单选题It is said that in England death is pressing, in Canada inevitable and in California optional. Small wonder. Americans' life expectancy has nearly doubled over the past century. Failing hips can be replaced, clinical depression controlled, cataracts removed in a 30-minute surgical procedure. Such advances offer the aging population a quality of life that was unimaginable when I entered medicine 50 years ago. But not even a great health-care system can cure death—and our failure to confront that reality now threatens this greatness of ours. Death is normal; we are genetically programmed to disintegrate and perish, even under ideal conditions. We all understand that at some level, yet as medical consumers we treat death as a problem to be solved. Shielded by third-party payers from the cost of our care we demand everything that can possibly be done for us, even if it's useless. The most obvious example is latestage cancer care. Physicians—frustrated by their inability to cure the disease and fearing loss of hope in the patient—too often offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justified. In 1950, the U. S. spent $12.7 billion on health care. In 2002, the cost will be $1,540 billion. Anyone can see this trend is unsustainable. Yet few seem willing to try to reverse it. Some scholars conclude that a government with finite resources should simply stop paying for medical care that sustains life beyond a certain age—say 83 or so. Former Colorado governor Richard Lamm has been quoted as saying that the old and infirm "have a duty to die and get out of the way" so that younger, healthier people can realize their potential. I would not go that far. Energetic people now routinely work through their 60s and beyond, and remain dazzlingly productive. At 78 Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone jokingly claims to be 53. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is in her 70s, and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop chairs an Internet start-up in his 80s. These leaders are living proof that prevention works and that we can manage the health problems that come naturally with age. As a mere 68-year-old, I wish to age as productively as they have. Yet there are limits to what a society can spend in this pursuit. As a physician, I know the most costly and dramatic measures may be ineffective and painful. I also know that people in Japan and Sweden, countries that spend far less on medical care, have achieved longer, healthier lives than we have. As a nation we may be overfunding the quest for unlikely cures while underfunding research on humbler therapies that could improve people's lives.

The rich have traditionally passed their wealth on
to their children. But an increasing number of billionaires are choosing not to.
The reason? They want their children to live on themselves — and not to turn
into spoiled successors. Nicola Horlick or "superwoman", a
famous British billionaire, owing to the fact that she has high-flying jobs and
five kids — has spent her career making a report £250m. She now seems determined
to throw off large parts of it. She already gives away about 25% of her income
each year; she has just revealed, in a report on the state of charity in the
city, that she will not be leaving most of the remainder to her children.
"I think it is wrong to give too much inherited wealth to children,"
Horlick told the report's authors. "I will not be leaving all my wealth to
my children because that would just ruin their lives. " She is
by no means the first to go public with this convition. Bill Gates has put an
estimated $ 30bil into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This was
supplemented, in 2009, by another $ 24bil also from his friend Warren
Buffett. Buffett has always been colorful, quotably clear on
where he stands. His daughter often tells a story of finding herself without
change for a car parking ticket — her father lent her $ 20, then promptly made
her write him a check. "To suggest that the children of the wealthy should be
just as wealthy," he has said, "is like saying the members of America's 2004
Olympic team should be made up only of the children of the 1980 Olympic team.
" Antia Roddick, the late founder fo the Body Shop, told her
kids that they would not inherit one penny. The money that she made from the
company would go into the Body Shop Foundation, which isn't one of those awful
tax shelters, like some in America. It just functions to take the money and give
it away.

问答题Anthropology is one of the social sciences. Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry which seeks to study humans and their endeavors in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassionate manner that natural scientists use for the study of natural phenomena. Each of these social sciences has a subfield or specialization which lies particularly close to anthropology.
单选题Watch a baby between six and nine months old, and you will observe the basic concepts of geometry being learned. Once the baby has mastered the idea that space is three-dimensional, it reached out and begins grasping various kinds of objects. It is then, from perhaps nine to fifteen months, that the concepts of sets and numbers are formed. So far, so good. But now an ominous development takes place. The nerve fibers in the brain insulate themselves in such a way that the baby begins to hear sounds very precisely. Soon it picks up language, and it is then brought into direct communication with adults. From this point on, it is usually downhill all the way for mathematics, because the child now becomes exposed to all the nonsense words and beliefs of the community into which it has been so unfortunate as to have been born. Nature having done very well by the child to this point, having permitted it the luxury of thinking for itself for eighteen months, now abandons it to the arbitrary conventions and beliefs of society. But at least the child knows something of geometry and numbers, and it will always retain some memory of the early happy days, no matter what vicissitudes it may suffer later on. The main reservoir of mathematical talent in any society is thus possessed by children who are about two years old, children who have just learned to speak fluently.
单选题In country after country, talk of nonsmoker's right is in the air. While a majority of countries have taken little (51) no action yet, some 30 nations have introduced legislated steps to control smoking. 单选题Historians tend to tell the same joke when they are describing history education in America. It's the one (51) the teacher standing in the schoolroom door (52) goodbye to students for the summer and calling after them. "By the way, we won World War Ⅱ. " The problem with the joke, of course, is that it's not funny. The recent surveys on (53) illiteracy are beginning to numb: nearly one third of American 17-year-olds cannot even (54) which countries the United States fought against in that war. One third have no idea when the Declaration of Independence was (55) . One third thought Columbus reached the New World after 1750. 单选题For good or ill, globalization has become the economic buzz-word of the 1990s. National economies are undoubtedly becoming steadily more integrated as cross-border flows of trade, investment and financial capital increase. Consumers are buying more foreign goods, a growing number of firms now operate across national borders, and savers are investing more than ever before in far-flung places. Whether all of this is for good or ill is a topic of heated debate. One positive view is that globalization is an unmixed blessing, with the potential to boost productivity and living standards everywhere. This is because a globally integrated economy can lead to a better division of labor between countries, allowing low-wage countries to specialize in labor-intensive tasks while highwage countries use workers in more productive ways. It will allow firms to exploit bigger economies of scale. And with globalization, capital can be shifted to whatever country offers the most productive investment opportunities, not trapped at home financing projects with poor returns. Critics of globalization take a gloomier view. They predict that increased competition from low-wage developing countries will destroy jobs and push down wages in today's rich economies. There will be a race to the bottom as countries reduce wages, taxes, welfare benefits and environmental controls to make themselves more competitive. Pressure to compete will erode the ability of governments to set their own economic policies. The critic also worry about the increased power of financial markets to cause economic havoc, as in the European currency crises of 1992 and 1993, Mexico in 1994~1995 and South-East Asia in 1997.

