When you open your electronic mail, you may find information about how to buy medicine, cheap airline tickets, books, computer products, and so on. There may also be offers for investment deals, bank loans and special holidays. However, to many computer users, this use of electronic
spam
to sell products has become a major problem as it makes computer communication more difficult.
Many companies that want to send a great deal of advertising at the same time might use the services of a "spammer". A spammer is a person or company that uses computers to send out millions of copies of the same sales information. Spammers get people's e-mail addresses from websites, news groups and "chat rooms" where people send messages to each other.
Most spam is sent by companies that are trying to get you to buy their products. Some of these are honest companies that may offer good products or services for fair prices. These companies can offer their products for a cheaper price than you might find in a store. However, much of the spam on the Internet is sent by criminals(罪犯) who are trying to sell products that do not exist or offer services they will not provide at all. What they are only interested in is stealing your money. When you answer their spam you find you are expected to send them money and receive a gift. If you just follow what they ask you to do without any consideration, it is likely that you will be cheated and lose some money.

It is only recent years that man found that the protection of our environment is no small matter to our lives.
Twenty years ago, kids in school had never even heard of the internet. Now, I'll bet you can't find a single person in your school who hasn't at least heard of it. In fact, many of us use it on a regular basis and even have access to it from our homes! The "net" in internet really stands for network. A network is two or more computers connected together so that information can be shared, or sent from one computer to another. The internet is a vast resource for all types of information. You may enjoy using it to do research for a school project, downloading your favorite songs or communicating with friends and family. Information is accessed through web pages that companies, organizations and individuals create and post. It's kind of like a giant bulletin(告示)board that the whole world uses! But since anyone can put anything on the internet, you also have to be careful and use your best judgment and a little common sense. Just because you read something on a piece of paper someone sticks on a bulletin board doesn't mean it's good information, or even correct, for that matter. So you have to be sure that whoever posted the information knows what they're talking about, especially if you're doing research! But What if you're just e-mailing people? You still have to be very careful. If you've never met the person that you're communicating with online, you could be on dangerous ground! You should never give out any personal information to someone you don't know, not even your name! And just like you can't believe the information on every website out there, you can't rely on what strangers you "meet" on the internet tell you either. Just like you could make up things about yourself to tell someone, someone else could do the same to you! Questions:

India is the world's biggest gold consumer, but the country's passion for the yellow metal is waning(逐渐减弱). Record high prices and the recent economic recession have taken away some of the glitter of gold. The country's passion for gold is rooted in culture and custom. Gold ornaments(装饰品) are a traditional wedding present to brides and a gift of the precious metal during their religious festivals means good fortune. It is a traditional gift on other important occasions, such as the birth of a child. But shop owners say now they only see "essential customers"—those who have to buy for the marriage of a son or a daughter. Even these buyers are scaling back on purchases. Some are passing on traditional hereditary(遗传的) treasures, instead of buying new gold. Others are cutting back on the quantity of gold they buy and opting for ornaments of lesser weight. Gold is getting hit not just by the surging prices. In the big cities, the attraction of the precious metal is waning, as trends change. The new status symbol of the country's wealthy class is no longer jewelry, but expensive mobile phones, iPods or designer labels. However, in a country where the love of gold dates back centuries, jewelry shop owners say they will wait patiently for sales to pick up. As has happened many times in the past, they are hoping that customers will flock back, once they get accustomed to the higher prices.

I hate driving. I hate the traffic, the confusing design of highways in my city and the long periods of sitting with nothing tc do but listen to the radio. Besides, I am a nervous, slow driver, fearful of other cars and distracted drivers. But I live in a spacious Southwestern city with limited public transportation and intense heat that makes long-distance walking or biking tough for much of the year. So driving is a fact of life for me. My fears, though, have only been further confirmed by a sad series in The New York Times called "Driven to Distraction" about the dangers of using cellphones and of texting while driving. One article cited a new study, by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which found that when truck drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting. Another article cited research that drivers using phones are four times as likely to cause a crash as other drivers—and that driving while talking on a cell is akin(类似的)to being legally drunk. Hands-free devices, meanwhile, don't eliminate these risks, according to studies. In fact, they may worsen them by giving drivers a false sense of security. Because I'm such a weak driver, I try not to talk or answer my phone on the road unless it's urgent or traffic is at a standstill(停止). But for many people, especially those with long commutes and important business to take care of, talking or texting while driving is common, and perhaps necessary. I am amazed by how man)interviews I've conducted for articles with subjects talking to me while driving: I can sometimes hear the sound of horns and the music of NPR(美国国家公共广播电台)turned down in the background.
