To the professional linguist, there is
no superiority of any language. Therefore, it is well-accepted in the field of
linguistics that there exist no higher or lower grades among
languages. People once thought of tile languages of backward
groups as undeveloped forms of speech, consisting largely of rough and simple
sounds. It is possible that language in general began as a series of simple
sounds. But it is a fact established by the study of "backward" languages that
no spoken tongue answers that description. Most languages of "backward" groups
are extremely complex pieces of tool for the transfer of ideas. They "fall
behind" the western languages not in their sound pattern or grammatical
structures but only in their vocabularies. The sound pattern or grammatical
structures usually are fully adequate for all language needs. The vocabulary
reflects the objects and activities known to their speakers.
There are two things to be noted. Firstly, all languages seem to possess
ways for vocabulary expansion. Vocabulary expands either by putting together its
own words or by borrowing words from other languages. Secondly, the "backward"
languages are different from ours. The objects and activities which require
distinction are often surprisingly numerous and
complicated.

单选题When you show a customer a Multi-mower — a lawn mower (割草机) that cuts, trims (修剪) and "rakes" a lawn (靶草) in one operation — you have a quick sale, a satisfied customer, and a $46.65 profit. Your customers will like the Multi-mower because it gives them more time to spend in enjoyable summer recreation (娱乐). It cuts right up to walls, fences, and flower beds, eliminating hand trimming. Its easily adjustable and self-sharpening cutters slice down the toughest kinds of grass and weeds for a trim, neat lawn in half the usual time. Its light weight — only 58 pounds — means easy handling. The quiet operation of the interlocking cutters has won the approval of 80,000 Multi-mower users. They like it, too, because it is permanently lubricated (润滑) and self-sharpening, with a minimum of care it's ready for use. So normally you just put in the gas and it's ready to go. No doubt many of your customers have been reading about the Multi-mower in the full-page, four-color monthly ads that started running in Homeowners and Vacation magazines in March and will continue through July. Note the testimonials and conditions of our guarantee on the next page — and the favorable guarantee and servicing arrangements. In these days that the $139.95 retail cost will be popular with your customers. Our price to you is only $93.30 — a $46.65 profit.

单选题Advertising can be thought of "as the means of making something known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertising aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method of advertizing. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in sales than what would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.