问答题The generation gap is so great in Hong Kong that the teenagers there rarely turn to their parents or teachers for advice on anything. Whether it be sex, AIDS, school worries or family problems, adults are not considered up to the job. Until now, no one has asked Hong Kong youth, "What do you think?" Some understanding of the emotions of Hong Kong's youth, however, has come from the work of Dr. Jeffrey Days-at the University of Hong Kong. His survey of young people does not focus, for example, on how many drugs they take—but tries to answer the question why. Dr. Day hopes the results, which he plans to explain in full next week, will reveal what troubles—as well as pleases—today's high-school students. Conclusions will be passed on not only to government departments but back to the schools which took part.

问答题The old lady had always been proud of the great rose-tree in her garden, and was fond of telling how it had grown from a cutting she had brought years before from Italy, when she was first married. She and her husband had been travelling back in their carriage from Rome (it was before the time of railways) and on a bad piece of road south of Siena they had broken down, and had been forced to pass the night in a little house by the road-side. The accommodation was wretched of course; she had spent a sleepless night, and rising early had stood, wrapped up, at her window, with the cool air blowing on her face, to watch the dawn. She could still, after all these years, remember the blue mountains with the bright moon above them, and how a far-off town on one of the peaks had gradually grown whiter and whiter, till the moon faded, the mountains were touched with the pink of the rising sun, and suddenly the town was lit as by an illumination, one window after another catching and reflecting the sun's beam, till at last the whole little city twinkled and sparkled up in the sky like a nest of stars.

Negative daydreamers tend to dwell on life"s darker side imagining dangerous and/or life threatening situations, such as the appearance of a fatal or weakening disease or becoming a victim of violence.

问答题A good book is often the best urn (瓮) of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man"s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters. "They are never alone," said Sir Philip Sidney, "that are accompanied by noble thoughts."
Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
The great and good do not die even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.

问答题Traditionally, the woman has held a low position in a marriage partnerships. While her husband went his way she had to wash, stitch and sew. Today the move is to liberate the woman, which may in the end strengthen the marriage union. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to friendship in marriage is the amount a couple usually see of each other. Friendship in its usual sense is not tested by the strain of daily, yearlong cohabitation. Couples need to take up separate interests (and friendship) as well as mutually shared ones, if they are not to get used to the more attractive elements of each other's personalities. Married couples are likely to exert themselves for guests—being amusing, discussing with passion and point—and then to fall into dull exhausted silence when the guests have gone. Once a man confessed, "The great question I have not been able to answer is 'What does a woman want?'" Many husbands wonder the same thing today.

The present national and international news, stories of human interest, and reports on new books, movies, plays, sports events, fashions, foods and so on are included. The articles are written in an informal style, and they are illustrated with photographs. More than nine million people read newsmagazines regularly. Two picture magazines Life and Look enjoyed popularity for many years. They presented the news with simple texts and many photographs, and they remained among the most widely read magazines until the late 1960s. Some people think these picture magazines were forced out of business because they could not compete successfully with the live pictures on televised news programs. Today there are approximately 1 750 daily newspapers, with a total circulation of over 62 million and more than 580 Sunday papers, with a circulation of almost 60 million.

单选题______, the great Mississippi rolls its mile-wide tide along, shining in the sun.
问答题Each year in the United States more people are killed or injured in accidents—at home, at work or school, at play, or while traveling—than were killed or injured in the Vietnam War. In the early 1990s, about half of these accidental deaths were the result of motor-vehicle accidents. Other major causes of accidental deaths were falls, fires, and poisoning. On a worldwide basis, accidents involving motor-vehicles are the primary causes of accidental deaths, followed by accidents in industry and in the home. Efforts to lessen or to eliminate the hazardous conditions that cause accidents are known as safety measures. Safety is a growing concern around the world, and safety skills are being taken more seriously today than ever before. People have come to realize that safety skills can be learned, and most safety experts agree that it is possible to predict, and take steps to prevent the majority of accidents. Few accidents simply "happen". Most are caused by ignorance, carelessness, neglect, or lack of skill.

