单选题{{B}}Task 1{{/B}}{{B}} Directions:{{/B}}{{I}} After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 to 40, For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D given in your test paper. You should choose the correct choice.{{/I}} For years, students were assured that with a college degree in hand they could acquire an excellent job. However, in recent years, several developments have signaled the beginning of a change in the supply-demand relationship in the services of education. Teachers with terminal degrees far outnumber the available teaching positions in many disciplines. The chairman of a science department today may receive three to four hundred applications for a position that once attracted only half a dozen. States are closing down some colleges and requiring others to {{B}}cut back on{{/B}} undergraduate and graduate programs. Higher education is well into a buyer's market. With the realization that higher education has lost its boasted position in the eyes of the public, administrations of colleges and universities must be prepared to enter into competition with all other supplies of products and services. Private institutions in the long run, have no alternative but to satisfy their customers. Today's students are in touch with the reality of the world, and they realize that while a degree may obtain the first job for them, keeping the job and advancing depend upon the education behind the degree.

单选题Since the 1950s, we have destroyed more than a third of our natural world. Our way of life has caused many serious environmental problems. We use huge amounts of natural resources and produce too much rubbish. Pollution is changing the Earth's climate and our planet is getting hotter. The big question is: Will things ever change for the better? There are some scientists who are full of hope that something good will happen. They believe that with the help of science and strict laws today's environmental problems will disappear in the future. Other scientists are pessimistic (悲观的): They believe that environmental problems are getting worse and soon it will be too late to save the environment. Let's see what predictions those pessimistic scientists have made about life on Earth in the year 2100 : ●The Earth's population will probably be 22.2 billion. ●The Earth's temperature will be 1.4 to 5.8 degrees higher than it is today. The ice at the North and the South Poles will melt and the sea level will rise by 9 to 88 cm. Cities at or below sea level will be submerged. ●Half of the Earth's plants and animals will disappear along with tropical rain forests. ●We will use up all the Earth's natural resources. People won't be able to survive on Earth, so they will have to find a new planet to live on.

单选题Diseases have diverse causes, which can be classified into two broad groups: infectious and noninfectious. Infectious diseases can spread from one person to another and are caused by microscopic (极小的) organisms that invade the body. Noninfectious diseases are not communicated from person to person and do not have, or are not known to involve, infectious agents. Some diseases, such as the common cold, are acute, coming on suddenly and lasting for no more than a few weeks. Other diseases, such as arthritis (关节炎), are chronic (长期的), persisting for months or years, or recurring (复发) frequently. Every disease has certain characteristic effects on the body. Some of these effects, called symptoms and signs, include fever, inflammation, pain, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and rashes, and are readily apparent to the patient. These symptoms offer important clues that help physicians and other health care professionals make a diagnosis. Many times, however, the symptoms point to several possible disorders. In those cases, doctors rely on medical tests, such as blood examinations and X rays, to confirm the diagnosis. The course of a disease--that is, the path it follows from onset to end--can vary tremendously, depending largely on the individual and the treatment he or she receives. For example, otherwise healthy people usually recover quickly from a bout of pneumonia (肺炎) if given proper treatment, whereas pneumonia often proves fatal to people with a weakened immune system and to those who do not receive prompt, effective treatment. Some diseases run a different course depending on the patient's age. Chicken pox (水痘), for instance, is usually mild in childhood but severe in adults. In the United States, only about 5 percent of chicken pox cases occur in people over the age of 20, but these cases account for 50 percent of all deaths from the disease.
