单选题One silly question I simply cannot bear is "How do you feel?" Usually the question is asked of a man in action -- a man walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I' m all right." But you have put a bug in his ear -- maybe now he is not sure. If you are his good friend, you may have seen something on his face, or in his walk, that he overlooked that morning. It makes him worrying a little. He looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?" Every question has its time and place. It' s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask "How do you feel?" if you are visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train or sitting at his desk working, it' s no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous British writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him, "How do you feel?" Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age," he said, "either you feel all right or you are dead./

单选题People in Britain and the USA are taking more interest in modern dance. Dance classes of all kinds are popular; the audiences going to watch modem dance companies are also larger. And perhaps the most popular modern dance company in Britain is the Ballet Rambert. The Ballet Rambert is Britain" s oldest established dance company which began in 1926. In the 60s the company lacked the money to go on staging big productions. The directors wanted to encourage new talent and to keep up their high standards. A change of direction was necessary. They decided to give the ballet a "new look" in 1966. The aim was to pro vide a chance for new talent -- for musicians and designers as well as dancers -- and to show dance as a contemporary art form. And although some of the company" s previous fans disliked the change, new audiences came to see the productions. The modern dance pieces and modern music found unexpected popularity. In 1968 the Ballet Rambert was a great success in London" s West End. The company became a focus for new, progressive talent in the arts. Later, the Ballet Rambert started to introduce young people to modern dance by giving performances at schools, which again, was a success. The Ballet Rambert has managed to make modem dance popular while creating original and often avant-garde (标新立异的) productions. It can claim to be the oldest dance company in Britain and at the same time one of the most modern!

单选题{{B}}Passage 3{{/B}} Olympic Games, international sports competition, held every four years at a different site, in which athletes from different nations compete against each other in a variety of sports. There are two types of Olympics, the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Through 1992 they were held in the same year, but beginning in 1994 they were rescheduled so that they are held in alternate even-numbered years. For example, the Winter Olympics were held in 1994 and the Summer Olympics in 1996. The Winter Olympics were next held in 1998. and the Summer Olympics will next occur in 2000. The Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The program for the 1896 Games, comprising only summer events (the Winter Olympics were not established until 1924). included about 300 athletes from fewer than 15 countries competing in 43 events in nine different sports. In contrast, the program 100 years later for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Georgia, included more than 10,000 athletes from more than 190 countries competing in 271 events in 29 different sports. The Olympic Games are administered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC was created in Paris. in 1894. IOC members are officially considered to be representatives from the IOC to their own nations, not delegates from their own countries to the IOC. The first IOC members were all from Europe or the Americas, with the exception of one from New Zealand. The committee elected its first Asian member in 1908 and its first African member in 1910. Currently, members from European and North American countries still account for much of the IOC membership. IOC members must retire at the end of the year in which they reach the age of 80, unless they were elected before 1966, in which case they can serve for life.

单选题There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it and how to encourage a child to write without holding hiw back with the complexities of spelling. If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to "play safe". He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability. I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is not neat." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing. But it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors. But if his priorities had centred on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the writing would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement./

单选题When a conductor in Spain asked to see her train ticket, Janet Loops, an exercise instructor from Palo Alto, Calif., reached for her purse-and discovered her wallet was gone. She had no ticket, passport, credit cards, traveler's checks, cash. It took nearly a week to get a new passport and traveler's checks. Her trip was almost ruined. To guard against such disasters, especially, overseas, some experts suggest carrying your money and documents in a small, flat pouch around your neck and tucked under your clothing. A fanny pack can be used if carried in front, but be alert-it can be cut off. Other possible ways to foil(阻挠) pickpockets: Wrap rubber bands around a wallet to make it harder to lift from a pocket. Have zippers sewn into your blazer pockets. The key is to stay alert and "pack your common sense," says Alfred Boza, a Miami Beach police detective. Know, for instance, that thieves could be watching for you to leave' your bags unattended briefly at airport security checkpoints. If you're driving in unfamiliar places, keep as little as possible in your car's passenger area, where "smash and grab" thieves can get it. That means hiding luggage in the trunk and leaving nothing of value inside the passenger area when the car is parked. Also never leave maps-the mark of a tourist-visible. "Know where you're going before you get there," Boza says. "When shopping, leave your most expensive purchase for last." Ask at your hotel what parts of the city are dangerous, and avoid them. Before leaving his hotel room, Robin Myers, a computer researcher in Cupertino, Calif. , puts cameras and other articles too large for the hotel safe into luggage with combination locks. Wherever you are - in case of an emergency - have a phone credit card and know how to use it. The card will enable you to call an 800 number for help, sparing you the need for coins or collect calls.
