We know mosquitoes very well.
Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and
there are more than 2,500 kinds of them. No one likes the
mosquito. But the mosquito may decide if she loves you. She? Yes, she. The male
mosquito doesn't bite! Only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to
lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she
likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn't like your blood, she will
turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you,
just remember you are chosen. You're different from the others!
If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you
know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything
different. After she bites, you will have an itch (痒) on your body because she
puts something from her mouth together with your blood. When the itch begins,
she has flown away. And then what happens? Well, after her
delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She wants to find a place to have a
good rest. There, in a tree or on a wall, she begins to lay eggs, hundreds of
eggs.

Most insurance companies in the world
are stock insurance companies or mutual insurance companies. A stock insurance
company is owned by stockholders, who share in profits earned by the company. A
mutual insurance company is owned by the policyholders(投保人). Profits earned by a
mutual insurance company are returned to the policyholders as dividends(股息) or
used to cut future insurance cost. In addition to the private
insurance organizations, certain types of insurance are provided in the U.S. by
governmental organizations. A notable instance is the system of social security
operated by the federal government through the Social Security
Administration. An insurance company may require a policyholder
to provide proof of the ownership and the value of lost or damaged property
before it pays compensation. For this reason, policyholders should have such
evidence of their possessions as lists, sales receipts, appraisals(估价单), or
photographs. The evidence should be kept in a safe-deposit box or other secure
place outside the home. Many companies that sell health
insurance policies(保险) provide cash benefits to the insured person. A cash
benefit is a fixed dollar amount for each medical expense or day of
hospitalization. If the cash benefits do not cover the entire cost of medical
care, the policyholder must pay the rest.

Why don't birds get lost on their long
migratory flight? Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now
they're beginning to fill in the blanks. Not long ago,
experiments show that birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours.
But what about birds that fly mainly by night? Tests with artificial stars have
proved conclusively that certain night-flying birds are able to follow the stars
in their long-distance flights. One such bird--a warbler--had
spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it
showed an inborn ability to use the stars for guidance. The bird's cage was
placed under an artificial star-filled sky at migration time. The bird tried to
fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in
the position of the make-believe stars caused a change in the direction of his
flight. Scientists think that warblers, when flying in daylight, use the sun for
guidance. But the stars are apparently their principle means of
navigation. What do they do when the stars are hidden by clouds? Apparently,
they find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coastlines, and river
courses. But when it's too dark to see these, the warblers circle helplessly,
unable to get their bearings.
