单选题At least 2.3 million people took some kind of online course in 2004, according to a recent survey by The Sloan Consortium, an online education group, and two-thirds of colleges offering "face-to-face" courses also offer online ones. But what were once two distinct types of classes are looking more and more alike--and often dipping into the same pool of students. At some schools, online courses--originally intended for nontraditional students living far from campus--have proved surprisingly popular with on-campus students. A recent study by South Dakota's Board of Regents found 42 percent of the students enrolled in its distance-education courses weren't so distant: they were located on campus at the university that was hosting the online course. Numbers vary depending on the policies of particular colleges, but other schools also have students mixing and matching online and "face-to-face" credits. Motives range from lifestyle to accommodating a job schedule to getting into high-demand courses. Washington State had about 325 on-campus undergraduates taking one or more distance courses last year. As many as 9,000 students took both distance and in-person classes at Arizona State last year.

单选题With the development of material prosperity, advertisements have become more and more important in our daily life. Advertisements give the newest information about product. If there are no advertisement, consumers could not know about goods in their nearby shops. Advertisement helps sell to a bigger market. Therefore, as more goods are sold, they are cheaper. Advertisements also provide money for newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, etc. But there are also some opinions against advertising. Some people think that advertisements do not give much information but only try to persuade you to buy. They create a demand for goods that are not really needed. Besides, advertising adds to the price of goods. Actually, every coin has two sides. Advertising is without exception. But in today's world, advertising is not only necessary but also helpful.

单选题Until the 20th century cigarette smoking was not a widespread habit. The cigarette industry started in the 1870s with the development of cigarette manufacturing machines. It helped produce great numbers of cigarettes very quickly and reduce the price greatly. And consequently more and more people, both men and women, began to smoke cigarettes. Men as a group, however, smoke more than women. But the highest proportion of smokers is found in the age group of 24-44, regardless of sex difference. Income, education and occupation all play a part in determining a person's smoking habits. City people smoke more than people living on farms. Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes. On the other hand, if a well-educated man with a higher income smokes at all, he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day. The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower education groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily. Among teenagers the picture is similar. There are fewer teenage smokers from upper-income, well-educated families, and fewer from families living in farm areas. High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who do not plan to continue their education after high school. Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke.
