单选题In many business, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, "unlike humans, computers never have a bad day." And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions(业务,事务)are "untouched by human hands" and therefore safe from human temptation. Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience(良心) ,and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal. Computer criminals don't use guns, and even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are not witness and often no evidence. A computer can not remember who used it. It simply does what it is told. The head teller(银行的出纳员)at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else's account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When re police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records. Some employees use the computer's power to get revenge(报仇) on employers they consider unfair. Recently, a large insurance company fired its computer-tape librarian for reasons that involved her personal rather than her professional life. She was given thirty day's notice(辞退,解雇等的预先通知). In those thirty days, she erased all the company's computerized records. Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is "the tip of the iceberg. "As one official says, "I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching What we are seeing now is all so poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are doing those who really know how a computer works./
单选题Japanese officials are struggling to prevent the spread of mad cow disease. Japan"s first case of mad cow disease was reported in September. The Agriculture Ministry confirmed last month that a second cow was infected. Japan is the only country in Asia where mad cow disease is known to have spread.
Scientists believe cows get the disease by eating meat and bone meal from infected animals. Since September, Japan has banned imports and use of feed made from animal remains. Recently, the Agriculture Ministry announced plans to destroy about 5,000 cows that may have been given the feed. Sales of Japanese beef products have dropped sharply in the past 3 months. Since October, Japanese officials have tested all cows that are killed for their meat. Some scientists question the testing. They say the disease often cannot be identified in young animals. Scientists believe eating infected meat may cause a similar brain disease in humans. This deadly disease is called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It cannot be cured.
About 100 people in Europe have died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in recent years. Most of them have been in Britain. Researchers from France say evidence shows that young people are more likely to become infected. In Britain, the average age of those who died is 28. Only a few victims were older than 50.
From this evidence, the team says the probability of a person becoming infected decreases with age

Once it was considered good to keep the
car engine idle a minute or two following cold stars. Today, with modern
technology, the opposite is true. An engine operating under road conditions will
warm up faster and run more efficiently than one that is idling. Idling just
burns gas (on average, about a gallon an hour). When you have a
full tank of gas, park the ear facing downhill is possible, this will prevent
any gas from coming out of the tank. Parking in areas of less or no sunlight
helps prevent the gas from steaming that would occur if you parked in the hot
sun. Your car will stay cooler, too, and that means less gas consuming work for
the air conditioner once the engine is started. Stay away from
wide-track tires if you want top mileage (耗油1升行强多的英里里程). Narrow-track tires
produce less friction and thus rolling resistance. The same effect is achieved
by adding three to five pounds above recommended pressure to each tire; while
this won't noticeably affect your ear's sliding quality, it will increase tire
life and gas mileage. Check tire pressure often,
especially when the weather turns cold. The difference between winter and summer
tire pressure can be as much as eight pounds. This could cost you two miles per
gallon.
