You'd think Pauline Hord would have served her time by now. After all, she recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and by the time she achieved that breathtaking(激动人心的) milestone, she'd already done a 10-year stretch in the Mississippi State Prison. Ms. Hord is a sweet-natured, gentle-talking, white-haired Southerner who never owed a debt to society—thus, she never had to pay one. So you have to wonder what a woman like this is doing in a place where most people are itching to get loose. Unlike the rest of the population, Ms. Hord goes to prison freely and eagerly. And when she gets there, she persuades prisoners of every sort to sing little ditties(短歌谣) about their ABCs and XYZs. At age 80, Ms. Hord began teaching prisoners to read during a chance visit to the State Prison with a lawyer friend. "When I got there, I heard that a group of volunteer workers had been praying for a teacher. They asked me if I would come and I said I would be thrilled(非常激动的)," she said. On a personal level, Ms. Hord considers this rewarding work. "If you get at the reason why these men went into crime, you will find that none of them succeeded in their early years of schooling. They went to school at 5 believing they were going to learn to read. When they didn't learn in the first or second grade, they realized something was wrong. By 8, they were having problems. By 12 or 13, they were drinking or using drugs. And it's getting worse. I'm seeing younger and younger prisoners who know less and less. They can't read well enough to function in this society," she said. It is this situation that Ms. Hord goes to prison week after week to correct. And when her most difficult students finally begin to read, she is sure that she, too, knows why the caged birds sing.

There are many ways to learn about people of other lands. One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils (面纱) to hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs. Worldwide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim (帽沿) up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.

Music Many people like music. It has many sorts: soft music is graceful, rock music fast, classical music great, light music relaxing, and children's music interesting. You can pick and choose whatever you like. Now popular songs are in fashion. If you like music, you usually like singing, too. I am no exception. My brother and I like pop songs, and my parents like to listen to soft music. We are a musical family. Do you like music? Is your family full of music, too? Music is really great! I like it very much.

I received an e-card for Christmas from my brother to whom I have just finished mailing a card. I understand that sometimes it is easier and cheaper to send these things online. I have got my current job by applying online as well. Online schools now enable people to acquire college degrees without ever stepping into a classroom or meeting other students or teachers. Online dating enables people to see each other regardless of the time and place. This kind of life is amazing.

Each of us seeks our own path to bliss. In accepting the Nobel Prize from the Swedish King in 1980, I said that I had been doubly blessed. For in addition to receiving the recognition and distinction represented by the Nobel Prize, the research itself had given me indescribable pleasure. This kind of bliss is not uniquely(独特地)available to scientists only. Literature, music, art, even business, offers comparable rewards. It is there for all who venture beyond the realm of accepted knowledge and experience. Such adventuiss are challenging and demanding but well worth of the effort. For me, the adventure began as a young boy in secondary school. The wide range of questions we asked our teachers were rarely met with direct answers. Instead, our teachers encouraged us to find the answers by leading us to books, and most often to more than we had expected. Frequently, our teachers suggested ways to find the answers by searching the reference books that were available in libraries or by actual experimentation. As we progressed to high school, the teachers encouraged us to ask questions that went beyond our and their knowledge and experience, and to speculate(推测)on matters we could not find answers to. Later, when I was in a science club, I was challenged to solve problems about the natural world by experimentation. Perhaps it was those early experiences that sharpened my appetite for exploring the unknown and seeking solutions. Looking back on that period, I realize now that encouraging young people to discover for themselves the answers is not the easiest way to learn but it is the most rewarding. Developing curiosity and the instinct for seeking creative solutions are perhaps the most important contributions education can make. Schools everywhere would do well to pay attention to that lesson. And students everywhere must accept the responsibility that such an educational system places on them.
