单选题Working at home in your nightclothes while saving hundreds of dollars may sound too goodto be true, but it isn't. More and more employees are telecommuting, doing their job at home oranother remote site. "It's a trend that's here now and you're going to see a lot more telecommuting because people don't have to put up with commuting (来回上下班). They want more work/life balance, theywant less stress in their lives and companies want to drive costs after their bottom lines," says JohnEdwards, President of the International Telework Association and Council. However, Edwards says, "The biggest problem at the moment is dealing with middle managementwho is uncomfortable with management style focusing on results. They are used to the line ofsight management style. But they have to change to more results-oriented management style whichcan often be slightly opposite, so they feel uncomfortable with that." Edwards says telecommuting kills distance—and a lot of face to face meetings are replacedby teleconferences. "Distance does not exist anymore. It's the death of distance, if you like. Sonow it's possible to have more invisible teams so that the necessity to have the old bricks andwalls existing is beginning to disappear./

单选题People who are hit by lightning and survive often have long-term effects. These may include memory loss, sleep disorders, muscle pain and depression. Expels tell people to seek the safety of a building or a hard-top vehicle(运输工具)anytime they hear thunder, even if it is not raining. They say lightning can strike as far as sixteen kilometers from any rainfall. Lightning can travel sideways. And at least ten percent of lightning happens without any clouds overhead that you can see. People who are outdoors should make sure they are not the tallest thing around. Bend low to the ground, but do not lie down. And do not stand near a tree or any tall subject. Get away from water and anything made of metal. A car is safe, but do not touch any metal inside. Safety experts say people in buildings should stay away from anything with wires or pipes that lead to the outside. The National Weather Service says if you plan to disconnect any electronic equipment, do so before the storm arrives. Do not use a wired telephone. Do not use water. All these can carry electricity. Some people think a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge(电荷) afterward. Experts say this is not true. It is safe to begin emergency treatment. Each year about four hundred people in the United States are struck by lightning. Last year forty four people died. The average is close to seventy. The National Weather Service says that is more than the number of people killed by severe storms.

单选题{{B}}Passage 3{{/B}} Einstein, Albert (1879--1955), German-born American physicist and Nobel winner, best known as the creator of the special and general theories of relativity and for his bold hypothesis concerning the particle nature of light. He is perhaps the most well-known scientist of the 20th century. Einstein was born in Ulm on March 14, 1879, and spent his youth in Munich, where his family owned a small shop that manufactured electric machinery. He did not talk until the age of three, but even as a youth he showed a brilliant curiosity about nature and an ability to understand difficult mathematical concepts. At the age of 12 he taught himself geometry. Einstein hated the dull rules and unimaginative spirit of school in Munich. When repeated business failure led the family to leave Germany for Milan, Italy, Einstein, who was then 15 years old, used the opportunity to withdraw from the school. He spent a year with his parents in Milan, and when it became clear that he would have to make his own way in the world, he finished secondary school in Arrau, Switzerland, and entered the Swiss National Polytechnic in Zurich. Einstein did not enjoy the methods of instruction there. He often cut classes and used the time to study physics on his own or to play his beloved violin. He passed his examinations and graduated in 1900 by studying the notes of a classmate. His professors did not think highly of him and would not recommend him for a university position. For two years Einstein worked as a tutor and substitute teacher. In 1902 he secured a position as an examiner in the Swiss patent office in Bern. In 1903 he married Mileva Marie, who had been his classmate at the polytechnic. They had two sons but eventually divorced. Einstein later remarried.

单选题All of us communicate with one another verbally (口头的) as well as non-verbally. Most of the time we are not aware that we're doing it. We wave a hand, meet someone else's eyes or look away, shift positions in a chair. We make these movements unconsciously. But researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent (一致的) and comprehensible as language. Every culture has its body language. The way an Englishman crosses his legs is nothing like the way a male American does it. In talking, Americans are likely to end a statement with a lowering of the eyelids. They conclude a question with a lift of the hand or a widening of the eyes. With a future-tense verb they often gesture with a forward movement. There are regional idioms too. Your sex, ethnic background, social class and personal style all influence your body language. Nevertheless, you move and gesture within a certain idiom. Usually, the wordless communication acts to qualify the words. What the non-verbal elements express very often, and very efficiently, is the emotional side of the message. When a person feels liked or disliked, often it's a case of "not what he said but the way he said it." Experts in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or rejecting something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. The expert looks for patterns in the context, not for an isolated meaningful gesture.
