St. Valentine's Day has roots in
several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One
of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid(爱神丘比特), the Ro man god of
love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and
arrow. Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the
Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods.
Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On
February 14, Valentine was beheaded (斩首), not only because he was a Christian,
but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's
daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the
jailer's daughter a farewell let ter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Another
legend tells us that this same Valentine, well loved by all, received notes to
his jail cell from children and friends who missed him. Whatever
the odd mixture of origins, St. Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts. It
is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care, You can send
candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of
love. Most people send "valentines", a greeting card named after the notes that
St. Valentine received in jail. Valentines can be sentimental, romantic and
heartfelt(真心真意的) They can be funny and friendly. If the sender is shy,
valentines can be anonymous. Americans of all ages love to send
and receive valentines. Handmade valentines created by cutting hearts out of
colored paper, show that a lot of thought was put into making them personal.
Valentines can be heart-shaped, or have hearts, the symbol of love, on them. In
elementary schools children make valentines for their classmates and put them in
a large decorated box, similar to a mailbox. On February 14, the teacher opens
the box and distributes the valentines to each student. After the students read
their valentines they have a small party with refreshments. For
teenagers and adults, major newspapers throughout the country have a Valentine's
Day offer. Anyone can send in a message, for a small fee of course, destined for
a would-be sweet heart, a good friend, an acquaintance or even a spouse of fifty
years. The message is printed in a special section of the newspaper on February
14.
单选题Most of the jobs in society that are high-paying, powerfhl, and demand a lot of responsibility are held by men. I do not believe this situation arose because women are incapable of doing high-level work. I believe society could benefit if more women were in positions of power and therefore I think the government should reserve a percentage of these jobs for females. Why should government encourage a certain percentage of high-level jobs for women? Firstly, the problem of unfair employment distribution appears to come from social convention and not competence or true ability. At a young age most girls are not encouraged to pursue political office, business, or professional prestige. On the other hand, boys are told to do these things. As a result, men hold the high-level jobs but this does not mean they are very good at what they do. If the government set quota for hiring women to do high-level work, such as working in the government itself, then perhaps women would be more inspired to be ambitious in their life plans and contribute to a less-than perfect society. Furthermore, regulations in the workplace for hiring women would not be a new thing. Although not written or made into law, there seems to be rules for who can and cannot have high- level jobs. For instance, if a man and a woman both competed the presidency of a company or even the country, and both were equally qualified and had the same experience and background, there is little doubt who would get the job. Even more, if the man was less qualified and less experienced than the woman, the man would still probably get the job because of his sex. Therefore, to legislate a percentage of high-level jobs for women would work to fight the unwritten existing rules of the workplace. On the other hand, there are many arguments against the use of a quota system for women. It is true that the injustice and discrimination could be reversed. This is to say that some qualified men might be denied a job while some unqualified women would be given one. Also, the problem of sexism at work could be worsened instead of being overcome. People would doubt whether a woman with a high-level job was "truly capable"--men might feel bitterness and resentment, while women might think less of themselves and begin to depend on government "charity". Furthermore, there is the problem of defining what is a high-level job and determining an appropriate percentage. Nonetheless, a quota system would break down some barriers in the short term. Sexism in the workplace will not just magically disappear. To sum up, I have outlined some advantages and disadvantages of making quotas for the number of women in high-level jobs. Despite some of the obvious problems I believe that men and women can and should share power, wealth, and prestige. It is a cause worthy of our efforts.

单选题 In many countries such as France, Greece, and Japan,
it is often more difficult for students to pass the college entrance exams than
to do the course work when they are actually in college and students who don' t
have much money are at a disadvantage. Students prepare for these tests for
years in advance. Often, students attend a private school at night to get ready
for them. These private schools are usually expensive. If their families don' t
have much money, students can' t attend and they might not pass the entrance
exams without this extra preparation. In contrast, students can
easily get into an American or Canadian college--at least more easily than in
other countries. American students take an entrance exam called the S. A. T(the
Scholastic Aptitude Test(学习能力测验). However, colleges do not consider only S. A.T.
scores. They also consider a student' s grades and activities throughout high
school. A student who has done well in high school will probably get into
college. What happens when a student finally enters a college
or university? Students in China, Korea or Japan might find their college
studies easier than high school work. On the other hand, when American or
Canadian students begin college, many of them discover that they need to work
very hard and study seriously for the first time in their lives especially if
they plan to go to graduate school.

单选题Most insurance companies in the world are stock insurance companies or mutual insurance companies. A stock insurance company is owned by stockholders, who share in profits earned by the company. A mutual insurance company is owned by the policyholders(投保人). Profits earned by a mutual insurance company are returned to the policyholders as dividends(股息) or used to cut future insurance cost. In addition to the private insurance organizations, certain types of insurance are provided in the U.S. by governmental organizations. A notable instance is the system of social security operated by the federal government through the Social Security Administration. An insurance company may require a policyholder to provide proof of the ownership and the value of lost or damaged property before it pays compensation. For this reason, policyholders should have such evidence of their possessions as lists, sales receipts, appraisals(估价单), or photographs. The evidence should be kept in a safe-deposit box or other secure place outside the home. Many companies that sell health insurance policies(保险) provide cash benefits to the insured person. A cash benefit is a fixed dollar amount for each medical expense or day of hospitalization. If the cash benefits do not cover the entire cost of medical care, the policyholder must pay the rest.
