单选题
You have been badly injured in a car
accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion (输血) because you lost
a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in
selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the
transfusion could kill you. There are four basic types of blood:
A, B, AB and O. A simple test can indicate a person's blood type. Everybody is
born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and
height, is inherited from parents. Because of substances
contained in each type, the four groups must be transfused carefully. Basically,
A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O
can give to any other group; hence, it is often called the universal donor
(通用献血者). For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called universal recipient.
However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually
receive only salt or plasma (liquid) until their blood can be matched as exactly
as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way, it is possible to
avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion. There is a
relationship between your blood type and your nationality. Among Europeans and
people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have
type O. The rarest is type AB. Other races have different percentages. For
example, some American Indian groups have nearly100 percent type
O.

45. We do not know how the first fire was made. Early fires on
the earth were certainly caused by nature, not by man. Some were caused by
lighting in a storm; others, perhaps, by the hot material which came out of a
volcano. Another quite possible cause is the heat of the sun. At first, man, like
any animals, was probably afraid of fire. So great was the power of fire that he
feared it and worshiped it. Gradually, however, with his better power of
thinking, he overcame his fear. Probably he overcame most of his fear when he
discovered how to make fire for himself. Throughout the ages he has learned more
about fire, how to control it, and how to use it in many ways. Now fire is no
longer a master or a god,it is a servant. We can only guess how
man first learned that a fire was useful and what uses he made of it. By taking
a burning stick from fire which had been started naturally, he could make a fire
at his own "home. "He could keep the fire burning by adding more dry grass,
leaves and wood. The fire served the chief purpose of frightening animals away.
He discovered, by some accident, that flesh roasted in front of a fire tasted
better. Then he found that roasted flesh would keep longer than uncooked flesh.
It must have been much later that man learned to cook food by heating it with
boiling water or with steam. He could not use such methods until he had learned
how to make pots for holding water.
