单选题Internet shopping is a new way of shopping.Nowadays, you can shop for just about anything from your armchair. All you need is a computer which is linked to the Internet.Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. In the United States, people spent over $2.5 billion on Internet shopping in 1998.This figure is expected to reach $11 billion by the year 2004. People can shop for a variety of producl s on the Internet.Physical products include items suchas books,CDs,clothes and food. These types of products are the most common purchases through the Internet. You can also buy information products such as on-line news or magazine stories,or you can download computer software through the Internet.Services such as booking airline tickets, reserving hotels or renting cars are also available on the Internet. You can also go shopping on the Internet for entertainment services and take part in on-line games. Internet shopping offers a number of benefits for the shopper. The most important advantage is convenience. You can shop whenever you like as the on-line shops are open 24 hours a day and you don’t have to queue with other shoppers at the check-out counters.Secondly,it is easy to find what you are looking for on the Internet.Even out-of-print books may be ordered on line. Finally,it is often cheaper to buy goods through the Internet, and you can tell the shop exactly what you want. The main disadvantage of Internet shopping is that you cannot actually see the products you are buying or check their quality. Also, many people enjoy shopping in the city and miss the opportunity to talk to friends. Some people are worried about paying for goods using credit cards,so Internet companies are now finding ways to make on-line payment safe. Internet shopping is sure to become more and more popular in the years ahead. It promises to change the way we buy all kinds of things—from tonight’s dinner to a new car.

单选题Never mind the fight to get people to open their wallets in the recession—some companies are taking a different policy, and trying to get customers to open their purses instead. In America, where female consumers make more than 80% of discretionary purchases, companies have started tailoring their products and messages to appeal to women,in an effort to boost their sales. Frito-Lay,a snack-food company owned by PepsiCo,has launched a campaign called“Only In A Woman’s World”to convince women that crisps and popcorn are not just for male,beer-guzzling sport fans.OfficeMax,American second-largest office-supplies company, has redesigned its notebooks and file-holders to appeal to women and has run advertisements that encourage women to make their office more colorful. For the first time,MCDonald’s was a sponsor of New York Fashion Week in February, promoting a new line of hot drinks t0 trendsetting women. Eric Almquist, head of global consumer insights for Bain&Company, says he is surprised it has taken a recession to get companies to focus on women. After all,it is hardly news that they control the vast majority of consumer spending.(They buy 90%of food,55%of consumer electronics, and most of the new cars.)But the recession has prompted companies to rethink their approach. She speaks that helps companies including Citibank and Philips reach women consumers, has tripled its number of clients since the recession began. Some women’s magazines, too, are benefiting as companies that had never before expressed interest in advertising with them are now doing so. Aside from their greater purchasing power, women are valuable customers for three reasons.First, they are loyal, says Marti Barletta, author of Marketing to Women, and more likely to continue to buy a brand if they like it.Second, women are more likely than men to spread information about products they like through word of mouth and social-networking sites.Third, most of the lay-offs so far in America have been in male dominated fields, like manufacturing and construction. This means women may bring home a greater share of household income in the months ahead and have even more buying power. But marketing to women may not work for every company. In particular, for firms(such as some carmakers)with brands that are regarded as strongly male,“gender bending”.or trying to attract the opposite sex, could enhance short-term sales but cause a longer-term decline.Jill Avery of the Simmons School of Management in Boston researched this trend with cars. When Porsche released a sport-utility vehicle designed for women, sales temporarily increased, but men started to move away from the brand,on the basis that it had compromised its masculine image. But in this recession, having a tarnished brand is better than having no brand at all.

单选题Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signed languages are unique—a speech of the hand. They offer a new way to probe how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific controversy: Whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born with, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of one rebel teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the world's only liberal arts university for deaf people. When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something odd: Among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher. Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language(ASL)was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English(混杂英语). But Stokoe believed the "hand talk" his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? It was 1955, when even deaf people dismissed their signing as "substandard". Stokoe's idea was academic heresy(异端邪说). It is 37 years later. Stokoe—now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture—is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades educators fought his idea that signed languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the modulation(调节)of sound. But sign language is based on the movement of hands, the modulation of space. "What I said," Stokoe explains, "is that language is not mouth stuff—it's brain stuff."

单选题From: Paul Rooney <rooneyhoy@speedmail.com> To: Green Mountain Stationery, Inc <pgmountain@qmail.com> I have been purchasing various products through your catalog for many years. For the most part, I've been quite satisfied. However, I recently ordered a case of 1,000 envelopes for my business and am extremely disappointed. First of all, the envelopes I received differ from the description in your catalog. They are supposed to be nine inches long, but the envelopes I received are six inches long. Second, the adhesive on the envelops is defective. I attempted to use a dozen of them. and none of them remained properly sealed. At the very least, I would like a refund for the full cost of these envelopes, along with the shipping charge. The total amount I paid was $34.68. Furthermore, the inspection sticker on the carton states that the product was inspected at your Burlington warehouse. I would like to know how this mistake occurred and request your assurance that this sort of thing will not happen again in the future. Otherwise, I am afraid that I will have to take my business elsewhere. From: Sharon Park <pgreeenmountain@qmail.com> To: Paul Rooney<rooneyhoy@speedmail.com> Dear Mr.Rooney, My name is Sharon Park, and I am the director of quality control at Green Mountain Stationery. Inc. I was recently made aware of your complaint by one of our customer service representatives. I would like to start by apologizing for any inconvenience you may have experience. Our accounting department will issue you a full refund of $34.68 for the defective envelopes. We would also like to offer you a $50 gift certificate that can be used with the purchase of any product in our catalog. I must acknowledge that there have been some problems with inspections in our Burlington warehouse. To deal with this issue, the company has decided that the entire inspecting staff will take part in an intensive re-training program. We will review our procedures to identify anything that needs to be improved. I have forwarded your message to our entire management team, to ensure that this issue will not be overlooked. I am sorry that we have disappointed you, and I sincerely hope you continue to purchase our products. I'm sure this was a one-time incident that will not happen again. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly in the future if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Sharon Park

单选题San Francisco has its cable cars. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day' s coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council. The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge "Nutty Narrows." After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose. It cost $1,000. It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes . The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge. Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.

单选题DOUBTS ON HEALTH BENEFITS'CLAIMS Are health food bars really good for you? A recent analysis by Diet and Health magazine failed to find any benefits in health food bars. In fact many of the most popular bars proved to be positively unhealthy, with high levels of fats, sugar, salt, preservatives, and other chemicals plus an inordinate amount of packaging. Rather than substituting a health bar for your breakfast or lunch, consumers would be well-advised to skip them completely. A balanced diet of freshly-prepared food is still the best, apparently!
