单选题Australia is nearly as large as the United States, but most of it is too dry for people to live in. Around this dry part are large sheep and cow farms. A few of them are as large as the smallest states in America. Often the nearest neighbors are several hundred kilometers away. The two-way radio is very important to people who live on these great Australian farms. It works much like a telephone. A person can listen to someone else talk and then give an answer. For example, people on the large farms could talk to a doctor far away. They could tell the doctor about someone who was ill, and the doctor could let them know how to look after the sick person. As the large farms were so far from towns, the children could not go to school. Radio schools were started for them in some places. At a certain time each day, boys and girls turn on their radios and listen to teachers in cities far away. Families on the large farms wanted to give news to their neighbors. The program "Round Robin" talks by radio were started to keep families in touch with each other. They could talk about who was going away and who was ill. The men could talk about their sheep and cows and how much money the markets would pay for them. In many ways the radio became a newspaper for the farm people of Australia.

单选题Mr. Phanourakis was eight-five years old when he said goodbye to his Greek mountain village and took an American ship for the United States. His sons had done well in the restaurant business there and wanted him to spend his remaining years with them. The old man knew no language except his own. He made his way easily about the foreign ship. When it was lunchtime on his first way on board he found the number of his table on the passenger-list outside the dining room and went straight to it. Together with other passengers, he waited for the chief steward (乘务长) to tell him where to sit. It was a small table for two. After a few moments his table companion arrived and murmured (低声说) politely, "Bonapetite." Then he took the other chair. Mr. Phanourakis looked at him quickly and smiled, "Phanourakis," he said, carefully pronounced the Greek syllables (音节). In the afternoon, one of the ship"s officers, who spoke some Greek, asked the old man if he had found anyone he knew. Mr. Pharourakis shook his head and said, "No, the only person I"ve met so far is my table companion. He must be French. His name is Bonapetite -or something like that. "The officer said gently, "That"s not his name. It is a French expression that means good appetite."

The members of the family and visitors take tea in the sitting-room. Each person has a cup and saucer, a spoon (汤匙) and a small plate for bread-and-butter and cake. By the way, do not help yourself to cake first, bread-and-butter first, then cake if there is any. Another piece of advice, do not put more than one piece of bread or cake on your plate at the same time.

单选题The Changjiang River is not the longest, the widest, or the most powerful river in the world. But in one sense it is the most important river, because it serves more people than any other river. In every way the Changjiang River is China"s life stream. The Changjiang River isn"t just a trade river, a high way along which goods are picked up and sent. It is an agricultural river as well. A lot of irrigation(灌溉)ditches(渠)go out from it to millions of tiny garden-size farms. There men and women work endlessly with very old hand tools-planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, raising the family"s food and raising the nation"s food. It begins somewhere high in the place north of Tibet, running down from a three-mile height. It goes for hundreds of miles, shouting loud through valleys. Only in the last 1,000 miles of its 3,900-mile journey does the Changjiang River become the sunny and cheerful river.

They are: (1) green and yellow vegetables of all kinds; (2) citrus(柑橘类) fruits and tomatoes; (3) potatoes and other fruits and vegetables; (4) meat of all kinds, fish and eggs; (5) milk and foods made of milk, like cheese and ice-cream; (6) bread or cereal(谷类, rice is also in this kind of food; (7) butter, or something like butter, with fat(脂肪). People in different countries in the world eat different kinds of things. And people in different countries don't always eat three times a day. In some place people eat once or twice a day; in other countries, people eat three or four times a day. Scientists say that these differences are not important. It doesn't matter if a person eats dinner at 4 o'clock in the afternoon or at 11 o'clock at night. The important thing is that every day a person must eat something from each of the seven kinds of food. The most important thing is that we must find some way to help the hungry people and make the people have right kinds of food, make them strong and healthy.
