单选题{{B}}Passage 3{{/B}} Since sick building syndrome (综合病症) (SBS) shares symptoms with many prevalent maladies (疾病), from the common cold to allergies and asthma, it can be easily overlooked. The condition is typically recognized only after a group of people occupying the same building come down with the classic symptoms, especially if those symptoms wane during the evening and on weekends. Given a poorly ventilated (使通风), airtight (不漏气的,密封的)building, SBS is believed to be caused by one of two general categories of pollution. The first, typical of flew or newly renovated buildings, is chemical pollution. That "new smell" you get when first moving into a new house is actually the odor of chemical vapors being given off by paint, glue (胶), carpeting and other construction materials. Formaldehyde (甲醛), which is considered a probable human carcinogen (致癌物), is one of the many volatile organic compounds (VOCs)(挥发性有机化合物)commonly released in the vapors; it can be extremely irritating to the mucous membranes (粘膜). The classic case of Chemical SBS occurred, ironically, at EPA headquarters in Washington, D. C. , where large areas of new carpeting were installed during renovations; 60 people became sick and 10 were hospitalized. One cure is to crack up the heat and cook VOCs opt before people move in. A more persistent form of SBS is caused by biological contaminants, including bacteria and now, researchers have learned, fungi. Both require moisture, and their breeding grounds are typically stagnant water, either in a building's ventilation system or trapped in ceiling tiles or carpeting after a leak.

单选题{{B}}Task 1{{/B}}{{B}}Directions: {{/B}}{{I}}After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.{{/I}} What is taboo food? Taboo food is that people avoid for health, cultural or religious reasons. Certain religions forbid the eating of certain types of meat. For example, Muslims and Jews cannot eat pork. Eating shellfish and bird of prey would also go against the religious laws of the Jews. In India, the cow is holy, thus it is not eaten. Some food taboos are not based on religion but on traditions and customs of the society, and sometimes also on the appearance of the food. Neither dogs nor insects are eaten in Norway, Germany, the U. S. and most other western countries, but dogs are considered food in China, and insects are eaten in many countries on the planet. Dogs are a food taboo in the western world because people consider these animals their pets, their friends. Insects are not eaten because the general opinion is that these are dirty animals one doesn't want to digest. The food taboo of one's culture is learnt through childhood. The taboos based on religion are not easy to change. But new types of foods are introduced on the market. They are often viewed as against traditions and therefore avoided. But later some taboos begin to change when the people have grown used to eating some kind of food and maybe also found new uses for it in their regular dishes,
