单选题(C)
I am an American. I believe that the American presidency is the most important job in the world. It"s a job that goes up for grabs (争夺) every four years. The candidate (候选人) who wins in November of 2000 will take office the following January and be the first new U.S. president of the twenty-first century.
The election campaign (运动) is a long one. Some say it begins right after the election and goes on for the next four years. That"s probably untrue, but it does last a long time. Those who have their eyes on the job have to start gathering support and building campaign organizations early.
Some believe that the campaign for president should be shorter. I disagree. A long campaign is an endurance contest. It gives the candidates a chance to show their strengths and forces them to overcome their weaknesses. The close examination makes it much less likely that the voters (选民们)will accidentally choose an unqualified candidate to be their leader.
Personally, I enjoy the contest. It"s a long-distance race that produces a winner who may have a profound effect on all our lives. The debates and November election are the sporting events that really matter !
单选题
(C) The way in which
memory takes place is not known. Some psychologists (心理学家) think that there is a
physical change in the brain ceils or nerves when learning takes
place. Psychologists are also unable to say what makes people
forget. Some things are forgotten quickly while others are always remembered.
Sometimes a person seems to have forgotten certain material completely, yet is
able to relearn the material more quickly than when he first learned it. In
trying to understand memory, psychologists have done a lot of
experiments. Psychologists have found that the conditions under
which something is learned have an effect on how well it is remembered. When a
great deal of material is to be learned, for example, to learn one thing at a
time is better than to learn many things at a time. A person then learns more
quickly and remembers better. Learning two similar things one
after the other seems to have a bad effect on memory. When a person memorizes
two sets of historical dates, one after the other, for example, he may mix up
the two--the learning of new material prevents the remembering of the already
learned material. Most forgetting takes place in the first day
or so after learning. After that, forgetting happens more slowly. Material that
is understood--such as ideas or riddles (谜语)--is not so easily forgotten. Very
little forgetting takes place in time if an idea is well understood. The more
meaningful the learned material is, the better it will be remembered.

单选题Sandy is nearly thirty. Her parents think it"s time she ______ married.
单选题Doctors in the Netherlands are allowed to help patients who choose to die. Ending a person"s life in this way is called "euthanasia".
However, a new law places strict controls on that. Both the patient and the doctor take in the making of the decision.
Patients must have a terrible illness with no chance of cure. They must choose to die on their own. They must be suffering from "unbearable pains".
Doctors must talk with at least one doctor who has dealt with euthanasia before. They must report the death to proper officials.
Some people refer to euthanasia as "mercy killing". But not everybody views it that way. Some simply call it murder.
The lawmakers voted 90 to 45 in favor of "euthanasia". Dr. Herbert was pleased with the vote.
He has already helped some patients kill themselves to get rid of their pains once for all. "Good-byes are painful, but it gives them a chance to say "I am leaving"", he said. "it can create moments of great closeness between people".
Dr. Karel Gunning said the practice goes against his training as a doctor. "Killing is not part of Medicines," he said.
Gunning argues that the doctor"s job is to make the person"s pain bearable. He also has other fears. "Our society is moving very quickly from birth control to death control", he said.
单选题He moved to a small town, ______ that nobody would find out what he had done before.
单选题I"m usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today"s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America"s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation—brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things—and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Given that we can"t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.
At the top of the list is nurturing (培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It"s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn"t have to ruin your life.
