单选题Although the United States has been shaped by continual waves of immigrants, Americans have often viewed immigration as a problem. Established Americans often look down on new immigrants. Despite such tensions, economic needs have always forced Americans to seek immigrants as laborers and settlers, and economic opportunities have appealed to foreigners. The vast majority of immigrants to the United States have come in search of jobs and the chance to create a better life for themselves and their families. In all of American history, less than 10 percent of immigrants have come for political or religious reasons. Economic immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Latin America have come to the United States voluntarily. Others, most African Americans, were involuntarily transported to North America to do forced labor or to be sold as slaves. Regardless of the reasons they come to the United States, new immigrants typically work in labor-intensive, low-paying, and dangerous jobs--occupations that most other Americans avoid. Although immigrants are expected to absorb the beliefs and standards of the dominant society, most immigrant groups try to maintain their own cultural tradition, language, and religious practices. Some groups, such as the Huguenots (French Protestants) who immigrated during the colonial period, assimilated (同化)within one or two generations. Others, such as the German and Irish immigrants of the 19th century, still maintain some aspects of their traditional cultures. Traditionally the United States has been described as a melting pot, a place where the previous identities of each immigrant group are melted down to create an integrated, uniform society.

单选题Many things about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so. But some things we do know. First, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. There is no race of men anywhere on earth so backward that it has no language. And, in historical times, there has never been a race of men without a language. Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped, who are, as we say, uncivilized, but the languages they speak are not primitive. In all known languages we can see complexities that must have been tens of thousands of years in developing. This has not always been well understood; indeed, the direct contrary has often been stated. Popular ideas of the language of the American Indians will illustrate. Many people have supposed that the Indians communicated in a very primitive system of noises. Study has proved this to be nonsense. There are, or were, hundreds of American Indian languages, and all of them turn out to be very complicated and very old. They are certainly different from the languages that most of us are familiar with, but they are no more primitive than. English and Greek. A third thing we know about language is that all languages are perfectly adequate. That is, each one is a perfect means of expressing the culture of the people who speak the language. Finally, we know that language changes. It is natural and normal for language to changes the only languages which do not change are the dead ones. This is easy to understand if we look backward in time. Change goes on in all aspects of language. Grammatical features change as do speech sounds, and changes in vocabulary are sometimes very extensive and may occur very rapidly. Vocabulary is the least stable part of any language.

单选题Directions: The following is a Guide of reading. After reading it, you should give brief answers to the 5 questions(No. 56 through No. 60)that follow. The answers(in no more than 3 words)should be written after the corresponding numbers . If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate and speed of reading: 1. Knowing why you are reading and what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly. 2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea. 3. Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news, and letters from friends, items, or bits of news from local, or hometown paper telling what is happening to friends and neighbors. 4. In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow as you go along. You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

单选题About 150 years ago the children of a poor farmer who lived in South Africa found a pretty pebble (鹅卵石) on the bank of a river. The pebble shone brightly in spots. The children took the pebble home and showed it to their mother. Then they tossed (扔) it aside. The next day a neighbour saw it and offered to buy it. The children and the mother told him that he could have it for nothing. Who ever heard of selling a pebble? The pebble turned out to be a large diamond. No one had known that there are diamonds in South Africa. Today a large part of all the diamonds in the world come from a region not far from the place where the children found their bright pebble. Diamonds are crystals of carbon. Carbon is a very common material. Coal, for example, is made up mostly of carbon. But the carbon of coal is not in crystal form. Clear crystals of carbon are very rare. The word "diamond" comes from a Greek word meaning "the unconquerable". The diamond got its name because of its hardness. No other material is so bard. It is used in tools for cutting and drilling into very hard substances. Some saws, for example, have tiny diamonds set in the teeth.