Take time to read your list of goals. Read the list one goal at a time. Close your eyes and picture each goal as if it were already accomplished. Take a few more seconds to feel what you would feel if you had already accomplished each goal.
问答题A recent research suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have created a world in which exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity.
In all, the researchers were able to pool data from 122 countries, covering 89% of the world"s population. They considered sufficient physical activity to be 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, or 20 minutes of intense exercise three days a week, or some combination of the two.
Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Finland and Iraq, for example, move more than their male countrymen.
问答题The standardized educational or psychological tests are widely used to aid in selecting, classifying, assigning, or promoting students, employees and military personnel. But they have been the target of recent attacks in books, magazines, and even in Congress. The target is wrong, for in attacking the tests, critics divert attention from the fault that lies with ill-informed or incompetent users. The tests themselves are merely tools, with characteristics that can be measured with reasonable precision under specified conditions. Whether the results will be valuable, meaningless, or even misleading depends partly upon the tools themselves but largely upon the user.

Or, one may speak the same language, but in such a way that one's antecedents are revealed, or (one hopes) hidden.

问答题One might ask why speculation is permitted when there is so real a danger of loss. The basic reason is that speculation can perform useful functions in the market equilibrium and encourages faster entry of more suppliers. If the price change lagged until after an actual commodity shortage had occurred, the fluctuation would probably be sharper and more sudden. Remedial supply action could not be further delayed. Similarly, if speculators foresee a surplus in some commodity, their selling of futures will help drive the price down to some extent before the surplus actually occurs. When speculators foresee a shortage and bid up the price, they are also helping to conserve the present supply.
问答题For most of human history, the dominant concerns about energy have centered on the benefit side. Inadequacy of energy resources of the technologies for harvesting, converting, and distributing those resources has meant insufficient energy benefits to human beings and hence inconvenience, and constraints on its growth. The 1970's, then, represented an turning point. Energy was seen to be getting costlier in all respects. It began to be believable that excessive energy costs could pose threats on a par with those of insufficient supply. It also became possible to think that expanding some forms of energy supply could create costs exceeding the benefits.

问答题The surrogate students are only the latest symptom of an epidemic of corruption that has gripped the Russian higher education system. A report published this week by the Ministry of Education and Moscow's Higher School of Economics (HSE) showed that more than $ 300m was paid in bribes to enter the country's educational establishments last year. A direct bribe to lecturers to enter an institution can be up to $ 30 000 for a top law faculty, the HSE estimates.
"In our school alone this spring we caught four impostors who were attempting to sit the entrance tests in place of others," said Grigory Kantorovich, deputy head of the HSE. "Those were not isolated cases; it's a whole, specialised business."
Such corruption is multiplied by a burgeoning market in coursework and diplomas written by teachers and lecturers, which can be bought over the Internet.
A police spokesman said there was no dedicated unit for tackling corruption in education, but individual cases were investigated if evidence was handed over.
问答题We are now in an inter-disciplinary integration era, the pervasion and cooperation among disciplines has become a general trend for the development of science. We wouldn't have today's advanced computer graphics systems if mathematician hadn't been able to solve problems related to surface geometric. We wouldn't have networks capable of handling massive amounts of data if physicists and astronomers hadn't continuously forged tools to look more deeply into subatomic structures and the cosmos. Chemists' efforts to simulate complex phenomtna and predict the properties of many-electron systems have inspired massively parallel architectures for computing. And the information made available by the sequencing of the human genome has caused us to rethink how to store, manipulate, and retrieve data most effectively. It will take new insights from studies of human cognition, linguistics, neurobiology, computing, and more to develop systems that truly augment our capacity to learn and create.
问答题One of the chief concerns of wildlife management is the protection and improvement of the natural habitat so that animals have enough food and water to survive. Wildlife management involves care of the soil to produce good vegetation, it also involves care of plants, not only as a source of food, but also as protection. Animals need cover to hide from their natural enemies and to raise their young safely. Just as crops are harvested, wildlife too must sometimes be "harvested" . By allowing limited hunting, good management can control certain species that threaten to overpopulate their habitat.

问答题The news of the first successful cloning of a sheep has sent shock waves around the world. As a result, in many countries, officials and even some scientists are calling for new or strengthened legislation to outlaw human cloning, although at this early date, no concrete measures have been proposed. In the United States, which currently has no law prohibiting the procedure, President Clinton announced an urgent inquiry into the potential ethical and legal implications by the National Bioethics Advisory Commission, which will report its conclusions by the end of May. Meanwhile, Clinton has banned federal funding for human cloning research and asked for a moratorium on nonfederally funded efforts. In addition, both houses of the U. S. Congress had held holding hearings on the issue. Scientists have cloned embryos for the first time from patients with serious diseases and injuries. It is believed that the day will come when some of mankind's most destructive diseases and injuries can be effectively treated through the use of therapeutic stem cells.
问答题Power, like vanity, is not satisfiable. Nothing could satisfy it completely. And it is, indeed, by far the strongest motive in the lives of important men. Love of power is greatly increased by the experience of power, and this applies to petty power as well as to that of those in power. In any autocratic regime, the holders of power become increasingly tyrannical with experience of the delights that power can afford. Since power over human beings is shown in making them do what they would rather not do, the man who is actuated by love of power is more apt to inflict pain than to permit pleasure. If you ask your boss for leave of absence from the office on some legitimate occasion, his love of power will derive more satisfaction from refusal than from consent. If you require a building permit, the petty official concerned will obviously get more pleasure from saying "No" than from saying "Yes". It is this sort of thing which makes the love of power such a dangerous motive.

