单选题Americans with small families own a small car or a large one. If both parents are working, they usually have two cars. When the family is large, one of the cars is sold and they will buy a van(房车). A small car can hold four persons and a large car can hold six persons but it is very crowded. A van hold seven persons easily, so a family three children could ask their grandparents to go on a holiday travel. They could all travel together. Mr. Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. 单选题The London Stock Exchange has always been famous as a place for men only, and women used to be strictly forbidden to enter.
But the world is changing day by day, and even the Stock Exchange, which seemed to be a man"s castle, is gradually opening its doors to the other sex. On 16
th
November 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council (the body of men that administers the Stock ExchangE.decided that women should be allowed on to the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the “castle” had not been completely conquered. The first girls to work in “The House” were not brokers or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stockbroking firms, nor to be authorized dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators.
Women have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in “The House” to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been “No”. There have been three refusals of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted, although in a very junior capacity. Two firms of jobbers made an application to the Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks. Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchange explained, after this news had been given, “The new floor is going to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will have their own stands, with space for a telephone and typewriters. Therefore there will have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in.” This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women. However, it was a step in the right direction. The Chairman of the Stock Exchange sail: “ I think that the opening of the new building will eventually lead to women being allowed to have full membership of the Stock Exchange. It is only a matter of time; it must happen.”

单选题A United Nations report is sounding an alarm on the state of the earth"s natural resources, in advance of this month"s U. N. sponsored sustainable development summit (峰会) in Johannesburg.
The report says sea levels rose and forests were destroyed at unprecedented (前所未有的 ) rates during the last decade. It notes that more than 40 percent of the world"s population— two billion people—now faces water shortages. And it predicts that with the global population expected to increase from six billion to eight billion people over the next 25 years, further environmental stress is expected. U. N. Under Secretary General Nitin Desai says the most important message in the report is that the world"s environmental crises are interrelated. As an example, he cites the "Asian Brown Cloud", a "poisonous cocktail" of particulate (微粒的) matter, chemicals, and various aerosols (浮质), currently hanging over a vast area of southeast Asia.
"Here you have a situation which arises because of the unsustainable way energy is used in this region, which is leading to these problems which impact on agriculture, on water, on health," said Mr. Desai. "If you really want to address water, agriculture and health, you have to address energy. You can"t reduce poverty unless you also address land and water. You can"t improve children"s health without addressing water and sanitation (卫生) and air quality."
Mr. Desai, who will lead the Earth Summit, says that governments must form specific partnerships to reduce threats in five areas: water, energy, agriculture, biodiversity and health.

单选题 Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they
provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help to
prevent droughts (干旱) and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts
of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most
important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them
down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best
friends he had. Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its
trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire (帝国). It gained the
empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire
fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced by floods and
starvation. Even though a government realizes the importance of
a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to
see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with; and he can earn money
by making charcoal (木炭) or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy
or too careless to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has
a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly
disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers' sons and
grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there
are trees, their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in—and also
bind the soil, thus preventing its being washed away easily; but where there are
no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away from the surface, causing
floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well.
When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.
