单选题Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45. Wireless phones are available on today's consumer market. Like most people, you're probably interested in a little handheld number. They're small and light. Transmitting(发送) 0.2 to 0.6 watt of power, these wireless phones come in a variety of models, digital cellular and digital PCS ( personal communications service) models, as well many cool shapes and colors. How do you choose a mobile when two or three models look equally good? Think about these characteristics: A big, bright display--The more you use your phone, the more you'll appreciate an ease-to-read display. Light weight--Most wireless phones these days are tiny, so why take a 10-ounce model when a 6-ounce one works just as well? Accessories(配件)--If you want a certain type of hands-free car kit(成套用具) or other accessory, make sure it's available for your specific phone; Battery life--Look for a phone that allows you to talk for a long time; External volume control--Take a phone with an external volume control. You'll appreciate it the first time you use it in a noisy place; Easy ringer volume control--Buy a phone that rings loudly enough for a moderately noisy environment, but is easy to tone down for, say, a funeral. Even better, get a phone with a vibrating alert.

单选题 Antarctica, the coldest place on the Earth, is too cold for most creatures. However, things are different for penguins. Several types of penguins make their home in Antarctica. They walk with short steps, all over the icy continent. However, they don't have "Happy Feet." Some of Antarctica's penguins are endangered, or at risk of dying out. The animals seek for food near the Antarctica's coasts. They use the floating sea ice as a place to rest while they search. In recent years, global warming, the slow rise of Earth's temperature, has been causing the ice to melt. People add to global warming when they drive cars or using electricity. That burns fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuel gives off gas that warms the Earth. The harmful gas stays in the atmosphere above Antarctica. The scientists found that the west side of the continent is especially affected by global warming. "Global warming is reducing the amount of food for penguins so that they can't find enough food to eat." Scientist Shaye Wolf said. Experts are hopeful at conditions in Antarctica can be improved. They say people can reduce global warming by using ears and electricity less often. Even kids can help. Wolf suggests, "talk to your friends and family about global warming, how it is harming penguins, and how important it is to stop warming today."

单选题Sandstorms hit northwestern China's Gansu Province and North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区) on the first day of the new century. According to Sun Landong, a meteorologist with the Lanzhou meteorology Observatory, visibility (能见度) was less than 100 meters in Minqin, a Gansu county near Inner Mongolia, because of sand. When visibility drops to less than 1 kilometer, it is called a sandstorm. The sandstorm in Minqin blew up dust in neighboring towns, such as Baiyu, Wuwei, Jichang and Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province. Dust-laden winds also swept into Beijing. Brought by northwest lies blowing at more than 20 meters per second, dust first reached the capital's the temperature down to as low as 8 below zero and many flights put off their planned time from the city's airport. It is quite rare for sandstorms, which are frequent between March and June, to happen in winter, when the earth is frozen. The sandstorms in Gansu and Inner Mongolia do not necessarily mean there will be more of them in the spring than last year, when they were serious, but Beijing is taking it very serious. It is reported that Beijing will spend 6 billion Yuan (US $ 725 million)in preventing sandstorms in the capital and has already set up a special team to make sure what causes them.
