There is a popular belief among parents
that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in
has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There
are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it and how to encourage
a child to write without holding hiw back with the complexities of
spelling. If spelling becomes the only focal point of his
teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to "play safe". He
will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid
adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of
dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical
ability. I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a piece of
writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too
many spelling errors and your writing is not neat." It may have been a
sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing. But it was
also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which
contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher
was not wrong to draw attention to the errors. But if his priorities had centred
on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the writing would
have given the pupil more motivation to seek
improvement."

单选题Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You". The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent ( the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic ) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass every year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