问答题For years, the prescription for maintaining health hearts had been vigorous exercise—running, swimming, dancing—whatever it took to get the heat rate up and keep it there for 20 to 30 minutes at least three times a week. But that message changed.
A panel of exercise researchers convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Sports Medicine reported that people needn't exercise vigorously to improve their health.
The American Heart Association has weighed in with similar recommendations. But despite this apparent consensus, there is considerable disagreement in the exercise research community about whether the recommendations are amply supported by scientific data.
Policy-makers caught in the middle of this disagreement are in a difficult position. It's a classic dilemma confronting health experts in areas ranging from mammography (哺乳动物学) to diet, where the scientific data are not clear-cut.

问答题Technology trends may push Silicon Valley back to the future. Carver Mead, a pioneer in integrated circuits and a professor of computer science at the California Institute of Technology, notes there are now work stations that enable engineers to design, test and produce chips right on their desks, much the way as editor creates a newsletter on a Macintosh. As the time and cost of making a chip drop to a few days and a few hundred dollars, engineers may soon be free to let their imagination soar without being penalized by expensive failures. Mead predicts that inventors will be able to perfect powerful customized chips over a weekend at the office — spawning a new generation of garage starts-ups and giving the US a jump on its foreign rivals in getting new products to market fast. "We've got more garages with smart people. " Mead observes, "We really thrive on anarchy. "
问答题Physicists all over the world, back in 1895, were pretty much agreed that the great work of physics had all been done. Some of them mourned publicly that no discoveries of truly major importance were likely to be made in the future. But then they did not know that a Professor Roentgen, working alone in a modest laboratory in Germany, had begun a series of experiments with a crude induction coil, a pear-shaped bulb from which the air had been removed, and a sheet of paper painted with certain metallic salts. And professor Roentgen did not know that his work was destined to reveal a force of nature—never before suspected—that would almost overnight revolutionize medicine and technology, and become a instrument for deeper probing of the structure of matter.
问答题I am lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when for the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out.
Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants, perhaps, and looking again at each one as though it were a person, by feeding the two cats, by cooking a meal.

问答题One of the keys to speaking English like a native is the ability to use and understand casual expression, or idioms. American English is full of idioms. You won't learn these expressions in a standard textbook. But you will hear them all the time in everyday conversations. You'll also meet them in books, newspapers, magazines, and TV shows. Idioms add color to the language. Master idioms and your speech will be less awkward, less foreign. You'll also understand more of what you read and hear. Often a student of English tries to translation idioms word-for-word, or literally. If you do this, you can end up asking, "What could this possibly mean?" This is why idioms are difficult: they work as groups of words, not as individual words. If you translate each word on its own, you'll miss the meaning and in many cases end up with nonsense.
问答题Our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and no expense to preserve life. But we are too often indifferent to the loss of an hour or of a day, forgetting that our life is the sum total of the days and of the hours we live. A day or an hour wasted is therefore so much life forfeited. Our life is a brief span measuring some seventy or eighty years in all. But nearly one third of this has to be spent in sleep; some years have to be spent over our meals; some in making journeys on land and voyages by sea; some in merrymaking; some in watching over the sickbeds of our nearest and dearest relatives. Now if all these years were to be reduced from the term over which our life extends, we shall find about twenty or thirty years at our disposal for active work. Whoever remembers this can never willingly waste a single moment of his life.
问答题Since 1981, farmers in Holland have been encouraged to adopt "green" farming techniques that were thought to benefit plant and bird life. Farmers who have voluntarily adopted these measures are compensated by the European Union. The goal of the program is to work against the negative effects of modern farming, such as declines in species diversity and the disturbance of local nesting grounds.
The "green" methods of farming cost the European Union about 1.7 billion Euros annually. This is about 4 percent of the budget for "Common Agricultural Policy," and the compensation is expected to rise to 10 percent within the next few years.
Various forms of "green farming" employed around the world have proved successful, and all new methods thought to be environmentally sensitive should be subject to sound scientific evaluation to determine whether they are actually meeting the intended goals.
问答题Directions: You are to write in no less than 120 words about the title "Making Our Lives Environmental-Friendly" You should base your composition on the outline given below:
1)Necessity to change our lives to make it environmental-friendly.
2)How to do.
3)You conclusion.
问答题George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four was far more prescient than any person realized who grew up in the middle decades of the 20th century. It was centered on the very special technology (information technology, as we call it now) that would in fact emerge and shape the world over the next two generations: central to the success of the vast, totalitarian empire was called the telescreen, a wall-sized panel display that could simultaneously send and receive images from each individual household to a hovering Big Brother. The telescreen was what permitted the vast centralization of social lift, for it allowed the government to banish privacy by motoring every word and deed over a massive network of wires.

