单选题Directions : This task is the same as Task 1. The 5
questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45. Between 1977 and 1981, three groups of American women,
numbering 27 in all, between the age of 35 and 65, were given month-long tests
to determine how they would respond to conditions resembling those aboard the
space shuttle. Though carefully selected from among many
applicants, the women were volunteers and the pay was barely above the minimum
wage. They were not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol during the tests, and they
were expected to tolerate each others company at close quarters for the entire
period. Among other things they had to stand pressure three times the force of
gravity and carry out both physical and mental tasks whole exhausted from
strenuous physical exercise. At the end of ten days, they had to spend a further
twenty days absolutely confined to bed, during which time they suffered
backaches and other discomforts, and when they were finally allowed up, the more
physically active women were especially subject to pain due to a slight calcium
loss. Results of the tests suggest that women will have
significant advantages over man in space. They need less food and less oxygen
and they stand up to radiation better. Men' s advantages in terms of strength
and stamina, meanwhile, are virtually wiped out by the zero-gravity condition in
space.

单选题China will pay dearly if it does not act to build up an old-age social security system (社保体系), as its population aged 80 or above will hit 83 million by 2050, a population expert, Ma Li, has warned. China formally became an aged society in 2000, when the population aged 60 or above accounted for 10 percent of its 1.3 billion people. With an annual growth rate of 3.7 percent, China's population aged 80 or above will reach 22 million by 2020, and 83 million by 2050, according to Ma, a deputy (代表) to the 11th National People's Congress (NPC). In contrast to developed countries, China entered the aged society while it is still a developing country. "China is not yet ready for the aged society. It does not have a complete old-aged social security system. There are not enough resources. Fiscal (财政) support is scarce. And the risk is ever rising," said Ma. The lawmaker said China must act now to set up an old-age social security system that covers both rural and urban population. Such a system should be based on the care of the old people by their families, backed-up by community-level services networks and with old folks homes as a supplement, he said. Ma also stressed that China has the capacity to do that, as its economic structures and level of urbanization are well beyond the stage at which developed countries began to establish old-age social security systems for their rural populations.

单选题corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children's skills vary; skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple- choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lot of self-confidence. Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

During the 1960s there was an unexpected revival of oral poetry in Britain. The
live performance was seen as very important, not only for the poets, but also
for their audiences. People didn' t only buy a book of poems, they also went
along to see and hear their favorite poets read their own work. Many young poets
enjoyed a very large following which was made up mainly of young people. Some
poets became ahnost as famous as pop stars and Brian Patten was one of
these. He is one of a group of three young poets who became
very famous at that time. The other two were Roger McGoughand Adrian Henri. All
three of them came from Liverpool and together they become know as, of course,
"the Liverpool Poets". Brian Patten's poetry is not "difficult"
in the way that some modem poetry is. It can be enjoyed without a deep knowledge
of other writers and other poets. But like all real poetry it needs to be read
carefully in order to achieve the particular effect they want.
For instance, in his poem "Ode on Celestial Music" Brian Patten wants to show
the folly of trying to reject the world of physical beauty in favor of the world
of pure ideas. He wants to show that such a rejection is ridiculous. One of the
devices which the poet uses tO achieve this effect is to make the speaker in the
poem use colloquial language which contrast sharply with his lofty ideas.
