单选题Most men and more than half of the women in North America work. In fact, many people who are lazy and don't work for a living are looked down upon, such as people who have got a fortune from their parents, or those who receive money from the government when they are young enough to take a job. Americans usually are expected to work hard at their regular jobs. They have believed that they felt shameful if they did not work as hard and carefully as they could, and God would punish those who were careless or lazy in their work. This is called the "work ethic". Its roots are in the Bible's teachings: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." and "Do not work to please men, but just please God." For 400 years or more, it has been a characteristic of Americans. Historians say that this "work ethic" was perhaps the single most important reason for the rapid economic growth and continuing success of the United States. For the sake of better work, now companies are much more flexible in the number of days and hours their employees work. Many offices now allow their employees to choose the time they begin in the morning, so long as they arrive before 10:00 am and work for 8 hours. In America, there are women who choose to stay home as homemakers rather than to pursue a career. This is possible if the husband's salary is enough to support the family. These women value family over career, and are not considered lazy by any means.

单选题{{B}}Task 1{{/B}}{{B}}Directions:{{/B}}{{I}} After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 to 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D given in your test paper. You should choose the correct choice. {{/I}} Women's roles have changed throughout the world in recent years, but nowhere so obviously as in America. In many American homes today, it is more and more common to find that the children are left in day-care centers or nursery schools while both parents work. The woman may earn as much or more money than her husband. At home, household duties are shared in varying degrees by all family members. It is not unusual to find father cooking dinner, cleaning the living room or charging the baby. Mother might be outside mowing the lawn or washing the car. Children have responsibilities, too. One of the goals of the Women's Liberation Movement has been to have both men and women share in childcare, housework and financial responsibility. Today many American women will not marry a man who is not willing to participate equally in household responsibilities. The high cost of living has made it necessary for many women to have jobs outside the home, but women often choose to have jobs in order to use their skills and education or to seek a more fulfilling and interesting life. Many American women enjoy the independence that an outside job and the salary give them. Although women have made advances toward equality, sex discrimination (歧视) still exists. Men-employers and even some women-employers sometimes are not for women working outside the home, and in some cases, a woman might be paid less than a man who performs the same job. American women, however, have met challenges since pioneer days, and they continue to work for true equality.

单选题Man has a big brain. He can think, learn and speak. Scientists used to think that man are different from animals because they can think and learn. They know now that animals--dogs, rats and birds--can learn. So scientists are beginning to understand that men are different from animals because they can speak. Animals cannot speak. They make noises when they are afraid, or hungry. or unhappy. Apes are our nearest cousins. They can understand some things mole quickly than human beings, and one or two have learned a few words. But they are still different from us. They cannot join words and make sentences. They cannot think like us because they have no language. They can never think about the past or the future. Language is a wonderful thing. Man has been able to develop civilization because he has language. Every child can. speak his own language vet well when he is four or five--but no animal learns to speak. How do children learn? Scientists do not really know. What happens when we speak? Scientists do not know. They only know that man can speak because he has a big brain.