问答题Is it the sole aim of most Americans to make money and possess luxuries which could be called excessive? The majority of Americans would certainly deny this, though most feel proud to amass wealth and possessions through hard work. In the USA, about 90% of the population is well enough off to expect a brighter future. The USA still has one of the highest standards of living in the world, although, at the present times, 10% are below what the Government considered to be below the "poverty level. " While these under-privileged people receive help from the Government, they have no high hopes for their future. It is from this "underclass," and those who take advantage of it, that most of the violence springs—the violence, which is one of the least pleasant aspects of American society. Some believe that the only guarantee of security is wealth, and the only way out for the poor is to get money.
问答题I stopped to let the car cool off and to study the map. I had expected to be near my objective by now, but everything still seemed alien to me. I was only five when my father had taken me abroad, and that was eighteen years ago. When my mother had died after a tragic accident, he did not quickly recover from the shock and loneliness. Everything around him was full of her presence, continually reopening the wound. So he decided to emigrate. In the new country he became absorbed in making a new life for the two of us, so that he gradually ceased to grieve. He did not marry again and I was brought up without a mother's care, but I lacked for nothing, for he was both father and mother to me. He always meant to go back one day, but not to stay. His roots and mine had become too firmly embedded in the new land.

问答题Stock market Can bring a fortune to people. However, it can also take away everything from you overnight. Many individuals think of investing in the stock market as being similar to gambling. When they think of the stock market this way, they miss one big point: A gambler has a negative expected return, while an investor has a positive expected return. Over time, the more money that an individual gambles at a casino, the more money she will lose. In investing, the more money that an individual commits to long-term investing, the more money that the individual will make because the odds are on the side of the investor. Historically, stocks have returned about 10 percent before taxes. People who view the stock market like a casino tend to act like spectators, trading in and out of stocks every few months, or in extreme cases, every few days.

问答题Few would question the positive impact technology has had on education. E-mail, the Internet, and software programs have sped up the pace of work, connected students to experts worldwide, and brought libraries right to the doorstep. A 1999 survey showed that more than 25 million children ages 2 to 17 are online, a number that has tripled since 1997. Of those, more than 70 percent of teens use the Web regularly. But with the surge of information comes a greater burden on teens to manage time. Unlike their parents, who typically had to take more initiative to create interruptions from homework, many teens are finding technology floods them with ways to lose concentration.

问答题These collective changes in the content, character, and execution of China's foreign policy over the past ten years represent an important evolution from Beijing's narrow and reactive approach to global affairs in the 1980s and early 1990s. Yet potentially even more significant changes are now taking place.
Within the last three years, and especially since September 11, 2001, the writings of Chinese strategists have begun to reflect a critical shift in their view of the international system and China's role in it. For example, provocative articles have recently run in major Chinese newspapers and journals advocating that China abandon its long-held victim mentality. The writers reject the persistent emphasis on China's "150 years of shame and humiliation" as the main lens through which Chinese view their place in modern international affairs. Influential Chinese analysts have begun to promote instead China's adoption of a "great-power mentality. " This emerging notion would replace Chinese victimhood with a confidence born of two decades of impressive economic growth.

问答题We all know that the most powerful force in our fives is love. In addition to providing us with soul-warming companionship, the emotion of love is truly inspiring.
Of course, the facts of our lives tell a somewhat sad story. We have a very hard time making love last. The divorce rate in the U.S. is still around 50 percent. That figure doesn"t even cover the many couples that live together without marriage and whose unions are even more likely to dissolve.
Relationships fail because people have the misconception about what to expect in marriage. The fantasy is that everything will be wonderful as long as you find the perfect person-your missing half. But marriage is a team sport. It"s one team with two people, with two different minds. The difficulty is that these two people disagree all the time. They need to know nondestructive ways of expressing differences and must also be prepared for the inevitable disappointments that come from living with another person.
On a worldwide basis, accidents involving motor vehicles are the primary cause of accidental deaths, followed by accidents in industry and in the home. Efforts to lessen or to eliminate the hazardous conditions that cause accidents are known as safety measures. Safety is a growing concern around the world, and safety skills fire being taken more seriously today than ever before People have Come to realize that safety skills can be learned, and most safety experts agree that it is possible to predict, and take steps to prevent, the majority of accidents. Few accidents simply "happen". Most are caused by ignorance, carelessness, neglect, or lack of skill.

问答题China's active participation in international institutions creates more chances to bring cooperation on key issues. Moreover, China now brings more resources and influence to the table. Beijing's lead role in addressing the Korean nuclear crisis is one such example. American leaders should encourage the expansion of such cooperation to other security problems, in order to manage mutual threat perceptions and build trust on both sides. Such efforts will be critical to stabilizing a bilateral relationship most noted for its ups and downs.
For the next two decades, China's primary focus will remain internal, on its numerous domestic problems. After all, the continued economic and political modernization of the world's most populous country is no small task. China's top political leaders have deemed the next 20 years a strategic opportunity to develop their country. But an opening exists for the international community as well, and U. S. policymakers should use it wisely, to address the challenges and opportunities created by China's rise.
问答题The generation gap is so great in Hong Kong that the teenagers there rarely turn to their parents or teachers for advice on anything. Whether it be sex, AIDS, school worries or family problems, adults are not considered up to the job.
Until now, no one has asked Hong Kong youth, "What do you think?" Some understanding of the emotions of Hong Kong"s youth, however, has come from the work of Dr. Jeffrey Day—at the University of Hong Kong. His survey of young people does not focus, for example, on how many drugs they take—but tries to answer the question why.
Dr. Day hopes the results, which he plans to explain in full next week, will reveal what troubles—as well as pleases—today"s high-school students. Conclusions will be passed on not only to government departments but back to the schools which took part.

