单选题Job letters and resumes must attract the attention of busy readers, who may spend only 60 seconds deciding whether to consider you further. This article gives you the tools to write a successful letter and resume. "Successful," of course, means a letter and resume that will get you an interview. After that, your interpersonal skills will help you land the job. The letter and resume only aim to get you to the next step—the personal interview.
Most job letters and resumes still get sent through the mail. However, a growing number of applicants (申请人) use the Internet to apply for jobs.
For example, on-line services can place resumes into a bank used by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of companies. The resumes will be scanned with the use of software, which searches for key words that reflect abilities needed for specific jobs and then sends selected resumes to companies.
Whether you use on-line techniques like e-mail and resume services or stick with the traditional approach (方式), the same basic writing principles you apply. Your letter, no longer than one page, should be specific about the job you seek and your main selling points. The resume—one page or two at most—should simply, specifically, and neatly highlight (强调) your background.

From 1946 until 1954, the Vietnamese
had struggled for their independence from France during the First Indochina War.
At the end of this war, the country was temporarily divided into North and South
Vietnam. North Vietnam came under the control of the Vietnamese Communists who
had opposed France and who aimed for a unified Vietnam under Communist rule. The
South was controlled by Vietnamese who had collaborated with the
French. The United States became involved in Vietnam because it
believed that if all of the country fell under a Communist government, Communism
would spread throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. This belief was known as the
"domino (多米诺骨牌)theory." The U.S. government, therefore, supported the South
Vietnamese government. This government's policies led to rebellion in the
South. In 1965 the United States sent in troops to prevent the
South Vietnamese government from collapsing. Finally, however, the United States
failed to achieve its goal. and in 1975 Vietnam was reunified under Communist
control: in 1976 it officially became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. During
the conflict, approximately 3 to 4 million Vietnamese on both sides were.
killed. More than 58.000 Americans lost their
lives.

For most Americans, the word "poverty"
suggests destitution: an inability to provide a family with nutritious food,
clothing, and reasonable shelter. But only a small number of the 35 million
persons classified as "poor" by the Census Bureau fit that
description. While the poor are generally well-nourished, some
poor families do experience hunger, meaning a temporary discomfort due to food
shortages. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13 percent of
poor families and 2.6 percent of poor children experience hunger at some point
during the year. In most cases, their hunger is short-term. Eighty-nine percent
of the poor report their families have "enough" food to eat, while only 2
percent say they "often" do not have enough to eat. The typical
American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a
refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two
color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR or DVD player, and a
stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not
overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient
funds in the past year to meet his family's essential needs. While this
individual's life is not well-off, it is equally far from the popular images of
frightening poverty conveyed by the press.
