单选题San Francisco has its cable cars. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark.
The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars.
The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over.
One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day' s coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council. The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge "Nutty Narrows."
After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose. It cost $1,000.
It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and
teaching them the ropes
. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world.
In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.
Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.

单选题DOUBTS ON HEALTH BENEFITS'CLAIMS Are health food bars really good for you? A recent analysis by Diet and Health magazine failed to find any benefits in health food bars. In fact many of the most popular bars proved to be positively unhealthy, with high levels of fats, sugar, salt, preservatives, and other chemicals plus an inordinate amount of packaging. Rather than substituting a health bar for your breakfast or lunch, consumers would be well-advised to skip them completely. A balanced diet of freshly-prepared food is still the best, apparently!

The monthly sales staff meeting has been relocated from auditorium 3 to
room 402. Auditorium 3 will be undergoing repairs from April 8-15, which is why
it will be unavailable for your usual meeting on the 10th. Room
402 contains the same audiovisual capabilities as auditorium 3, but its seating
capacity is smaller. It can only fit 65 people comfortably, whereas the
auditorium can do over 100. If this change is unacceptable,
there are two alternatives. First, auditorium 2 is available on the afternoon of
the 10th. It holds as many people as auditorium 3, but it has really outdated
electronic equipment compared to auditorium 3. And second, if the meeting is
rescheduled for after the 15th, the newly refurbished auditorium 3 will be
available to you. Please contact me or another member of the
operations department if you wish to change your current room
reservation. Thank you and have a nice day.

单选题Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1 700,London had no policemen at a11.A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid. About 300 years ago,London was starting to get bigger and more and more people began to live there. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes as much as possible. In 1750,Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called“Bow Street Runners”because they worked near Bow Street. Fifty years later, there were 120“Bow Street Runners”,but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So in 1829,the first Metropolitan(or London)Police Force was started with 3,000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses.Until 1 920 all the police in London were men. Today, the London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses, the pay is even better than for the others.
单选题Young adult filmmakers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young filmmakers who aren't in film school yet and aren't, strictly speaking, even adults? They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Films Festival, tomorrow, in a setting any director might envy: Lincoln Center. Complete with "red carpet" interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced moviemakers, except for the age of the participants: about 8 to 18. "What's really exciting is that it's film for kids by kids," said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts, a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington, Virginia. "We want to make this a national event," Ms. Gardner added. The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B. King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005. "A lot of the material is really mature," Ms. Gardner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project, a media arts and leadership-training group. "The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of secondhand smoke. " Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants" feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country. The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and full-length film whose title is Pressures.
单选题My father was chief engineer of a merchant ship, which was sunk in Word War II, The book Night of the U-boats told the story. Memories In September, 1940, my mother, sister and I went to Swansea, where my father's ship was getting ready to sail. We brought him a family photograph to be kept with him at all times and keep him safe. Then I remember my mother lying face down, sobbing. She had heard from a friend that the ship had been sunk by a torpedo(鱼雷). I can remember the arrival of the telegram(电报), which in those days always brought bad news. My grandmother opened it. It read, "Safe. Love Ted." My most vivid memory is being woken and brought down to sit on my father's knee, his arm in a bandage. He was judged unfit to return to sea and took a shore job in Glasgow for the rest of the war. For as long as I can remember, he had a weak heart. Mother said it was caused by the torpedoes. He said it was because of the cigarettes, whichever, he died suddenly in his early 50s. Ten years later I read Night of the U-bouts and was able to complete the story. Torpedo One torpedo struck the ship; Father was in the engine room, where the third engineer was killed. He shut down the engines to slow the ship making it easier for it to be abandoned. By the time he got on desk(甲板)he was alone. Every lifeboat was gone except one which had stuck fast. When he tried to cut it free, it swung against the ship, injuring his hand and arm. He had no choice but to jump—still with the photograph in his pocket. Three days later, he and other survivors were safe in Glasgow. All 23 with him signed the back of the photograph. A Toast In my room is the book and the photograph. Often, glass in hand; I have wondered how I would have dealt with an explosion, a sinking ship, a jump into a vast ocean and a wait for rescue? Lest(以免)we forget, I have some more whisky and toast the heroes of the war.