问答题It is not easy to talk about the role of the mass media in this overwhelmingly significant phase in European history. History and news become confused, and one"s impressions tend to be a mixture of skepticism and optimism. Television is one of the means by which these feelings are created and conveyed—and perhaps never before has it served so much to connect different peoples and nations as in the recent events in Europe. The Europe that is now forming cannot be anything other than its peoples, their cultures and national identities. With this in mind we can begin to analyze the European television scene. In Europe, as elsewhere, multi-media groups have been increasingly successful: groups which bring together television, radio, newspapers, magazines and publishing houses that work in relation to one another.

Chemists' efforts to simulate complex phenomena and predict the properties of many-electron systems have inspired massively parallel architectures for computing. And the information made available by the sequencing of the human genome has caused us to rethink how to store, manipulate, and retrieve data most effectively. It will take new insights from studies of human cognition, linguistics, neurobiology, computing, and more to develop systems that truly augment our capacity to learn and create.

问答题The heads of some of Russia's most prestigious educational establishments yesterday admitted that students use surrogates (代理人) to gain entry to top institutes, whose qualifications are a passport to lucrative jobs. The surrogate students are only the latest symptom of an epidemic of corruption that has gripped the Russian higher education system. A report published this week by the Ministry of Education and Moscow's Higher School of Economics (HSE) showed that more than $300m was paid in bribes to enter the country's educational establishments last year. A direct bribe to lecturers to enter an institution can be up to $30000 for a top law faculty, the HSE estimates. "In our school alone this spring we caught four impostors who were attempting to sit the entrance tests in place of others, " said Grigory Kantorovich, deputy head of the HSE. "Those were not isolated cases; it's a whole, specialised business. " Such corruption is multiplied by a burgeoning market in coursework and diplomas written by teachers and lecturers, which can be bought over the Internet. A police spokesman said there was no dedicated unit for tackling corruption in education, but individual cases were investigated if evidence was handed over.

Proper arrangement of classroom space is important to encouraging interaction. Most of us have noticed how important physical setting is to efficiency and comfort in our work. College classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking. We may be approaching the twenty-first century, but step into almost any college classroom and you step back in time at least a hundred years. Desks are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher but not all their classmates. The assumption behind such an arrangement is obvious. Everything of importance comes from the teacher.
With a little imagination and effort, unless desks are fixed to the floor, the teacher can correct this situation and create space that encourages interchange among students. In small or standard-size classes, chairs, desks, and tables can be arranged in a variety of ways. The primary goal should be for everyone to be able to see everyone else. Larger classes, particularly those held in lecture halls, unfortunately, allow much less flexibility.
Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Even in large lecture halls, it is possible for students to turn around and form groups of four to six. Breaking a class into small groups provides more opportunities for students to interact with each other, think out loud, and see how other students" thinking processes operate all essential elements in developing new modes of critical thinking. In courses that regularly use a small group format, students might be asked to stay in the Same small groups throughout the course. A colleague of mine, John, allows students to move around during the first two weeks, until they find a group they are comfortable with. John then asks them to stay in the same seat, with the same group, from that time on. This not only creates a comfortable setting for interaction but helps him learn students" names and faces.

翻译题The office desk, as we know it, may have had its day. A large study on the future of work in the UK predicts the rise of the “mobile worker” moving with notebook computer and mobile phone between office, home, hotel, airport or highway service station as the needs of a job demand. Today, more than five million people already spend some time working at home or on the move, according to a recent report. That number will rise dramatically over the coming decades, with mobile work becoming one of the fastest-growing types of employment.
According to the study “Working in the Twenty-First Century”, individuals will not necessarily see themselves as working from home. They could equally be working from the office, but they will be one the move from place to place, working at various times of the say, for much of the week. For a large proportion of workers, work in twenty years’ time will be more about movement than staying in one place.
翻译题A good book is often the best urn (瓮) of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man''s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.

The writers reject the persistent emphasis on China's 66150 years of shame and humiliation" as the main lens through which Chinese view their place in modern international affairs. Influential Chinese analysts have begun to promote instead China's adoption of a "great-power mentality. " This emerging notion would replace Chinese victimhood with a confidence born of two decades of impressive economic growth.
翻译题We all know that the most powerful force in our lives is love. In addition to providing us with soul-warming companionship, the emotion of love is truly inspiring.
Of course, the facts of our lives tell a somewhat sad story. We have a very hard time making love last. The divorce rate in the U.S. is still around 50 percent. That figure doesn’t even cover the many couples that live together without marriage and whose unions are even more likely to dissolve.
Relationships fail because people have the misconception about what to expect in marriage. The fantasy is that everything will be wonderful as long as you find the perfect person –your missing half . But marriage is a team sport . It’s one team with two people , with two different minds . The difficulty is that these two people disagree all the time . They need to know nondestructive ways of expressing differences and must also be prepared for the inevitable disappointments that come from living with another person.

