单选题The United States population is growing older. In 1987, 12 percent of Americans were 65 years old or older, compared with 8 percent in 1950. Population experts at the U.S. Bureau of the Census expect this percentage to continue to rise gradually, reaching 14 percent in 2010, then to skyrocket during the next 20 years, reaching 21 percent by 2030. This "graying of America" has generated concerns about whether the best really is yet to be, about how well off tomorrow's elderly will be. There also are questions about the impact of an aging population on the rest of society. The graying of America has two causes. First, advances in medical care have enable people to live longer. In the United States in 1900, the average life expectancy at birth was 47.7 years. By 1985, the latest year for which figures are available, it has climbed to 74.7 years. Second, the U.S. birthrate rose in the mid-1900s, interrupting a long, slow decline. A dramatic increase occurred during this brief rise. From 1945 to 1947, the rate jumped from 20.4 births for every 1,000 people to 26.6. In 1957, the birthrate was still high — 25.3 — but then began to decline. The birthrate dropped to the 1933 level of 18.4 in 1966, andby 1985, was 15.7. Most experts see little change in the downward trend of the birthrate in the foreseeable future.

单选题 Filling in company application forms can become a
boring and repetitive (重复的) task. Yet any carelessness on an applicant's part
can draw a negative reaction from readers. Each company or organization usually
uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the
same basic information, may vary in detail. Consequently the suggestions below
apply mainly to the approach you should take rather than suggest what you should
write. ·When visiting future employers, always carry your
personal data record with you so that you can readily search for details such as
dates, telephone numbers, and other useful information. ·Treat
every application form as though it is the first one you are completing--write
carefully and neatly. ·Use words that describe the
responsibility and different aspects of each job you have held rather than list
only the duties you performed. ·Particularly describe social
activities that show your involvement in the community, or activities in which
you held a teaching or coaching role. ·Pay particular attention
if there is a section on the form that asks you to comment on how your education
and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.
·Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say
shows a natural progression (进展) from past experience to the job you are
applying for. If you can, and if they fit naturally, add a few words to
demonstrate how the position fits your overall career plan.
单选题Everybody has an opinion about telecommuting (远程办公). "It won"t work in most jobs", "It costs too much ", " It reduces air pollution", " It helps people balance family and work responsibilities", and "Most people are doing it".
In reality, researchers continue to find strong growth and acceptance of telecommuting. Nearly two—thirds of the top 1000 companies in the world have a telecommuting program, and 92percent say it reduces cost and improves worker productivity (生产力). The days of everyone commuting to the office five days a week are quickly disappearing.
Telecommuting involves a non-traditional work arrangement enabling workers to work at home or elsewhere, some or all of the time. This is not a new, novel, or untested way of working.
But is it for you? Telecommuting is not a panacea (万能). Whether you are a manager, or an HR (Human Resources) specialist, there are decisions to make and actions to take before you begin a telecommuting arrangement.
Join us for any or all of the following meetings to get answers, information, and resources to develop and carry out a successful telecommuting arrangement. Each meeting offers you an informative presentation followed by the opportunity for a discussion with a panel of "experts" who have made telecommuting work for them.

单选题Once it was considered good to keep the car engine idle a minute or two following cold stars. Today, with modern technology, the opposite is true. An engine operating under road conditions will warm up faster and run more efficiently than one that is idling. Idling just burns gas (on average, about a gallon an hour). When you have a full tank of gas, park the car facing downhill is possible: this will prevent any gas from coming out of the tank. Parking in areas of less or no sunlight helps prevent the gas from steaming that would occur if you parked in the hot sun. Your car will stay cooler, too, and that means less gas consuming work for the air conditioner once the engine is started. Stay away from wide-track tires if you want top mileage (耗油1升行驶的英里里程). Narrow-track tires produce less friction and thus rolling resistance. The same effect is achieved by adding three to five pounds above recommended pressure to each tire; while this won't noticeably affect your car's sliding quality, it will increase tire life and gas mileage. Check tire pressure often, especially when the weather turns cold. The difference between winter and summer tire pressure can be as much as eight pounds. This could cost you two miles per gallon.
