单选题 April fool's Day is traditionally a day to play practical jokes on others, send people on fool's errands, and fool the unsuspecting~ No one knows how this holiday began but it was thought to have originated in France. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 and celebrations lasted until April 1st. When New Year's Day as changed from March 25 to January 1st in the mid-1560's by King Charles IX, there were some people who still celebrated it on April 1st and those people were called April Fools. Pranks performed on April fool's Day range from the simple, (such as saying, "Your shoe's untied !), to the elaborate. Setting a roommate's alarm clock back an hour is a common gag. The news media even gets involved. For instance, a British short film once shown on April fool's Day was a fairly detailed documentary about "spaghetti farmers" and how they harvest their crop from the spaghetti trees. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his victim, "April Fool !" April fool's Day is a "for-fun-only" observance. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their "significant other" out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It's simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant, for he may be the next April fool!

单选题Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky(断断续续的) movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate(注视;固定下来). Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration(持续) of the fixation(固定,定位) ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids(陡峭的金字塔) so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive(连续的) fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it"s one thing to improve a person"s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.

单选题Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 41 through 45.For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A) , B) , C) and D ) . You should make the correctchoice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange or red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, or an ac-tive person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy andyou would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong - minded and determined. You wish to succeed andwant other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because theyhave been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don' t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened youreyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly. A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmthand cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. Light and bright colors make people not onlyhappier but also more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their ma-chines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray. Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorfulthings. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when yon find out what colors they like anddislike. And don' t forget that anyone can guess about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief or a lamp-shade.

单选题More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 mi-les per hour it is the same as falling from a third floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half. Therefore, drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to 50 pounds. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver" s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind. However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for notdoing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.
