Walking is a great way to get in shape without breaking the bank (it's free and you can do it every day). But there are other benefits to this exercise that you may not have realized. Here are some fun facts to encourage you to lace up your walking shoes. In his book, The Lost Art of Walking, Geoff Nicholson praises the virtues of walking, and explains how and why we walk. Besides providing physical, psychological and social benefits, this simple, free activity can transform your life, he suggests. In his opinion, walking can promote good health, keep you mentally refreshed, allow for social bonding and let you see the world around you. From a health perspective, walking is the key to managing weight, controlling blood pressure, and reducing the risk of a stroke, breast cancer, diabetes (糖尿病) and other diseases. A brisk daily walk lengthens your life, decreases the risk of depression and improves your mood and sense of well-being. From a psychological viewpoint, walking offers an opportunity to clarify thoughts, to solve problems and to reduce stress. If you establish a rhythm that is relaxing and peaceful, walking can also become a form of meditation (思考). Walking regularly with someone else enables a friendship to blossom as the pair of you exercise. You can also schedule regular walk "dates" with your spouse or partner and use the time to discuss issues without distractions. Also, the best way to explore some of the world's great cities—such as New York, London, Paris and Rome—is on foot. Walking stimulates the senses and enables you to enjoy a rich engagement with life around you. According to Nicholson, the poet William Wordsworth toured round the world seven times during his lifetime. Wordsworth reputedly delighted in the simple truth that "going for a walk is an invitation for surprise".

An American researcher has developed a simple device to help stop snoring(打鼾). The device restricts the movements of the tissue(器官组织)that causes the bad sound. Snoring is a common problem. It may prevent a person from getting enough sleep. It may also prevent enough oxygen from reaching the heart and lungs during the sleep. But for most people, snoring affects relations with another person who must sleep in the same room. Snoring happens when the sleeping person breathes with the mouth open. In the back of the mouth the tissues surrounding the entrance of the throat are soft. As the person breathes, the movement of the air around the soft tissues causes them to move or vibrate. This tissue movement causes the sound we call snoring. A number of possible solutions have been proposed. Some devices keep the mouth shut. They force the patient to breathe only through the nose. A medical operation is also possible. Other devices listen for the sound of snoring and then wake the patient. The new anti-snoring device was developed by a dentist(牙医), George Wagner of the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He developed a piece of plastic that fits up against the inside of the mouth. The device keeps the soft tissues from vibrating and making the snoring noise. It is worn only at night. Several patients report that the simple device has ended their snoring problem.

Visitors to Britain are always complaining about English food because they rarely get a chance to eat it. Most of the restaurants in large towns have foreign owners and serve foreign food. Those who do know English food are clear that it can be really very good. Furthermore, some people are not really interested in food. They think people eat to live, not live to eat. So they prefer food that is simple and easy to cook, or ready prepared food which only needs heating up before eating.
