Marketing furniture to the public can be challenging for a small business owner. Consumers buy furniture pieces only occasionally. However, there are several furniture promotion ideas that can be used to help you reach your target market. One thing you can do is to talk with real estate(房地产)agents to allow you to display your furniture in a new home or open house setting. This is a good way to reach a key target market—new home buyers—who may need new furniture for their future homes. Increasing foot traffic(顾客流量)is also important for a furniture store. To get more people to the store, you can advertise a raffle event(抽奖活动). This event can be promoted in your local media and through direct mail campaigns or front door advertisements to generate more interest. In tough economic times, small business owners often suffer most as a result of slow consumer spending. To fight back against this, you have to make it easier for your customers to buy furniture. If you can, offer in-store financing, or drop the interest rate on your company's credit terms. Consider lowering your prices and holding two-for-one events to arouse more consumer interest.

The human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the outside world. Without our nerves and our brain, which is a system of nerves, we couldn't know what's happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture (折磨) is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir (苦行僧) who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (感觉), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

Dear Manager, After a serious consideration, I have definitely decided to resign from the department effectively on September 28th. I think you will readily understand my decision in view of my personal financial problems. I feel that great opportunities would be available to me to cope with these problems in some other companies. The two years working with you and my colleagues have been very pleasant and have provided a great challenge. I enjoyed working with you, and I regret very much the necessity of leaving me department only because of my extreme economic pressure. Before my leaving, I will certainly help in training the person you select to fill my position. If at any future time a problem should arise, I shall be happy to assist in any way I can. Yours sincerely, xxx

In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance, or getting together of high school students. It is always held near the end of the junior and/or senior year. It is a major event among high school students. High school juniors taking part in the prom may call it Junior Prom while high school seniors may call it Senior Prom. In fact, it is always a dance for both juniors and seniors. At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be showed. Other students may be honored to take part in a "Prom Court". Prom Queen and Prom King are honorary titles(荣誉称号) given to students who are chosen in a school-wide vote(投票) before the prom. Whether you can be a member in a Prom Court is due to the popularity of those chosen and their level of participation in school activities including sports. This honor is usually given to seniors. In addition to Prom Queen and Prom King, juniors may also be honored, but would be called "Prom Prince" or "Prom Princess". The British would call it Leavers' Ball or Leavers' Dinner formally, or informally, Leavers' Do. This is closer to the Australian description, although in the UK, some schools have called the above events proms. In Canada, Ireland and Australia the terms Grad or Formal are most commonly used and the event is usually held for those graduating from high school or middle school. In Ireland, the event is also known as the Debs, which is derived(源自) from Debutante.

There is an old saying in English; "Laughter is the best medicine". Until recently, few people took the saying very seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to investigate laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found evidence that laughter really can improve people's health. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films, while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be capable of reducing the effect of pain on the body. There is also some evidence to suggest that laughter helps the body's immune system, that is, the system which fights infection. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists (精神病学家)in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. 1) Laughter really can【R1】______ . 2)In the first test, it was found that laughter has similar effects to【R2】______ . 3) Other tests have shown that laughter can reduce the effect of【R3】______ on the body. 4) There is evidence to show that laughter helps the body' s【R4】______ . 5) In the clinics, the psychiatrists try to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them【R5】______ .

Insurance(保险)is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship-owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at any early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every vessel lost at sea. If these persons, each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as insured and those who administer(管理)the pool of contributions as insurers. The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form of contract on stout paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the premium(保险费), which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The premium for an insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more to make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.