翻译题Many individuals think of investing in the stock market as being similar to gambling. Historically, stocks have returned about 10 per year before taxes. People who view the stock market like a casino tend to act like spectators, trading in and out of stocks every few months, or in extreme cases, every few days.

问答题Human friends may come and go, but a horse could be one of your most loyal, long-term friends if you treat it fight.
Horses understand words better than expected, since horses can hear the human voice better than even dogs can, due to their particular range of hearing. And scientists predict that trainers could have greater success if they use more verbal commands in their horse training programs.
Horses possess excellent memories, which allow horses to not only recall their human friends after a long period of separation but also to remember some complex human instructions for ten years or more. The bonds with humans are likely an extension of horse behavior in the wild, since horses value their own horse relatives and friends, and are also open to new, nonthreatening acquaintances. Horses maintain long-term bonds with several members of their family group, but they also interact temporarily with members of other groups when forming herds.
问答题The Renaissance embraced, first of all, an impressive record of new achievements in art, literature, science, philosophy, education and religion. Although the foundation of many of these was classical, they soon expanded beyond the measure of Greek and Roman influence. Indeed, many of the achievements in painting, science, politics and religion bore little relation to the classical heritage. Secondly, the Renaissance incorporated a number of dominant ideas and attitudes that gave it the impress of a unique society. Notable among these in general were optimism, and individualism; but the most significant of them all was humanism.

问答题Recent developments in astronomy have made is possible to detect planets in our own Milky Way and in other galaxies. This is a major achievement because, in relative terms, planets are very small and do not emit light. Finding planets is proving hard enough, but finding life on Earth will prove infinitely more difficult. The first question to answer is whether a planet can actually support life. In our own solar system, for example, Venus is far too hot and Mars is far too cold to support life. Only the Earth provides ideal conditions, and even here it has taken more than four billion years for plant and animal life to evolve. Whether a planet can support life depends on the size and brightness of its star, that is its "sun". Imagine a star up to twenty times larger, brighter and hotter than our own sun. A planet would have to be a very long way from it to be capable of supporting life.

He did not marry again and I was brought up without a mother"s care, but I lacked for nothing, for he was both father and mother to me. He always meant to go back one day, but not to stay. His roots and mine had become too firmly embedded in the new land.

问答题Concern for family values is reducing among younger Japanese as they pursue an inner world of private satisfaction. Data collected by the Japanese government in 1993 show that only 23% of Japanese youth are thinking about supporting their aged parents, in contrast to 63% of young Americans. It appears that many younger-generation Japanese are losing both respect for their parents and a sense of responsibility to the family. Experts attribute the change to Japanese parents' over-spoiling of their children, material plentifulness, and growing concern for private matters. The shift toward individualism among Japanese is most striking among the very young. According to data provided in 1991, 50% of Japanese youth aged 16 to 19 can be labeled "self-centered", compared with 33% among those aged 25 to 29. To earn the label, the young people responded positively to such ideas as "I would like to make decisions without considering traditional values" and "I don't want to do anything I can't enjoy doing".

问答题If the Harry Potter books stand as the essential popular reading for young people, then The Da Vinci Code has captured the crown for grown-ups. With its controversial mix of storytelling and reasoning, the novel remains high on best-seller lists even as it begins its third year since publication.
Twenty-five million books, in 44 languages, are in print worldwide and no end is in sight. Booksellers expect The Da Vinci Code to remain a best-seller well into 2005.
The unusual success of The Da Vinci Code has been helped by wide access, with the book on sale everywhere from Wal-Mart to airports to supermarkets.
The Da Vinci Code has also thrived during a time when both literary and commercial novels struggled, when a tight economy, competition from other media and election-year tensions drove the public to nonfiction works or away from books altogether. Publishers and booksellers say Brown's novel has worked by combining narrative (叙述) excitement and disputed historical detail.

问答题The emergence of the European Union has been one of the defining events of the twentieth century. It has changed the political, economic, and social landscapes of Western European, changed the balance of power in the world by helping Europe reassert themselves on the world stage, and helped to bring the longest uninterrupted spell of peace in Europe recorded history. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, Europe was a continent of competing powers that repeatedly fought with each other on their own soil and took their mutual hostilities to other continents in their competition to build colonial empires. The tragic costs of nationalism were finally confirmed by two world wars, fought largely on Europe and leaving the Europe powers devastated and drained. If Europe had not learned of the barbarism and futility of war in the trenches of northern France and Belgium in 1914~1918, the horrors of the period 1939~1945 finally brought home the need to cooperate and to build the kind of society that would eliminate the seeds of conflict.
问答题In order to keep good friends together, we must, first of all, show respect to each other; there must not be any, however little, reluctance, interference or dominance involved. Should interest or temperament match, people tend to agree or become friends, or they part company and cease to be friends. You shall never go too far, disregarding manners, no matter what kind of close or intimate friends you are. Otherwise, that state of harmony and balance is sure to be upset and you are no longer friends. Generally, every one of us, as friends, still hopes to have a private room reserved for ourselves. By always having your own ways, you may risk intruding into that forbidden zone, causing conflict or estrangement. Though failing to show respect to friends only seems to be a trifle, it may turn out destructive in the future as if pre-destined. So the best solution for keeping good friends together is stick to showing manners as you see fit in everyday dealings and never meddle: always show respect to each other, and you'll enjoy lasting friendship.

