单选题The United States is a democracy, which means that the citizens run the government. Since we can't all make the rules, we elect representatives--our president, vice-president, senators, congressmen, governors, and others who make the laws and govern our country based on the beliefs of the people. These elected officials help pass laws that reflect the interests of their constituents, the people who live within the areas they represent. Since the right to choose these representatives-is in the hands of the people, it is very important that everyone in a community go to the polls to cast their ballots(投票). If only a few people vote, then the elected representatives may not truly represent the interests of the full community. Some day you may disagree with a decision made by your governor, state and federal(联邦的) representatives, or the president. The best way to make your opinion known is to go to the polls and elect new officials whom you believe will better represent you in the future. By not voting, you are in effect giving up your right to help make changes in our country. During a presidential election, when millions of people exercise the right to vote, you might think that your single vote won't make a difference. Remember, every vote counts. Even if the candidates you support aren't elected, you've still had a hand in shaping the country's future.

单选题Parents with an adopted child wonder whether, when and how to tell their child that he or she is adopted. They also want to know if there are special problems for an adopted child. Child and adolescent psychiatrists (精神病学家) recommend that the child be told about the adoption by the adoptive parents. Children should be told about their adoption in a way that they can understand. There are two different views on when a child should be told about the adoption. Many experts believe the child should be told at the earliest age possible. This approach provides the child an early opportunity to accept and integrate the concept of being "adopted". Other experts believe that telling a child too early may confuse the young child who can"t really understand the event. These experts advise waiting until the child is older. In either case, children should learn of their adoption from the adoptive parents. This helps give the message that adoption is good and that the child can trust the parents, If the child first learns about the adoption intentionally or accidentally from someone other than parents, the child may feel anger and mistrust towards the parents, and may view the adoption as bad or shameful because it was kept as a secret. Adopted children will want to talk about their adoption and parents should encourage this process. Several excellent children"s story books are available in bookstores which help parents tell the child about being adopted.

单选题No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling "interpretation" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it. I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", "a heightening of life, enjoyment with others". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of languages and literature more central than it presently occupies. I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room inthe classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

单选题Every town in the United States has a post office. Some are very small, and you may also find them in the corner of a shop. Others are larger buildings. They are open five days a week and on Saturday mornings. From Monday through Friday they are usually open from 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. . If you know how much the postage(邮资)is for your letter, you can buy stamps at any window. In some post offices you can buy stamps from machines. Stamps are sold many different prices, from one cent to many dollars. If you are not sure how much postage is for your letter, you may ask the man or the woman in the post office for help. He or she will give you the stamps you need. If you are sending your letter far away, you should use airmail envelopes(航空信封). Remember that postage will be more expensive for a letter to be sent outside the country. At a post office you can also buy postcards. A postcard is cheaper than a letter. Usually the price of postage for a postcard is about haft that of a letter. The postcards that you buy at a post office do not have pictures. However, also they are not to be sent outside the country.
