阅读理解When you have an idea of the kind of car you might be buying, take the time to look up road tests. These appear in consumer magazines and in magazines for automobile enthusiasts, and both types are usually available in your library if you''re not a subscriber. The consumer magazines generally pay more attention to practical things like roominess, gas mileage, and repair records; the enthusiasts'' magazines pay more attention to things like performance and style. You should remember that the enthusiasts'' magazines depend on the auto industry for the advertising that keeps them in business and some (not all) will manage to find something nice to say about all cars. So read about several road tests of the car you are thinking of getting.
You may want to skip this step because your mind is already made up------maybe you always buy a certain make of car or you like one that a friend has. But check the magazines'' road tests anyway; they may change your mind.
Note too that Federal law requires manufacturers to make available to prospective purchasers certain items of information regarding tires, braking, and passing and acceleration ability. This information must be available in the dealer''s showroom, and also normally found in the glove box of the vehicle, either in the owner''s manual or as a separate document. Thus, you can easily compare the performance figures of various makes and models, to assist you in making your decision.

阅读理解With the steady increase in the amount of leisure time that people enjoy today, the importance of businesses that deal with leisure products and services is also steadily increasing.
One of the biggest such industries is the tourist industry. Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists ——and guides, brochures, souvenirs——is one of the major industries in many countries. Since people are now having longer vacations and are more and more interested in seeing other parts of the world, this business will no doubt continue to grow.
Another industry obviously devoted to leisure is entertainment. Movies, TV shows, concerts and plays are usually intended for our leisure. The same can be said of most books, except textbooks. Professional sports make money because people pay to watch them in their free time.
This list could be greatly extended. But even among these industries, we have mentioned only part of the picture. The people who make the TV sets and build the theaters and tourist hotels are as much a part of the leisure industry as the singers or the hotel clerks.

阅读理解In recent years, there has been a big increase in air travel and many large airports have now reached the limit of the number of aircraft movements they can handle. The problem is made worse by the size of many major cities which prevents the extension of existing airports. Any new airports to be built a long way from city centers will create communication problems and in many countries there simply isn''t enough land for such developments.
Now a new proposal has been put forward which would help to relieve the congestion (拥挤) , as far as short flights are concerned. This involves the use of smaller aircraft, carrying about 50 passengers, which only require a short take-off or landing area and which make comparatively little noise because they are propeller-driven (螺旋桨推进). Such aircraft could operate much nearer city centers, say, on disused industrial sites, and give a good service to businessmen and other travelers who are going between centers, which are relatively close, such as European capitals.
The main problem remaining is the question of noise. There has been so much publicity in recent years regarding the high level of noise near airports, that any government can expect to find considerable resistance to building new airports in towns, even though these short-range small planes are relatively quiet. The fact remains that increasing numbers of people want to travel by air and will accept somewhat slower flights if they can have the convenience of an airport near the city center. In the end, it''s a question of compromise between the travelers and the local inhabitants.
阅读理解Accreditation is a system for setting national standards of quality in education. The United States is unique in the world because its accreditation system is not administered by the government, but rather by committees of educators and private agencies like the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Society of Engineers. Before registering to study in any educational institution in the United States a student should make certain that the institution is accredited in order to assure that the school has a recognized standard of organization, instruction, and financial support. Foreign students should be particularly careful to check an institution''s accreditation because other governments or future employers may not recognize a degree earned from a school that has not received accreditation. If a college is accredited, catalogues and brochures will usually indicate the accreditation status. If you are not sure about a certain school, don''t hesitate to check its reputation with an education officer at the nearest U.S. Embassy.
QUESTIONS:

阅读理解Human cloning (克隆) technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden.
? With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages (百分比 ) , are not very successful. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before.
? We should be able to clone the bone marrow (骨髓) for children and adults suffering from leukemia (白血病). This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology.
? We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.
? Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene - related diseases.
The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.

阅读理解The earth we live is a ball of very hot rock. It is good for us that the outside shell is cold. If it were not, no one could live here. What if our earth were only as big as an egg? Then the outside part would be as deep as the egg''s shell.
The earth''s shell has cracks in it in some places. In New Zealand, this shell seems to have more cracks than in other places on the earth. There are spots where the ground is so hot that it burns the bottom of your shoes. In some places, hot water shoots into the air from time to time. At other points, you can see steam coming up from pools of hot water.
The people who live in North Island, New Zealand, make use of the heat that comes from inside the earth. Some of them cook in the hot pools. They put food into a basket and place it in the water. Washing clothes is done in much the same way.
Many people bring the hot water from below the earth into their houses, They do this by putting a pipe a hundred feet or more into the ground. In this way they get hot water and steam for cooking and washing, for heating their homes.
For most of us, the heat under our feet is too far away to use. We must make our heat by burning coal, oil or gas. The people who get heat from inside the earth are lucky. It takes money to pay for the coal, oil and gas.