翻译题Each of us requires about 50 quarts per day fro drinking, bathing, cooking and other basic needs. At present, 1.1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water and more than 2.4 billion lack adequate sanitation. "Unless we take swift and decisive action," says U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, "by 2025, two-thirds of the world''s population may be living in countries that face serious water shortage."
The answer is to get smart about how we use water. Agriculture accounts for about two-thirds of the fresh water consumed in the world. A report prepared for the summit calls for more efficient irrigation techniques and more planting of crop varieties that require less water and better monitoring of growing conditions. Improving water-delivery systems would also help, reducing the amount that is lost on the way to the people who use it.

The FDA has provided new rules for the blood centers. The government agency says new rules are designed to improve the blood supply system. The new rules call for blood centers to develop more ways to make sure their work is done correctly. These rules are another way to help keep the blood supply pure. A leading concern is that someone with AIDS virus might give blood to a blood center. For this reason, there are tests to find out if blood contains viruses that cause AIDS and other disease. Each year blood transfusion has saved millions of lives, however, if there is no secure blood, it's increasingly risky for the recipient of blood to be infected with HIV.

问答题Since 1951 the proportion of married women who work has grown from just over a fifth to a half. Compared with their counterparts elsewhere on the Continent, British women comprise a relatively high proportion of the work force, about two-fifths, but on average they work fewer hours, about 31 a week. There is still a significant difference between women's average earnings and men's, but the equal pay legislation which came into force at the end of 1975 appears to have helped to narrow the gap between women's and men's basic rates. As more and more women join the work force in the 1960s and early 1970s there was an increase in the collective incomes of women as a whole and a major change in the economic role of large numbers of housewife. Women's liberation looks disturbingly like the "right" to work more. Are liberated career women happier than satisfied mothers? Some think that if men are happy working, and women are happy helping them to deal with pressure, what is there to criticize?

If you frequently work far into the night or have a poor sleep, it stands to reason that you may start to feel a little run down. Though everybody is different, most people need at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night in order to function at their best.
If you have been lacking energy, try going to bed earlier at night. If you can wake up feeling well-rested, it will be an indication that you are starting to get an appropriate amount of sleep at night. If you sleep more than eight hours every night but still don't feel energetic, you may actually be getting too much sleep.
Once in a while, you are bound to have nights where you don't get an adequate amount of sleep. When your schedule permits you can also consid-er taking a short sleep during the day, for sometimes taking a nap is the perfect way to recharge your batteries,

问答题The modern Olympic Games were founded with the intention of improving health and education, promoting world peace, and encouraging fair and equal competition. But over the years, the Olympic saying, "faster, higher, stronger", has pushed scientists as well as athletes to do everything possible to reach new levels. Doctors, engineers and coaches all use everything science has to offer to achieve that little bit extra in competition. The reason modern technology has become part of sport is very simple: winning is just as important as it was 2,500 years ago at the Olympics of ancient Greece. Developments in technology have often been reflected in the methods of training and performance used at the Olympics through history. This technology falls into two main groups: improving an athlete's performance in competition, and allowing results to be measured more accurately. The introduction of high-tech equipment means that athletes in all sports, from the 100-metres sprint to the pole vault, can now train more effectively and nourish their bodies better.

问答题Order was caused by the need and desire to survive the challenge of the environment. This orderly condition called the "state", and the rules that maintained it, the "law" . With time the partner to this tranquility, man marched across the centuries of his evolution to the brink of exploring the boundaries of his own galaxy. Of all living organisms, only man has the capacity to interpret his own evolution as progress. As social life changed, the worth and rights of each member in the larger group, of which he was a part, increased. As the groups grew from clans to civilizations, the value of the individual did not diminish, but became instead a guide to the rules that govern all men.
She could still, after all these years, remember the blue mountains with the bright moon above them, and how a far-off town on one of the peaks had gradually grown whiter and whiter, till the moon faded, the mountains were touched with the pink of the rising sun, and suddenly the town was lit as by an illumination, one window after another catching and reflecting the sun"s beam, till at last the whole little city twinkled and sparkled up in the sky like a nest of stars.

问答题One of the most important components of Corporate Resource Management is to recruit and retain the best workforce possible. Unfortunately, hiring qualified employees is tougher today than it has ever been before. Competition for well-educated and highly experienced candidates is incredible and companies no longer control the hiring as they did in the past. New job creation has reached an all-time high of more than three million new positions per year. As a result, compensation packages required to attract the right candidates, especially for technical positions, have increased in a dramatic way. The recruiting landscape has changed virtually overnight. Not only is it a job seeker's market, but the demand for technical talent has vastly increased while fewer technology "raw recruits" are entering the job market. It is incredible that the number of students studying computer science in the US is half of what it was about 10 years ago.
