单选题In Cardiff I was put to work in furniture department at one of the local stores. It was large, fairly out of date, run (经营), like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn't too diligent (勤奋) about that either. One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity (不安全感) by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers (雇客). Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom (货仓) with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to "put them up". I couldn't put anything up--I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six-inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子), helpless with laughter. Finally he saw the joke too, and we went off to the members' store for a conciliatory(和解) cup of tea. Several days later, I finally left the store. Thank God!

单选题When I was about 12 I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was skinny, I wasn't a good student, I was boyish, I talked too loud, and so on. I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger, I ran to my father in tears. He listened to my outburst (爆发) quietly. Then he asked, "Are the things she says true or not?" True? I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it? "Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said." I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being skinny), but a good number I could — and suddenly wanted to —change. For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself. I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it. But you've got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you'll know it. You'll find that it will echo (回想) inside you." Daddy's advice .has returned to me at many important moments.

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} Today I would like to tell you about the effects of old age on health. Actually today a lot of improvements have taken place in the care of old people and old people's health is not nearly so bad as it used to be. Probably many of the fears that people have of growing old are greatly exaggerated(夸大). Most people, for example, dread becoming senile. But in fact very few people become senile Perhaps only about 15% of those over 65 become {{U}}senile{{/U}}. Actually much more common is in fact caused by doctors ourselves. And that is over-medication. Nearly 80% of people over 65 have at least one serious illness, such as high blood pressure, heating difficulty or heart disease And very often to combat these they take a number of drugs and of course sometimes there are interactions among those drugs. And this can cause a lot of complications from mental confusions, very commonly, to disturbance of the heart rhythrn(节奏). So this is a problem that doctors have to watch out for. Probably the most ignored disorder among old people is depression. Maybe about 15% of older people suffer from this condition. A lot of it is caused by this over-medication which we mentioned. Although it is better now for old people we have to admit that the body does change as we grow older. The immune(免疫的) system starts to decline and there are changes in metabolism(新陈代谢), lungs, the senses, the brain and the skin. So what should an old person do to counteract these changes? He or she should eat a balanced diet -- not too much fat -- chicken or fish should be eaten rather than eggs or beef. Eat more high-fiber and vitamin-rich foods, such as vegetables and fruit. The old person should give up smoking if he hasn't already done so. He should also do regular exercises -- at least half an hour, three times a week. No section of the population can benefit more from exercise than the elderly.

单选题Greysteel, Northern Ireland—Protestant (新教的) gunmen shouting "trick or treat" walked into a Northern Irish shop and killed at least seven people to avenge (报仇) the bombing of a protestant shop one week ago. Eleven people were wounded, several seriously,, when the two gunmen walked into the crowded Rising Sun pub in Greysteel, some 120 kilometres northeast of Belfast, carrying guns. It is said that they went near a frightened teenage girl and one made the old "trick or treat" greeting that children worldwidely use to get sweets from their neighbours. "I don" t think that"s funny," she replied, then she was shot down. The dead included an 82-year-old man, a 52-year-aid woman and the 19-year-old girl who had received the "trick or treat" offer. The shooting brought the death since Saturday"s IRA Belfast bombing to 23. Six Catholics (旧天主教教行徒) were killed by protestant death team in the past week. It was the second time since Thursday that protestant gunmen had struck outside Belfast, which faces North Sea Strait on the east.

单选题Our community has just modified the requirements for high school students to become graduates. It requires all students to finish at least forty hours of (36) learning (37) they get a diploma that they have (38) for. Service learning is such a learning that also benefits the community. It includes such activities as picking up rubbish along the banks of river, working in a soup kitchen, or tutoring A student. After a service (39) , students must write a (40) about what they have learned. It is asserted by supporters that there are a lot of (41) of service learning. First and foremost, students are forced to think not only their own (42) but others', and gradually become very (43) of the needs of others. (44) , students can learn some skills that are closely related to their real life such as (45) , problem solving, and team spirit. Finally, students may find out possible careers (46) service learning. If, for instance, a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she can choose to tutor a student in a reserved classroom several hours each month. (47) there are many benefits, opponents (反对者) raised some questions (48) the new requirements. First, they argue that students go to school (49) to learn core subjects and skills. Service learning, however, is time-consuming and students who spend too much time on it will certainly (50) the core subjects. Second, they hold the opinion that forcing students to work with no (51) is illegal. By requiring service, the school deprives an individual of freedom to choose. As far as I'm concerned, service learning is beneficial not only to the community, but to (52) because they can learn new skills, and find out different careers suitable for them. However, I don't advise that people (53) others under force and the (54) to help others must come from the bottom of the heart. I think the best solution is to give students choices: A student should choose at least forty hours of either independent study or service. It advocates both freedom and responsibility, and as young adults, we must learn to deal with both (55) .
