填空题For over 200 years, the natural resources of America have been rewarding us with a rich and wonderful life. And the astonishing beauty of the land itself may be the most wonderful of all.
But the beauty that was once common across our land is slowly disappearing. In many parts of our country, the land can no longer be recognized for what it once was. That"s why, 22 years ago, the American Beauty Fund was founded for the preservation and restoration of the natural wonders of America. With your help, we can keep restoring the land to state that the past once knew, and preserve it, so future generations can see for themselves what it is that made America great.
Support the American Beauty Fund. The future of our land may depend on it.
To send donations, or for more information, write to: The American Beauty Fund, 219 Shoreham building, Washington, D.C. 20005.

The Red Cross is an international organization which cares for
people who are in need of help. A man in a Paris hospital who needs blood, a
woman in Mexico who was injured in an earthquake and a family in India that lost
their home in a storm may all be aided by the Red Cross. The Red
Cross exists in almost every country around the globe. The World Red Cross
organizations are sometimes called the Red Crescent, the Red Mogen Davis, the
Sun and the Red Lin. All of these agencies share a common goal of trying to help
people in need. The idea of forming an organization to help the
sick and wounded during a war started with Jean Henri Dunant. In 1859, he
observed how people were suffering on a battlefield in Italy. He wanted to help
all the wounded people regardless of which side they were fighting for. The most
important result of his work was an international treaty called the Geneva
Convention. It protects prisoners of war, the sick and wounded and other
citizens during a war. The American Red Cross was set up by
Clara Barton in 1881. Today the Red Cross in the United States provides a number
of services for the public, such as helping people in need, teaching first aid,
demonstrating water safety and artificial respiration, and providing
blood.

填空题Almost all energy on Earth comes from the sun. Even the fossil fuels (such as coal and oil) were produced originally by the heat of the sun. Unlike these non-renewable fuels, the sun's energy is (1) . It might sometimes seem as if the sun doesn't come out very much. Yet if we could learn to trap all the sunlight that falls on Earth in just one hour, we would have enough energy to (2) the whole world with fuel for a year. So far, scientists have not discovered any way of doing this. We must still get our energy from (3) fossil fuels and wood. We can make use of the rivers to make hydroelectricity, and (4) we can use direct solar power — that is, the sun's heat. In the (5) countries, people use animal power. And, of course, we have also (6) nuclear power.
