Long long ago, there were two men who
had a very fierce quarrel. They argued for a long time, but still they couldn't
settle the problem. The incident occurred one morning outside Albert
Schweitzer's hospital in the African jungle. A patient who lived in the hospital
had gone fishing in another man's boat without permission. He succeeded in
getting a tot of fish. Finding out what the patient had done, the owner of the
boat thought that he should be given all the fish that were caught. Dr.
Schweitzer said to the boat owner: "You are right because the
other man ought to have asked permission to use your boat. But you are wrong
because you are careless and lazy. Though you have the boat, you don't make good
use of it. You merely twisted the chain of your canoe round a palm tree instead
of fastening. it with a padlock. Of laziness you are guilty because you were
asleep in your hut on this moonlit night instead of making use of the good
opportunity for fishing." He turned to the patient: "But you
were in the wrong when you took the boat without asking the owner's permission.
You were in the right because you were not so lazy as he was and you did not
want to let the moonlit night go by without making some use of it."
Dr. Schweitzer divided the catch among the fisherman, the boat owner, and
the hospital.

单选题 The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture
(针灸) to perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to
sleep. This involves placing flexible needles into certain parts of the body.
The needles are available in a number of stores in China and anyone may buy
them. To learn bow to use the needles takes about one month of
training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the
acupuncture knows how to put in the needles so the needles themselves are not
painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels
no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. A particular
operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body.
But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles. Today,
Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to
develop a convincing theory to explain how the needles work in preventing pain,
or why a needle in the wrist, for example, would prevent the pain in the area of
the mouth. A patient who needs an operation is given a choice
between having acupuncture and having one of the chemicals used for putting him
to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose
acupuncture because there is no sickness after the Operation, whereas the
chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day.

单选题 In Washington D. C. , 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a
very special address. It is the address of the White House, the home of the
president of the United States. Originally the White House was
gray and was called the presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At
this time, the city of Washington itself was being built It was to be the
nation's new capital city. George Washington, the first president, and Pierre
Charles L' Enfant, a French engineer, chose the place for the new city. L'
Enfant then planned the city. The president's home was an important part of the
plan. A contest was held to pick a design for the president's
home. An architect named James Hogan won. He designed a large three-story house
of gray stone. President Washington never lived in the
Presidential Palace. The first president to live there was John Adams, the
second president of the United States, and his wife Mrs. Adams did not really
like her new house. In her letters, she often complained about the cold. Fifty
fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm! In 1812 the
United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British invaded Washington.
They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace.
After the war James Hoban, the original architect, partially rebuilt the
president's home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted
white. Before long it became known as the White House. The
White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States.
Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms that are
open to the public.
