Aircraft Carriers are a powerful and
extremely flexible part of a nation's defense. A carrier is flexible in a way
that armies and air forces are not because it can influence events merely by
being seen. The power of an aircraft carrier can act as a visible deterrent
(威慑物) to enemy aggression. A carrier is also flexible because it operates on the
ocean. Unlike a land air base, no other country has to be consulted about where
a carrier can go and what it can be used for because most of the ocean is
considered international water and not part of any one country. This freedom
allows carriers to move from one trouble spot to another quite easily. Carriers
operate with a number of support and supply ships; this flotilla (驱逐舰队) of ships
is referred to as a carrier battle group. Since World War II
(1939-1945), carriers have primarily been used to influence world events and to
support troops ashore. When the Korean War (1950-1953) broke out in June 1950,
United States Navy careers were the only military airpower immediately available
to engage the enemy. U.S. Air Force units were unable to respond for several
months. Aircraft carriers were also the first American units to arrive on the
scene during the Vietnam War 1959-1975)and the Persian Gulf War
(1990-1991). While carriers are important, they are also quite
expensive, so there are only a few patrolling 巡逻) he world's oceans today.
Approximately 40 carriers of all types are currently in use or are being built.
Of these, over half are in service in the U.S. Navy. A typical American nuclear
powered aircraft carrier can cost well over $ 4 billion and take five years to
build.

Ours has become a society of employees.
A hundred years or so ago only one of every five Americans at work was employed,
i. e., worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but
working for himself. And when fifty years ago "being employed" meant working as
a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a
middle-class person with a substantial formal education, holding a professional
or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two
things have characterized American society during these last fifty years;
middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in
our working population—growing so fast that the industrial worker, the oldest
child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance
despite the expansion of industrial production. Yet you will
find little if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a
great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion.
You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it be the
mechanist's trade or bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires different
skills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they
all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large
business or in government, employeeship is more important to success than the
special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they
do not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do not
adequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder,
the more you get into administrative or executive work, and the greater the
emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical
abilities or professional knowledge.

In November 1965, New York was blacked
out by an electricity failure. The authorities promised that it would not happen
again. Pessimists (悲观者) were certain that it would occur again within five years
at the latest. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced
varying degrees of chaos throughout the city of eight million people. In 1965,
the failure occurred in the cool autumn and at a time of comparative prosperity.
In 1977, the disaster was much more serious bemuse it came when unemployment was
high and the city was suffering from one of its worst heat waves.
In 1965, there was little crime of looting (抢劫) during the darkness, and
fewer than a hundred people were arrested. In 1977, hundreds of stores were
broken into and looted. Looters smashed shop windows and helped themselves to
loot jewelry, clothes or television sets. Nearly 4,000 people were arrested but
far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of policemen
available was quite inadequate and they wisely refrained (抑制) from using their
guns against mobs (暴徒) which far outnumbered them and included armed
men. Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from
the shop windows. Banks and most businesses remained closed the next day. The
blackout started at 9: 30 p. m., when lightning hit and knocked out vital
cables. Many stores were thus caught by surprise. The vast
majority of New Yorkers, however, were not involved in looting. They helped
strangers, distributed candles and batteries, and tried to survive in a
nightmare world without traffic lights, refrigerators, elevators, water and
electrical power. For twenty-four hours, New York realized how helpless it was
without electricity.
单选题 The physicians in a hospital form the core of the
medical staff. But they couldn't provide effective medical care to their
patients without the help of numerous other medical employees. From the
viewpoint of the patients, the nursing staff is particularly important. Nurses
are usually in close contact with patients as long as they are in the
hospital. A nurse does not study for as many years as a doctor.
However, each must be equally dedicated. Caring tot sick persons requires a
great deal of patience and concern. Most nurses work long days, and they often
must work at odd hours or during the night. Under the
supervision of the head nurse, the nursing staff must provide nursing services
on 24-hour basis and attend to patients' needs. This responsibility continues
around the clock, and so nurses must work in shifts. A shift is a period of
duty, usually eight in length. The nurses on the ward rotate their shifts. All
of them work out of a central area on the ward called the nurses'
station. A nurse must always be alert. She can never afford to
be careless. This is true in all nursing situation, but it is especially true in
the intensive care unit. Patients under intensive care duty have one of the most
demanding jobs in the hospital. Serving as a nurse can be a
very. rewarding job. But it is not an easy one. Not every person is suited to
become a nurse. Only very dedicated people have chosen nursing as a
profession.

extreme form, poverty is a lack of basic human needs, such as adequate and
nutritious food, clothing, housing, clean water, and health services. Extreme
poverty can cause terrible suffering and death, and even poverty can prevent
people from realizing many of their desires. The world's poorest people—many of
whom live in developing areas of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern
Europe—struggle daily for food, shelter, and other necessities. They often
suffer front severe malnutrition(营养不良) , infectious disease outbreaks, famine,
and war. In wealthier countries—such as the United States, Canada, Japan, and
those in Western Europe—the effects of poverty may include poor nutrition,
mental illness, drug dependence, crime, and high rates of disease.
Extreme poverty, which threatens people's health or lives, is also known
as destitution or absolute poverty. Relative poverty is the condition of having
fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or
compared to worldwide averages. The reasons for poverty are not
clear. Some people believe that poverty results from a lack of adequate
resources on a global level—resources such as land, food, and building
materials—that are necessary for the well-being or survival of the world's
people. Others see poverty as an effect of the uneven distribution of resources
around the world on an international or even regional scale. This second line of
reasoning helps explain why many people have much more than they need to live in
comfort, while many others do not have enough resources to live.
