Dear Sir, I will graduate from Shanghai University of International Business and Economics this year. As a student majoring in Business English, I hope to work for a foreign company after graduation. Awarded a succession of scholarships, I have proved myself to be an excellent student in the past four academic years. My English is particularly good and Japanese happens to be my second foreign language, which will live up to the requirements set by a wholly foreign-owned enterprise like yours. I apply for the position of assistant to your marketing project manager. You will find me a good team player, self-motivated and eager to learn. I believe I can be of value to your company. Enclosed please find my resume. I should be very glad if you would arrange an interview with me. Yours faithfully, Lin Na

Today our knowledge of food and what it does for our bodies is far more advanced than that of the old times. Now we know about vitamins and how each kind of vitamin helps in the growth of a particular part of our body. There are on the market all kinds of vitamins which one can take to make up for one's lack of certain important things that are needed for good health. Of course, if we eat well and properly, the food we eat will take care of our body and so there is no need to take any kinds of vitamins unless our doctor tells us that our bodies are short of something that can be supplied by them. Generally speaking, everything we eat does some good to our body, but if we eat too much of one kind of food and pay too little attention to others, we may have too much of one kind and not enough of others. Then we may be in trouble. We are often told that we must eat some meat at each meal in order to get the necessary proteins. That is only partly true, for proteins are not found only in meat. We can also get them from some vegetables. The best advice about what to eat is that we should eat all kinds of food but never too much for any. "Avoid the rush-hour" must be the slogan of large cities all over the world. Wherever you look, it's people, people, people. The streets are so crowded that there is hardly room to move: when a bus arrives, it's so full that it can't take any more passengers. The extraordinary thing is not that people put up with these conditions, but that they actually choose them in preference to anything else. Large modern cities are too big to control. They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. What is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. Even the distinction between day and night is lost. The funny thing about it all is that you pay dearly for the "privilege" of living in a city. The demand for accommodation is so great that high rents must be paid for tiny flats which even country hens would scorn(不屑于接受) to live in. Accommodation apart, the cost of living is very high. Just about everything you buy is likely to be more expensive than it would be in the country. In addition to all these, city inhabitants live under constant threats. The crime rate in most cities is very high. If you think about it, they're not really fit to live in at all. Can anyone really doubt that the country is what man was born for and where he truly belongs?

"But I just paid $1.69 for this bottle of wine last week. How come the price is now $2.25? What's going on?" There are at least three things going on that have caused the price of wine to rise. All have to do with the supply and demand factors of economics. The first factor is that people are drinking more wine than ever before. This demand for more wine has increased overall (总体) wine sales in America at the rate of 15 percent a year. The second factor is that the supply of wine has stayed relatively the same, which means that the same number of bottles is produced each year. Wine producers are trying to open up new land to grow more grapes (葡萄). But in at least three wine-producing areas of the world—France, Germany, and California—new vineyards (葡萄园) will not be available in the near future. Wines are produced in other countries, such as Italy, Spain and Australia, but none of these countries will be able to fill the demand for good wines. The third factor is that costs of wine productions are increasing. The men who make wine are asking for more money, and the machinery needed to press the grapes is becoming more expensive. When the demand for something is greater than the supply, prices go up. When production costs, meaning the prices of labor and machinery, rise, the producer adds this increase to the price of the wine.

The advantages of some form of international language in the modern world are obvious. Thanks to modern methods of transport, we can travel everywhere more easily and more quickly than ever before, but the language problem still remains. Without a common language, misunderstandings arise and there can be no real communication between people of different nationalities. There are two possible solutions to this problem: either we choose one of the existing major languages of the world, or we make up an artificial one. But neither solution is simple because no existing major language will be acceptable to everyone and because an artificial language, such as Esperanto(世界语), has no literature and would be thought dull by many learners. It is often said that English is quickly becoming a world language. It is certainly the most widely used language in the world, and second only to Chinese in its number of native speakers, but there are certain dangers in choosing English as an international language. First of all, owing to political reasons and national pride, English is not acceptable to everyone as a world language. Many dislike its influence: they see it as a form of interference, perhaps even domination. English words enter their languages and this too causes offence. Although English is being taught in more and more schools abroad, the process is not always popular. Not every nation is prepared to accept the dominant position of a foreign language in their educational system. Another danger is that differences in standard English arise from its use throughout the world. It could break up, with languages developing from dialects(方言)of English. Already Indian teachers and Nigerian students have been unable to understand each other's English. Questions:

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not a bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "flight or fight" and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life and death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Since we can't remove stress from our life(it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

Dear Sirs, I'm writing to confirm the loss of my credit card. I telephoned your office earlier today. The details of my card are as follows. It is an Apex Silver card in the name of Paul Anderson. The credit card number is 5431 7602 2578 4849. I have had an Apex card since 1994. This card is valid (有效的)from August 2003 to August 2005. I lost the card yesterday at about 8: 30 in the evening. The only case I used the card yesterday was to buy three dictionaries at the Dillons Bookstore in Oxford Street. By accident, I left the card at the shop . When I realized what I had done, I telephoned the shop, but the shop assistants there could not find the card. Could you please cancel my card immediately and make the necessary arrangements to issue a replacement card to me ? I can be contacted at the telephone number of 347-4587-9856. Thank you for your assistance. Yours faithfully, Paul Anderson
