A report from the Pew Research Center released last week shows that marriage has undergone significant changes over the last several decades as women's earning power and education developed more quickly than that of their husbands. While men and worrier still may be getting used to the shift, the overall effect seems to be positive. Men are taking on more housework and women are earning more outside the home, and—surprise! — divorce rates are dropping. "Women no longer need to marry up educationally or economically, so they are more likely to pick men who support a more egalitarian relationship," says Stephanie Coontz, author of Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage. The divorce rate peaked in the late 1970s, at 23 divorces per 1 000 couples, according to the Times. But it has since dropped: There are fewer than 17 divorces per 1 000 marriages today. And. according to a recent report, typically, women with economic independence and education are more likely to stay married. And, get this: In states where fewer wives have paid jobs, divorce rates are higher. While the earnings gap has yet to close completely, women aged 30 to 44 now make up the majority of US college graduates, and their earnings grew 44 percent from 1970 to 2007, according to the Pew study. That's compared to a six percent growth in earnings for men over the same time period. However, don't get too excited, ladies—research shows that you still bear most of the household responsibilities in spite of your earning power. The University of Wisconsin's National Survey on Households and Families mows that among working couples, women still do two-thirds of the housework. The good news, though, is that men are now spending more time with their kids. The same survey reveals that the amount of time dads spend with their children has increased by three times.

After a day's hard work, we need some sleep. During the sleep, the fatigue(疲劳)of the body disappears and recuperation(恢复) begins. The tired mind gathers new energy, and the memory improves. Some adults require little sleep; others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four hours. Infants(HJL) sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily, the amount gradually diminishing as they grow older. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive working under great pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people have little sleep. Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night. Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years. By that age you will also have developed a sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a favorite position, and a rule you need to follow in order to rest comfortably. Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours—nearly five days. Whatever the limit, it is absolute. Animals that kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.

阅读理解Historians and philosophers agree that ever since the development of agriculture, human beings have had an effect on the natural habitat (动、植物生息地) of many plants and animal species. As human populations have increased, as many as 6,000 species are disappearing each year. A number 10,000 times greater than before man appeared on the planet. In one day alone, say scientists, some 45 kinds of plants and animals will die, some 17,500 species will be wiped out. In 1977, the United States Congress took an important step to help the ever-increasing number of endangered species. With the enforcement of the Endangered Species Act, some species have gained more public recognition than others. Elephants and whales, for example, have received far more media attention than have the smaller, less known, and less attractive species that are also endangered. Yet it is the tiny species, such as bugs and bacteria, that keep the planet in balance. Scientists are becoming even more concerned with the fact that without equal concern for these species, the planet''s biological diversity will be destroyed, leaving us with a loss of potential new food and drugs. On the other hand, some scientists argue that the extinction issue is being exaggerated(夸大) , and that people are "crying wolf" by describing the loss of species as more alarming than it really is. History proves that every species will eventually become extinct. Evolution of species, they say, naturally involves the extinction of species;man has no control. In addition, many people point to the fact that the world is already lacking in resources, food, and adequate health care. Concerned more with economic survival, they ask whether it is, in fact, realistic to make a fuss over saving the elephant or other species that may become extinct many years from now, when people have families to feed tomorrow. These people question a law that puts the continuation of lower forms of life above man s own survival. QUESTIONS: 1. The issue: To what extent we should try to (46) ___________or allow for man''s development. 2. Proponents'' (支持者) ( of saving endangered species) arguments: a. The extinction of plants and animals is (47) ___________before man appeared on the planet. b. Tiny species keep the earth in balance. c. Man needs (48) ___________for food and drugs. 3. Opponents'' (反对者) ( of saving endangered species) arguments: a. Proponents exaggerate the case. b. Species (49) ___________. c. Man''s need (50) ________.
