单选题Last April, on a visit to the new Mall of America near Minneapolis, I carried with me a small book provided for the reporters by the public relations office. It included a variety of "fun facts" about the mall, such as: 140,000 hot dogs are sold each week, there are 10,000 full time jobs, 44 sets of moving stairs and 17 lifts, 12,750 parking places, 13,000 tons of steel, and $1 million is drawn weekly from 8 ATMs. Opened in the summer of 1992, the mall was built where the former Minneapolis Stadium (体育馆) had been. It was only a five-minute drive from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. With 4.2 million square feet of floor space -- twenty two times the size of the average American shopping center -- the Mall of America was the largest shopping and family recreation (娱乐) center under one roof in the United States. I knew already that the Mall of America had been imagined by its designers, not merely as a marketplace, but as a national tourist attraction. Eleven thousand articles, the small book informed me, had been written about the mall. Four hundred trees had been planted in its gardens, $625 million had been spent to build it, and 350 stores were already in business. Three thousand bus tours were expected each year along with a half-million Canadian visitors and 200,000 Japanese tourists. Sales were expected to be at $650 million for 1993 and at $1 billion for 1996. Pop singers and film stars such as Janet Jackson and Arnold Schwarzenegger had visited the mall. It was five times larger than Red Square and it included 2.3 miles of hallways and used almost twice as much steel as the Eiffel Tower. It was also home to the nation's largest indoor park, called Knott's Camp Snoopy.

单选题Tears are nature"s way to make us feel comfortable. When our eyes are made uncomfortable by some small pieces of pollution, or when we are cutting onions, or when we are tired and become" red-eyes" because of working for a long time, tears form in our eyes to clean and refresh them. Tears are also a sign of strong emotion. We cry when we are sad and we cry when we are happy. And tears seem to be uniquely (唯一) human. We know that animals also have emotion—fear, pleasure, loneliness—but they do not shed (流) tears. From this we can conclude that tears are closely related to the emotional and biological character of human. Biologically speaking, tears are actually drops of saline fluid, which is a little bit salty (咸的), produced by a gland (腺) in the body. Because salt is an important part, tears may actually be the strongest evidence that the human is the end product of a long evolutionary process that began in the sea. And it is clear that, the shedding of tears has a specific biological function, besides the emotional benefits (好处). Through tears, we can eliminate from our body certain chemicals which appear because of stress and create a chemical imbalance in the body. Crying actually makes us feel better by correcting that imbalance and making us feel good again.

单选题 Thurgood Marshall is one of the most well-known individuals in the history of the civil rights movement in America. He was born on July 2, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland, to a dining room steward and a school teacher. He was not born to wealthy parents. His education began in the public schools in Baltimore and he attended college at Lincoln University. After graduation from college, he entered Howard University Law School and graduated with honors at the age of twenty-five. Marshall began his law career in Baltimore and represented the poor and the weak in legal matters. The NAACP became aware of his legal abilities and asked him to join their staff. Marshall won thirty-two of the thirty-five cases he argued before the Supreme Court during the time he worked with the NAACP. In 1961, he became a member of the United States Second Court of Appeals. Four years later, he was appointed Solicitor General and was the first black to hold this position in the history of United States. Finally, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1967 and was the first black to be appointed to the highest court in the United States. Marshall served in this position until his retirement in 1991. He died at the age of 84. Thurgood Marshall will be remembered for his involvement in the civil rights movement and for paving the way for much of the progress in civil rights. His dedication to the understanding and defense of the United States Constitution has touched all of our lives in so many ways.

单选题I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write, but it was many months before I settled down. I wasted a lot of time looking for the "typical" village. Yet no such thing exists. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a newspaper reporter because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the developing countries was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first had to try and share their way of life. In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a rough road. Then came a rough walk down a path to the river. After this I began the climb into the hills. Every time I stopped to catch my breath, there was a wonderful sight. After several hours' walk the village was in sight.
