填空题 Sharing Economic Losses Through Insurance Each minute of the day or night, everyone faces a possible financial loss. Savings provide one way to take care of financial losses. But savings are not the answer to large losses. The best way to guard against large financial losses is through insurance. The purpose of insurance is to provide protection against financial losses at a reasonable cost. This is possible only when the cost of insurance is shared by many people who face a similar risk. But not all of them are likely to have actual losses at the same time. You Buy Insurance from Insurance Companies Almost 4,800 companies in the United States are in the business of providing insurance protection. These businesses are called insurance companies. Because most insurance companies operate on a large scale, they provide a way for large numbers of people to share their losses. Many Kinds of Risks Can Be Insured Insurance can provide protection against almost any kind of loss. However, the kinds of insurance protection that most people buy can be divided into four broad groups: property insurance, liability insurance, life insurance, and health insurance.
填空题Does your job make the world a better of worse place?
Those who sell hamburgers or polluting fuels may not love their jobs. Some of us even think our jobs damage human beings.
New York Times
recently cited a survey on how meaningful people regarded their jobs. It was conducted by Payscale, an online salary, benefit information company, in the US.
The survey was based on data collected from 30,000 workers over the last year. Respondents gave their opinion about whether their jobs "make the world a better place".
Results show only about 1 percent of respondents believed their job "may make the world a worse place." Then the article listed the occupations that make into the 1 percent, which may surprise readers.
Payscale first sorted answers by job titles. Top of this list are fast-food workers. Perhaps they"re concerned about the health hazards brought by the high-fat foods that they"ve sold.
Then came bartenders (酒保), who serve alcohol that might get people drunk or addicted.
In finance, both investment and the personal banks are made into the list. This accords with the average person"s notion that greedy bankers are responsible for our misery.
The legal profession is also high on the list of those who make the world a worse place.
Payscale also sorted people by different industries. It turned out those working in tobacco, gambling and gasoline sectors top this list of those who think their jobs hurt the planet.

填空题 The rules for writing an abstract(摘要) are almost the
same as those for writing the summary of an investigation report. In an abstract
you make an outline of the problem and the purpose of your investigation,
mention very briefly how you conducted the investigation or tests, describe your
main findings, and make the conclusions. All this must be done in as few words
as possible; ideally, your abstract will be about 125 words long and never more
than 250 words. From the abstract, readers must be able to
decide whether the information you provide in the scientific paper or report is
particularly interesting to them and whether they should read further. Because a
scientific paper is written for readers who generally are familiar with your
technical or scientific discipline(学科), you may use technical terminology (术语)
in the abstract. The abstract should be written last, when the whole paper has
been written, so that you can make an abstract of the brief details you need
from what you have al- ready written.
