阅读理解In Britain there is a National Health Service (NHS) which is paid for by taxes and National Insurance, and in general people do not have to pay for medical treatment. Every person is registered with a doctor in his or her local area, known as a general practitioner (全科医生) or GP. This means that their names are on the GP''s list, and they may make an appointment to see the doctor or may call the doctor out to visit them if they are ill. People sometimes do have to pay part of the cost of drugs that the doctor prescribes. GPs are trained in general medicine but are not specialists in any particular subject. If a patient needs to see a specialist doctor, they must first go to their GP and then the GP will make an appointment for the patient to see a specialist at a hospital or clinic.
Although everyone in Britain can have free treatment under the NHS, it is also possible for him to have treatment done privately, for which he has to pay. Some people have private health insurance to help them pay for private treatment. Under the NHS, people who need to go to hospital may have to wait for a long time on a waiting list for their treatment. Anyone who is very ill can call an ambulance (救护车) and get taken to hospital for free urgent medical treatment. Ambulances are a free service in Britain.
阅读理解In many countries in the process of industrialization, overcrowded cities present a major problem. Poor conditions in these cities, such as lack of housing, inadequate sanitation(卫生) and lack of employment, bring about an increase in poverty, disease and crime.
The over-population of towns is mainly caused by the drift of large numbers of people from the rural areas. These people have become dissatisfied with the traditional life of farming, and have come to the towns hoping for better work and pay.
One possible solution to the problem would be to impose registration on town residents. Only officially registered residents would be allowed to live in the towns and the urban population would thus be limited. In practice, however, registration would be very difficult to enforce (推行); it would cause a great deal of resentment (不满), which would ultimately lead to violence.
The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas more attractive, which would encourage people to stay there. This could be achieved by providing encouragement for people to go and work in the villages. Facilities in the rural areas, such as transport, health and education services should be improved. Education should include training in improved methods of farming and other rural industries, so as to develop a more positive attitude towards rural life. The improvement of life in the villages is very important, because the towns themselves cannot be developed without the simultaneous or previous development of the rural area.

Dear Mr. Spencer,
It was a pleasure to receive your inquiry of March 25 concerning the supply of our best ask conditioners. We are enclosing our price list in which you will find full details of our usual trade discount,
We note that you have requested an additional discount of 5% , and we would like to point out that the prices of our products have already been cut to the bottom, which cannot be offered by our competitors. We therefore regret that we are unable to allow you any discount in this aspect can, however, be sure that any advantage we receive in the way of manufacturing costs is always passed on to you in the form of lower prices.
In spite of the increased costs of raw materials expected next year, we anticipate being able to maintain present prices by improving our automatic assembly line. We hope we will keep in our friendly business relationship in the future.
We look forward to your early reply.
Yours faithfully,
Walter Steyens

阅读理解Galen, Andress Veaslius, and William Harvey were important figures in the history of man'' s study of his own body. Galen, a Greek who practiced medicine in Rome in the second century A.D. , contributed immeasurably to the understanding of anatomy (解剖学). His dissections (解剖) were limited to Barbary apes, however, because Roman religious and philosophical attitudes made experimentation on the human body unthinkable. Even so, his reputation was so outstanding and his conclusions were so logical that his writings on anatomy and physiology were accepted by medical men for more than a thousand years.
Vesalius, a Belgian who went to Paris to study medicine, made the first major successful challenge of the teachings and the theories of Galen. Vesalius shocked his professors by proposing that knowledge of human anatomy should be learned from human bodies. No one took him seriously because there was a French law prohibiting dissection of the human body. Vesalius, nevertheless, conducted research in secret. When he published his book on human anatomy in 1543, medical scientists criticized him for daring to attack the writings of Galen.
Eighty-five years later, an English physician named Harvey published a book that disproved Galen''s theory of blood circulation. Although Harvey'' s explanation was not universally accepted at the time, medical men of today credit him with one of the greatest advances in medical history.

阅读理解Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us "the truth". We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can''t be bad for us.
However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors'' own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean, however, professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.
If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don''t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.
On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.
