a course in any science that attempts to provide a better understanding of science. We hope this book will lead readers to a broader perspective on scientific attitudes and a more realistic view of what science is, who scientists are, and what they do. In addition, readers may learn to appreciate the relationship between scientific views and some of the values and philosophies that are pervasive in our culture.
We have tried to present in this book an accurate and up-to-date picture of the scientific community and the people who populate it. That population has in recent years come to comprise more and more women. This increasing role of women in the scientific subculture is not an unique incident but, rather, part of the trend evident in all segments of society as more women enter traditionally male-dominated fields and make significant contributions. In discussing these changes and contribution, however, we are faced with a language that is implicitly sexist, one that uses male nouns or pronouns in referring to unspecified individuals. To offset this built-in bias, we have adopted the policy of using plural nouns and pronouns whenever possible and, when absolutely necessary, alternating he and she. This policy is far from being ideal, but it is at least an acknowledgment of the inadequacy of our language in treating half of the human race equally.
We have also tried to make the book entertaining as well as informative. Our approach is usually informal. We feel, as do many other scientists, that we shouldn"t take ourselves too seriously. As the reader may observe, we see science as a delightful pastime rather than as a grim and dreary way to earn a living.

单选题A simple definition for a social network is the circles of people you know. There are circles of your close friends, others include your family, and yet others are of your acquaintances from church, your job, or community life. The Internet offers yet another opportunity for developing a social network with people who share something in common with you but whose paths you wouldn"t have necessarily crossed because they reside in other states or countries.
Social networking on the Internet took off in popularity several years ago. Now there are over 200 sites where you can make new friends, find a date, exchange photos or make new business connections. At MySpace you can create a private community to share photos and interests with your network of friends or family members. It"s become very popular with the high school and college-aged set, but the number of older adults participating on MySpace is growing rapidly. LinkedIn is a good example of a business networking site where your profile is more like a resume with a focus on work experience and skill sets such as engineering or marketing.
Although many of these social networking sites allow you to add pictures and personal information to attract new friends, it"s very important that you remember to stay safe on the Internet. Like any other public place, you need to be protective of your personal information when you"re visiting sites on the Internet, and there are some bits of personal data that you should not share or have easily accessible on a social website. The obvious information not to publicly reveal is your actual address and phone number. In many cases you may not even want to provide your email address. It"s not wise to fill in any form with your exact birthday, the true city where you were born or your mother"s family name. There are all the types of information used by banks and credit card companies to verify your identify. A clever thief will troll social sites gathering this sort of information in order to steal an identity. So, be mindful when you join a social networking site that not everyone who contacts you is a trustworthy individual.
If you"re interested in giving social networking a try, browse a site you want to join as a "guest" for a while or ask some of your friends what sites they belong to. Fill out only the minimal profile information when you first join. You can always add more data later when you"ve become comfortable with the social interaction you have on that site. Also remember to remove information from your profile when you leave a site to which you don"t intend to return.

单选题The questions in this group are based on the content of a passage. After reading the passage, choose the best answer to each question. Answer all questions following the passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. If you ask a person on the street to name the top predator in the sea, most people would probably say the great white shark. But they would be wrong. A great white shark is a relentless eating machine, superbly designed for its role at the top of the food chain, but the fact is, when a great white shark meets a killer whale, the killer whale has lunch. Not bad for an animal that is neither a whale nor a killer. The killer whale, known to scientists as orcinus orca, is one of the largest, fastest, and most intelligent predators in the world's oceans. The orca is not technically a whale, but rather the largest member of the dolphin family. The name "orca" has become the preferred name for the animal, because the name "killer whale" perpetuates the myth that orcas are dangerous to humans; in fact, there has never been a recorded incident of an orca attacking a human in the wild. This is not to say, however, that orcas are not dangerous to other marine species. Orcas in the wild have been observed consuming an astonishing variety of marine species, including salmon, tuna, sharks, giant squid, penguins, sea lions, dolphins, and even other whales, which the orcas hold under water until they drown. It is thought that the English name "killer whale" came from a mistranslation of the Spanish name asesina de ballenas, or "whale killer." Despite decades of study, many aspects of the creatures' life cycle and habits remain mysteries. Biologists only recently determined that there are, broadly speaking, three separate types of killer whale: residents, transients, and off shores. The residents live in large pods of up to 40 animals and primarily eat fish; these axe the most social of the killer whale types, with each pod having distinctive songs and complex social interactions. Transients are much quieter animals who roam large distances in groups of two to six while hunting marine mammals such as sea lions and dolphins. It is the transients who earned the orca the reputation of being whale killers. The third type of orca is the offshore variety, which rarely ventures toward coasts. These poorly understood animals travel in large groups, are somewhat smaller than their coastal cousins, and are thought to eat fish, sharks, and squid, but probably not other mammals.
